Is it worth it and is it possible to store a bicycle on the balcony in winter: advantages and consequences

In recent years, bicycles can be seen more and more often on the streets of our cities, so for many people the problem of storing their equipment in the winter is pressing. Some cycling enthusiasts prefer to store their bike on the balcony in winter, forgetting about the simplest rules of preservation and long stay in one place.

This is just a guard.

It’s worth noting right away that a two-wheeled friend should not just survive the winter among the rest of the trash and many other things.

You need to store your bike correctly in winter, especially on a balcony or loggia.

First of all, the following requirements must be met:

  • Before storing equipment for the winter, it must be properly prepared;
  • Understand and choose the most favorable storage method, of which there are several.

In addition, you can purchase a special case in the store, which is designed for storing bicycles and other similar equipment. By placing your bike in a case, you can protect it from direct sunlight, high humidity, and severe frosts. If it is not possible to purchase a specialized case, then you should use the basic rules and recommendations for storing bicycle equipment in the winter in a loggia or balcony.

The bag has a cover - it is convenient to transport and can be stored hanging.

An excellent place for storage is an insulated and glazed balcony, ideally if it is attached to the room.

In this case, the owner is only required to periodically pump up the wheels and make sure that sunlight does not fall on the equipment. In some cases, the smell of oil can interfere with a comfortable rest, so in such situations, storing a bicycle on a heated balcony can be difficult.

How to make your bike more compact during storage

If you remove the wheels and handlebars from the bike, it will take up much less space. Those who for some reason do not want to completely disassemble the bike can limit themselves to removing a few elements:

  • fender and front wheel;
  • saddle and seatpost.

After removing these elements, the bicycle handlebar is turned at a right angle, and then the pedals are taken out and installed in the connecting rods so that they “look” inward.

Preservation of a balcony for the winter on the balcony

As a result of the described manipulations, the bicycle turns into a structure that does not take up free space, which can be either hung or simply kept in a special case. Free space can be saved by using clothes hangers made of wood or metal, which are attached to the walls using ordinary self-tapping screws. These cheap and compact designs are extremely easy to attach and help protect the bike from excess moisture settling on the floor. Wooden hangers are considered more practical because they do not cause rust and do not scratch the bicycle frame.

And the optimal place for winter preservation of a two-wheeled friend is any interior room: after all, if the structure is disassembled and carefully placed in a case, it can easily fit under a bed or on a closet. You can even hang the already described design of hangers in the hallway or in the room: for interiors designed in the loft or industrial style, a bicycle hanging on the wall is perfect.

Of course, no one would think of installing glazing solely to store their favorite vehicle on the loggia. The steps required for winter storage of a bicycle will not require large financial expenditures, so it is best to carry them out in full so that it is not damaged by weather conditions and moisture. When disassembling a bicycle, it is best to leave the wheels in the apartment, and they should be lubricated with glycerin even in this case, so that the tires do not dry out. It is also useful to find out whether it is possible to install a refrigerator on the balcony.

Sun protection

If the bicycle storage space is located outside a heated room, for example, on a cold balcony, then it must be protected from direct exposure to sunlight.

Protecting your bike from sunlight during storage

For these purposes it is quite suitable:

  1. dark corner on the balcony;
  2. waterproof fabric;
  3. thick paper.

In a word, storing a bicycle is carried out in the same way as storing potatoes on a balcony - away from sunlight and moisture. How to store a bicycle in winter on the balcony in winter? Is it possible to smoke on it? True, for a bicycle the closed method is expressed in the use of more plastic materials, and for storing vegetables a sealed wooden box is used.

How to store a bicycle in an apartment

My home is my castle. Where, no matter how at home, you can create the best conditions for the high-quality maintenance of your transport. Often amateurs have nowhere to put their bike, and therefore have to get creative and find unexpected ways to store it. In the summer, it is best to find a place in the hallway near the front door so as not to carry dirt into the house. This place is not suitable for winter storage, especially if there are two or three bicycles in the apartment.

Storing a bike in the room

In the room you can use wardrobes for outerwear, mezzanines, wardrobes, retractable podiums. You can fit two bicycles in the closet without even disassembling them. If the height of the room allows, you can attach your vehicle to the ceiling - in this case, three copies will fit. For greater safety, the suspended ceiling structure should be built in the corner of the room. The simplest solution is to place the “iron horse” behind the bed or sofa, where it will not interfere. If there is space between the wall and the closet, feel free to take this space. If the room is spacious, then use the vehicle as an interior or decorative item, for example, turn it into a flower stand by placing indoor plants in baskets on the steering wheel and trunk.

Do not place your vehicle near heating devices, as high temperatures and dry air will damage the wheels and fork seals.

Special mounts

There are many different devices for storing your iron friend on the wall or ceiling. These are mainly bicycle hooks, all kinds of racks and shelves. You can find a place for such storage in almost any room, in the hallway, bedroom, closet and even in the toilet. There are quite a few designs of bike hooks: some are screwed in like screws, while others are attached to a common base. Hooks can be designed for vertical or horizontal fastening.

Mounts in the form of special racks are much less commonly used in apartments, as they take up a lot of space. But the plus is that you can fit several bikes on the racks. Racks are made of metal pipes or wood and can combine elements of a hanger and a storage system. A beautiful and simple way of mounting is a shelf. Many options for different shelves are sold in specialized stores, and with a certain skill, it is not difficult to make a shelf with your own hands. On such a shelf you can put books, flowers, candles, any decorative elements, if the mounting system is equipped in the hallway - it is convenient to put bags, gloves or keys on the shelf.

Unassembled storage

If there is a shortage of space, it is easier to store vehicles in a disassembled state. This work is painstaking and difficult, but the results will please you: the disassembled bicycle will fit on almost any shelf in the closet. It is also very convenient to store it under the sofa or bed - there it certainly won’t bother anyone.

When disassembling your vehicle, adhere to the following order:

  • First of all, remove the steering wheel, after loosening the fasteners;
  • remove the pedals and seat;
  • To properly remove the wheels, loosen the nuts and remove the front wheel, then the rear.

Is it possible to store a bicycle in the entrance?

If in the summer your transport is always at hand and you use it often, it is much more convenient for you to leave it on the landing than to carry dirt home and clutter up your hallway. But bicycle “parking” in the entrance in winter can be quite a problem. First of all, relations with neighbors may deteriorate, since not everyone will be able to appreciate the beauty of such a neighborhood. Vehicles left at the entrance can be stolen, and fire safety requirements are categorically against such storage, because your vehicle will become an obstacle on the evacuation route.

The bicycle will also interfere with cleaning the room. But if you can overcome all these obstacles, get the consent of your neighbors, permission from the fire department, and your entrance is carefully guarded, then choose unused places on the wall or ceiling for storage, using reliable fastenings. Typically, such entrances are well heated, and the bicycle will not be afraid of sub-zero temperatures.

How to store a bicycle in an apartment: ideas for compact placement

We have collected the most convenient ways to store a bicycle in an apartment. The same methods can be used to organize storage on a glazed balcony, garage, pantry, dressing room and other places.

On the floor

In a large apartment, you can simply store your bike on the floor in the hallway or in the hallway. For floor storage, use

  • connecting rod stand
  • stand for rear stays
  • rear hub stand
  • parking rack or bike rack

The issue of dirt can be solved by using a cover, wheel stands, or wiping the bike after riding.

Storing a bike on the wall

A big plus of storing a bike on the wall is saving space. You can mount your bike on the wall horizontally or vertically. In the vertical version, the bicycle can be parallel or perpendicular to the wall. When storing perpendicularly, to save space, place bicycles as in the photo.

Horizontal storage is suitable for prominent places, since in this position the bicycle looks more aesthetically pleasing and becomes an important part of the interior. This technique is often used by designers to create a creative environment and save space in small apartments.

For horizontal storage on the wall, various fastenings are suitable: stands for the top tube, repair hangers, bicycle shelves, bicycle hooks, holders or brackets.

It is better to store the bicycle vertically against the wall in non-residential areas of the apartment: on the balcony, loggia, in the pantry or in the hallway, if space allows. To place the bicycle vertically parallel to the wall, hang it by the wheel on hooks or attach it to the wall using special fasteners. To hang a bicycle vertically perpendicular to the wall, you will need vertical wheel holders. Use approved mounting mechanisms with the specified maximum weight.

Mounting a bicycle to the ceiling

The bicycle can be placed in different ways: parallel or perpendicular to the ceiling, on brackets with a lift, or simply hung on hooks.

The simplest and most clumsy solution is to hang the bicycle vertically by one or both wheels, attaching hooks to the ceiling for hanging. The downside of this option is that you will have to constantly lift the heavy bike above you. It is more convenient to use a lifting mechanism with cables, which is attached to the ceiling. The bicycle on the floor clings to the hooks and is lifted to the ceiling by pulling the cable, then fixed at the desired height.

On a bike rack

The rack can store 2-4 bicycles at once. There are different racks: some are attached to the wall, others resemble a floor hanger and can be placed in any convenient place. Racks can be built into a closet or wardrobe.

On the bike station

This storage method is suitable for those who train at home on a bicycle station. With this method you get a bicycle, a bicycle stand and an exercise bike.

Disassembled

For long-term storage in the off-season, the bike can be partially disassembled. Even a person who is far from a bicycle mechanic can do this.

  • Wash your bike and remove all accessories
  • Remove the pedals, saddle, handlebars and front wheel
  • If necessary, you can remove the rear wheel

A disassembled bicycle can be folded into a special case, cover, or bag. Or just wrap it with packaging film. In this form, it can be easily stored in a sofa, under a bed or in a closet.

There are a lot of ways to store bicycles, but not all are covered in this article. Look for solutions, come up with your own ways and don’t let your living conditions interfere with your hobby.

How to “preserve” a bicycle for the winter?

Most bicycle owners actively use them only in the summer. Few people dare to ride a bike in winter. It’s cold, slippery, it gets dark early – this kind of skating doesn’t bring any pleasure. Therefore, most bicycles spend the winter like bears - hibernating. In late autumn, when you no longer feel like riding, questions arise: Where should you store your bike in winter and how to prepare it for winter storage?

Where to store your bike in winter?

When exposed to direct sunlight or significant temperature changes, rubber and plastic parts lose their elasticity and become brittle. The varnish that covers the frame becomes dull and destroyed.

And for metal parts, precipitation - rain, snow - is undesirable. The first thing that suffers from corrosion is the chain. Bearing units are also susceptible to corrosion, but they are usually protected by seals and boots.

Therefore, the ideal option for storing a bicycle in winter would be a dry room without sudden temperature changes. For example, you can store a bicycle in an apartment (Of course, if your beloved mother-in-law does not object, underline what is necessary). However, it is not recommended to store the bicycle near heating devices, otherwise it will experience the same temperature changes.

Another storage option is on the balcony. If the balcony is glazed, then it is enough to protect the bicycle from direct sunlight by covering it with some kind of paper, rag, film. But it is not advisable to store a bicycle on an open balcony - it cannot really be protected from rain and snow.

You can store your bike in an unheated room (garage, shed). My entire herd of bicycles has been wintering in the garage for the fifth year in a row (one bike continues to be used in the winter, but is still stored in the garage). The garage is not heated, but snow and rain do not penetrate there either. The storage result is quite satisfactory.

How to prepare a bike for winter storage?

The first thing you need to do is wash and lubricate your bike well. The chain must be washed and lubricated especially carefully - this will protect it from corrosion. The lubrication of bushing bearings can also be timed to coincide with the end of the season, during conservation.

After this, wipe all metal parts with an oiled cloth. The chain must be moved to the smallest sprockets both front and rear. In this case, the tension on the gearshift cables will be minimal.

If the bike will be standing on the floor, then you need to inflate the tires to operating pressure so that they do not become deformed. And in winter you should periodically check the tire pressure. If you prefer to store your bike by hanging it on a hook driven into the wall, then you can reduce the pressure in the tires - they will still not be deformed.

How to reduce the size of a bicycle when storing?

If you don't have enough space to store your bike, you can remove the front wheel, unscrew the pedals from the cranks and screw them into the cranks on the reverse side, and also turn the handlebars 90°.

True fans of a two-wheeled bike do not think about how to store a bike in winter. They ride every year and in any weather. However, with the colder weather and the arrival of autumn frosts, most vehicle owners feel uncomfortable. Rain, winds and icy conditions force us to pause cycling and start preparing our bike for the winter. In this case, storage conditions must comply with certain rules, with the help of which the bicycle parts will not wear out until the next season.

How to prepare your bike for winter

First of all, you need to understand that simply finding a place to store your bike is only part of the task. But the most important thing is to carry out the preparatory work. Now everything is in order.

WashingThis is a must. Take a brush and brush off bits of dirt from all the switches, brake levers and wheel hubs. Areas stained with grease are wiped with a soft cloth. To clean the front and rear sprockets and chain tensioner, we use kerosene, white spirit, ocetone or other good quality solvents. To significantly save money, cleaning products should be applied with a spray bottle rather than poured onto a rag.
Technical inspectionIf some breakdowns have been identified, then it is worth eliminating them before the moment of conservation, so that when spring comes your bike is in working order. If there is a need to replace worn parts with new ones, then this must also be done.
LubricationIt is best to change the lubricant in the pedals, carriage, wheel bushings, and steering column. This must be done annually, and preparation for wintering is the most opportune moment. You also need to take care to lubricate the cables, chain, derailleurs and brakes. If there is no heating in the place where the bicycle is supposed to be stored, and the temperature is below freezing, then all chrome surfaces should be coated with a small layer of silicone grease. This will make it possible to prevent corrosion of metal parts, as well as premature cracking of the paint on the frame. Rubber parts will remain intact and unharmed.
Voltage reductionUsing switches, the chain is thrown into a prohibited position so that its location is at the back and front of the smallest sprockets. To reduce the tension of the springs, you need to disconnect the cantilever, vibrating, and pincer brake levers.
Reduced pressureThis applies to cameras. The pressure in them must be reduced to 1 - 1.5 atm. There is no need to completely deflate the wheels, even if you have chosen a place for it on the hanger. If the vehicle is supposed to be placed on its wheels, then it is worth visiting regularly and, if necessary, pumping them up. Expensive tires are best lubricated outside and inside with glycerin. This will make it possible to avoid cracking at sub-zero temperatures.
Disabling power suppliesIf your bicycle is equipped with electrical equipment, it must be removed for the winter. This could be a flashlight, navigator, cycling computer and more. If the lighting fixtures cannot be removed, then it is necessary to remove the batteries from them, since they will still discharge and electrolyte may leak from them.
Loosening clampsIt is advisable to loosen the clamps that secure the seatpost and stem a little.

If you complete all of the above steps, you can leave your bike for the winter even in unheated rooms.

Ideas for winter boots

How to properly store winter shoes in summer? It is best to keep it in a closet or dressing room. But only some city dwellers can afford a large dressing room. In houses with stairs, you can organize a closet to store shoes underneath. There are several more options for organizing storage:

  1. 1The cardboard boxes in which the shoes were sold are suitable for storage. Each pair should be stored in a separate box. It is unacceptable to place winter shoes in closed plastic containers or bags. Constant air circulation must be ensured to prevent damage to boots by mold and mildew. If you don’t have the boxes the shoes were in when you purchased them, you can purchase suitable cardboard boxes at any hardware store. Fabric bags are suitable; they are easy to sew yourself or buy.
  2. 2Expensive and patent leather shoes are best stored on special lasts. If it is not possible to purchase them, you can use newspaper, simply pushing it into your boots so that the shape does not get lost.
  3. 3If the apartment has a dressing room, the boxes can be placed on shelves.
  4. 4You can figure out how to store shoes in a closet or dressing room yourself. Some housewives purchase special organizers with compartments that can hold all their winter boots.
  5. 5For tall leather shoes that are undesirable to put in boxes for long-term storage, you can purchase special hangers or shoes. With their help, you can place shoes in a closet or dressing room on hooks.
  6. 6A small chest of drawers with a door that opens 180° and division into compartments will take up little space even in the hallway, but it will fit a large number of shoes.
  7. 7You can buy shelves and stands, just like in shoe stores. This way the shoes will be stored in the right conditions and will not lose their appearance.
  8. 8If winter shoes will be stored in boxes on the mezzanine, you can sign what is where. Then you won’t have to go through a large number of boxes.
  9. 9You can make an organizer in your closet from a TV box, after dividing it into cells. It is in them that the shoes will be folded. This homemade organizer is convenient because the cells are made according to the size of the stored shoes. If the family is large and everyone has several pairs of winter shoes, you can make such a storage space for everyone.

Basic Rules

Before you put your boots away for summer storage, they need to be properly prepared. This rule applies to all models without exception, even rubber and marsh ones - so unpretentious in appearance. Depending on the type of material and characteristics of the products, the following manipulations must be performed:

  • Any boots must first be thoroughly cleaned of dirt, dust, and reagents. Not only the decorative surface of the products is processed, but also their sole. It is forbidden to use metal graters or hard brushes; they easily damage any surface.
  • It is recommended to treat suede and velor with special wire brushes. And abrasions from such surfaces can be removed by rubbing them with fine-grained sandpaper and then holding them over a stream of steam for a few seconds.
  • High suede boots, so popular today, lose their appeal after just one season of wear. You shouldn’t think that you can fix this in the summer or before the start of the next season; it’s better to do everything right away. You just need to prepare a weak vinegar solution, wipe the products with it and dry thoroughly.

  • Wading boots and items that have been worn for a long time become heavily saturated with sweat, even if this is not obvious at first. Such items of footwear must be disinfected before being put away. To do this, prepare a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate, which we carefully use to treat all the internal surfaces of the boots. 3% hydrogen peroxide also copes well with the smell of sweat.
  • After all the preliminary processing steps have been completed, the products need to be dried. To do this, it is best to use well-ventilated rooms or a balcony with access to fresh air. Attempts to speed up the process using artificial heat sources will not lead to anything good. Swamp boots and rubber boots may become worn out from such exposure.

All that remains is to choose a place where you can store your boots in the summer. And this will depend on the purpose of the shoe, the characteristics of its material and design.

How to determine storage locations on the balcony

To begin with, it is worth noting that the first step is to glaze the balcony.

When performing this operation, you should pay attention to energy-saving double-glazed windows, since they are able to more effectively retain heat in the room. This will create conditions on the balcony under which you can store almost anything

Next, as in the previous case, you should pay attention to the niches that are available on the balcony, since it is there that the organization of built-in cabinets and shelving will be quite natural. Even if the niche is very wide or not very deep, you can still place shelves in it for storing small items

Also, the balcony can be somewhat “taken out” when carrying out glazing work. This will provide space under the window sill for creating shelving there, and the wide window sill itself will be more convenient.

Storing your bike on stylish wooden shelves

A very elegant solution. Without a bike, you can’t say that the main function is to mount a bike. This so-called “fastening shelf” can harmoniously fit into both a small apartment and a spacious hallway. Also suitable for storing a bike on the balcony. You can not only hang a bike, but also store a whole bunch of all sorts of necessities and useful things. This “thing” can easily be classified as a necessary and useful thing for landscaping a balcony or loggia.

Particularly handmade note. You can create something similar yourself, only to suit your specific needs. I’m sitting looking at the photo and thinking, maybe I should actually go and make a similar “shelf-mount” myself. Cool stuff

I repeat that storage is great with the implementation of such design solutions, it fits not only into some separate room or corridor (there are a lot of options), but you can safely do this on a balcony or loggia, why not.

Bicycle and vacuum cleaner: can they be stored on the balcony in winter?

For convenient storage of the vacuum cleaner on the balcony, you can install shelves or, for example, a wardrobe. For storage, you can also equip an analogue of the cellar - a thermal box, which you can make with your own hands and even store vegetables. When storing a bicycle and a vacuum cleaner on the balcony, you must not forget that items stored nearby can create increased humidity. Such items could be drying clothes or vegetables.

Unusual ideas for storing a bicycle in an apartment

The main place for winter storage of bicycles is the apartment. Since most cyclists are forced to keep their personal vehicles in limited space, you can find many original options for storing bicycles on the Internet.

Under the ceiling

Even in the cramped apartment, a bicycle can be stored under the ceiling in winter, in which case it will not interfere with movement at all. You can drive reliable hooks into the ceiling or build a lifting mechanism similar to a winch, which will allow you to easily lift and lower two-wheeled vehicles

When storing bicycles under the ceiling, it is important to ensure that the ceiling mounts are truly strong and confidently withstand the weight of two-wheeled vehicles, otherwise the method will be too dangerous

Under the ceiling, two-wheeled vehicles will not take up any extra space

On a high stand

If space in the apartment is limited and there is simply nowhere to put the bike away, you can hang it horizontally on a high rack - this is one of the best options for compact storage of bicycles. The stand itself will take up a minimum of space, and the overall bicycle structure will be placed closer to the ceiling, in which case people will not touch the steering wheel or pedals while walking around the apartment. If desired, the bicycle transport can be turned into a design element of the interior, the rack can be additionally decorated with indoor plants, or thematic images can be hung on the wall nearby.

A neat rack allows you to compactly place the bike in your apartment

On the window

Window frames are opened infrequently in winter, so you can hang your bicycle in your apartment right next to the window. You will first need to equip brackets for the vehicle between the window and the ceiling or directly on the plastic part of the frame. In this case, free space in the apartment is saved very effectively.

The disadvantage of this storage option is that the bicycle will inevitably block part of the daylight. In addition, the storage method is only suitable for models made of light metal alloys - it is better not to hang a heavy bicycle on a window.

A lightweight bicycle bike can be hung on the window in an apartment

On the wardrobe

This option is suitable for owners of apartments with high ceilings. If the closet in the bedroom or living room does not rest against the ceiling, but occupies only half the height of the room, it is quite possible to place a bicycle on it. The main thing is to additionally secure the vehicle so that over time it does not fall off the cabinet. On a closet in an apartment, a bicycle bike will not take up any useful space at all and will wait out the winter in comfortable conditions.

In apartments with high ceilings, you can place bicycles on a cabinet

In the hallway as a hanger

A very original option for storing a bicycle in an apartment suggests using it instead of a hanger during the cold months. On the free wall in the hallway closer to the ceiling, it is necessary to place reliable brackets, hooks or metal pins on which the bicycle can be firmly secured.

In winter, a bicycle bike can act as an original hanger

The vehicle itself is often hung upside down on holders; a bicycle can be stored upside down, and the frame and handlebars down. The frame and handlebars are used throughout the winter as a bar for ordinary hangers with hangers. Of course, the two-wheeled vehicle must be completely clean so that clothes do not get dirty from contact with it.

Consequences of storage

With proper preservation of two-wheeled vehicles, you can avoid the impact of negative weather conditions on it, which can cause a breakdown that will require repair of the vehicle. But you should know what wintering a bicycle without preparing it can lead to.

  1. With sudden temperature changes, the quality of rubber deteriorates . Because of this, its wear increases several times.
  2. The frame, made of steel, tends to accumulate condensate inside the pipe . This will lead to corrosion and possibly rot.
  3. Loss of lubricant properties . Before the season you will have to completely change the lubricant.

The video shows in more detail what the situation can lead to when you incorrectly prepare your vehicle for storage.

Storing your bike in winter

The main stages of preparing for winter:

  • Inspect the bike for damage and malfunctions;
  • Clean from dirt and dust;
  • Dry after washing;
  • Lubricate all parts: chain, bearings, front and rear derailleurs, rear derailleur rollers, cables, main carriage, front fork shock absorption system, etc.
  • Loosen the brake cables;
  • Treat with a lubricant that prevents corrosion;
  • If necessary, paint;
  • Lubricate the tires with glycerin;
  • Depending on the position in which the bicycle will be stored (standing or hanging), it is necessary to either inflate the wheels or lower them.

A thorough inspection will prevent the occurrence of possible breakdowns and malfunctions, as well as prepare in advance the replacement or repair of failed parts. In addition, it doesn’t hurt to contact specialists who will conduct a full technical inspection of your faithful friend, which will significantly increase its service life.

Careful storage and regular cleaning of dirt is a kind of prevention of wear of parts and mechanisms, rust, cracks and paint peeling.

It is very important to dry your bike after washing it, because moisture remaining on it can cause corrosion and damage to the brake system.

Particular attention should be paid to the wheels. Tire and tube damage is the most common problem that arises after a small car sits for winter.

To avoid cracks, it is necessary to coat the tires with glycerin. If you are going to park your vehicle, then it is worth pumping up the wheels. If you have built a mechanism that will hold it suspended, then the wheels must be lowered.

Creating suitable conditions

First of all, you need to decide where there is free space for your transport. Most often this is either a balcony, or a garage, or a storage room. Of course, the most acceptable storage conditions are cleanliness, absence of high humidity and constant temperature changes, and direct sunlight. Not everyone can afford such storage conditions. Therefore, it is worth preparing the chosen place for the fact that it will be a refuge for your precious comrade. You will learn further about how to store a bicycle in winter on a balcony or in a garage.

Balcony seating

The word balcony still hides different conditions. The balcony may be glazed, may not have windows and be similar in terms of conditions to the street; it may be heated or insulated. The approach to storing a bike should depend on the conditions that await it on the balcony. Whether it is possible to store a bicycle on the balcony in winter should be judged only if a number of conditions are met.

Experts do not recommend storing it on an unglazed balcony. And you can store equipment on a regular glazed, but not heated or insulated balcony. For this, the best option would be to purchase a special case that will protect it from all negative influences. In addition, you can remove the wheels and store them in the apartment, and put the rest of the structure on the balcony.

You can hang your bike on special hooks or large nails. It should only be hung by the frame. Make sure that it does not get exposed to water from clothes being dried on the balcony, or melt water associated with rising outside temperatures.

Preparing a bicycle for long-term storage

In order not to get upset in the spring and not spend money on replacing parts, it is better to follow the rules for preparing a bicycle for wintering in a cold garage:

  • Before storing, thoroughly wipe all parts, removing all adhering dust and dirt;
  • Using a hard brush, you need to clean the bushings on the wheels, brakes and speed switches;
  • clean all components from grease and dust;
  • Using solvent it is easy to clean the chain, sprockets and tensioner. Inexpensive white spirit or acetone are suitable for cleaning. In order not to “bathe” parts in solvent, it is enough to spray them with solvent from a spray bottle and wipe them;
  • Carry out a detailed technical inspection and immediately correct all damage. Bicycle repairs will cost less in the fall than in the spring. And how nice it is to go for a ride in the spring and not think about repairs;
  • Before storing your bike, re-lubricate delicate parts - bushings, carriage, steering wheel and pedals. After degreasing and cleaning, the chain must also be lubricated, as well as the speed switches and brake cables;
  • Before storing a bicycle in the winter in a garage that is not heated, it is necessary to cover the entire surface of the chrome parts with silicone grease - it will protect the metal from frost and corrosion. If you don’t mind, you can cover the entire frame with silicone;
  • remove all tension from the cables and loosen the mounting springs.

  • it is also necessary to loosen the chain so that it is completely free (on small sprockets);
  • The tension of the springs can be loosened by disconnecting the brake levers and vibration breaks;
  • To prevent the rubber of the inner tubes from being damaged by the cold, it is necessary to deflate the wheels, but not completely;
  • if you plan to store a bicycle in a garage without a suspension (on wheels), then the tubes must be inflated at least once every two months so that the rim does not deform the tires and tubes;
  • if you lubricate tires with glycerin, this will protect the rubber during severe frosts;
  • remove all power supply components (navigator, lights) and be sure to remove the batteries. Batteries often leak during long-term storage;
  • loosen the pin under the saddle and on the stem. Carbon parts of equipment become very fragile in cold weather.

The equipment is ready for wintering, but where is the best place to store your bike?
