Making a Kit Kat cake: three quick recipes with photos

The fashion for Kit Kat cakes came to us from America. The popularity of this dessert is due to the fact that it is very simple to prepare, and at the same time it looks very impressive and festive. In addition, children adore such cakes.

Ingredients and tools you will need

In order to make a cake decoration in the form of a MMdems figurine from mastic, you need a set of the following ingredients and tools.

For the base of the figure:

  1. Puffed rice or puffed wheat. The amount of the ingredient depends on the size of the mastic figure.
  2. Marshmallow. Both the classic white marshmallow and multi-colored marshmallows are suitable.

For sculpting the figure:

  1. Mastic. You can prepare it yourself - here you will find many detailed step-by-step recipes for mastic and master classes for confectioners. But you can also use ready-made mass. For decorations you will need red, yellow, black, white and pink fondant.

Good to know!

The color of the mastic depends on the chosen character. For the classic version, red and yellow ememdams are made, but you can add figures in orange, brown, green and blue.

  1. Toothpick. You can use any other tool that is convenient for performing small operations of pressing and cutting out parts of a figurine, for example a knitting needle or a sharpened match.
  2. Knife. Preferably with a thin and sharp tip, with which it is convenient to cut mastic and cut through various parts of the product.
  3. Emma's candies. Any candy will do; their quantity depends on the size of the cake and the figures made, but not less than 130 grams.

A little history

The main ingredient of the dish is a hearty and nutritious KitKat bar, which appeared back in 1935 in the UK at the Rowentree factory. Talented confectioners have released crispy waffles coated in delicate chocolate in packaging reminiscent of lunch containers. The interesting idea attracted not only the local population, but also famous confectionery concerns, including Nestle.

The original name Rowentree's Chocolate Crisp was replaced by the familiar KitKat, and after 1989 the bar gained worldwide fame. All rights belong to the Americans - Hershey. The manufacturer gives the right to branches from different countries to experiment with flavors based on the preferences of the local population. Therefore, in Japan you can find a green bar with the addition of a special type of tea, and in Europe you can enjoy a dessert with the taste of Christmas pudding.

  • a large bag of M&Ms;

  • Salt - one teaspoon.
  • Baking powder for dough - one sachet.
  • Granulated sugar - one and a half glasses.
  • Water – 180 ml.
  • Vegetable oil - half a glass.
  • Chicken eggs - seven pieces.
  • Heavy cream – 500 grams.
  • Sour cream – 380 grams.
  • Powdered sugar – 150 grams.
  • Condensed milk – 100 grams.
  • Butter – 100 grams.
  • Strawberries – 500 grams.
  • Kit-Kat cookies – 13 packs.
  • M&M's candies - two packs.
  • Vanilla sugar – 50 grams.

We will prepare a cake from “Kitkat” and “Mmdems” according to the following recipe:

  • Mix sugar, salt, baking powder and sifted flour in a suitable bowl.
  • Pour cold water, melted (cooled) butter and yolks into the dry mixture. Mix the products using a mixer.
  • Beat the whites separately and then carefully fold them into the rest of the ingredients.
  • Cover the mold with parchment and pour the finished dough into it. Place the dough in a preheated oven.
  • After an hour, take out the biscuit, turn it upside down and cool. After this, cut the workpiece lengthwise into three parts.
  • Prepare cream from sour cream and sugar, and then coat the cakes with it.
  • After that, we begin to assemble the cake. To do this, place the cakes on top of each other and brush them with cream. Place cookies in the form of sides, and decorate the surface with colored dragees.

Tie the finished cake with a beautiful ribbon and serve it to the table.

Varieties of cake design

Decorating an M&Ms cake is a lot of room for creativity, it all depends on the imagination of the performer.

We offer several design options.

  1. We place cookies to the edges of the cake (pressing tightly, to each other or overlapping) to create a “fence”. Make sides out of it to put M&Ms on.
  2. The next option is to use Kit Kat chocolate instead of cookies. We break it into 2 strips and line it up vertically, tightly attaching it to the cakes and fixing it with cream. We place the chocolates close to each other and decorate them with a festive ribbon around the circumference. Then we scatter colored Em-and-Ems candies, distributing them as required by the theme.
  3. Divide the surface of the cake into sectors using Kit-Kat chocolate sticks. Then pour M&Ms into the compartments. You can pour them out randomly or arrange the candies by color in each sector. You will get a pie chart.
  4. You can dilute M&Ms with nuts or marmalade, chocolate figures or fancy-shaped candy. The main thing is that the decorations should completely hide the cake layers, creating the image of a chocolate barrel filled to the brim with colored peas.

Instructions

  • Beat condensed milk with eggs with a blender or mixer.
  • Add melted butter to the products and mix everything.
  • Pour sifted flour and slaked soda into the dough.
  • Add cocoa and mix everything well.
  • Bake two cakes, cool them, and then cut each into two parts (lengthwise).

Next, you will need to prepare cream for greasing the cakes. This is done very simply:

  • Melt chocolate and butter in a water bath.
  • Mix the products with condensed milk.
  • Brew a cup of ground coffee.
  • Add a drop of any flavoring to it.
  • Soak the cakes in coffee and brush them with cream.
  • Stack the pieces on top of each other.
  • Spread the top and sides of the cake with the remaining cream.
  • Place cookies on the sides, and pour M&M's inside the “fence”.

The “Mmdems” cake should stand in the refrigerator for a couple of hours, and then serve it.

How to make sweets with your own hands

If you don’t trust store-bought sweets, or simply can’t find them with the right taste and shape, you can make them yourself. DIY cake decorations for novice confectioners may seem too complicated to prepare, however, this is not so, there are many simple and straightforward recipes for sweets.

Classic chocolate candy recipe:

  • cocoa butter in a briquette – 200 gr.;
  • cocoa powder in a briquette – 400 g;
  • sugar syrup (can be replaced with healthy analogues) – 200 g;
  • fillers: nuts, dried fruits (optional);
  • confectionery forms.
  1. First, melt the butter over low heat in a metal bowl.
  2. After the butter becomes liquid, cocoa broken into pieces is added to it.
  3. Stir the mixture constantly and keep it on the stove until completely homogeneous.
  4. Afterwards, remove from heat and add syrup. Mix well.
  5. Pour the chocolate into the molds and let it harden.
  6. Place the molds in the refrigerator until the chocolate hardens completely.

Please note: the filling must be added to the chocolate after pouring into the molds.

A simple DIY chocolate candy recipe:

  • cocoa powder – 3 tbsp. l.;
  • condensed milk – 200 gr.;
  • butter – 100 gr.;
  • cookie crumbs – 70 gr.;

Children's coffee cake

Here is another version of an original dessert for a children's party. The Kitkat and Mmdems cake is sure to impress your little guests.

For the biscuit take:

  • Two eggs.
  • 300 grams of sugar.
  • A teaspoon of salt.
  • A teaspoon of vanilla sugar.
  • A teaspoon of ground coffee.
  • 100 grams of cocoa powder.
  • 200 ml milk.
  • 100 ml vegetable oil.
  • 350 grams of flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons of soda.
  • A packet of baking powder.
  • 100 ml boiling water.

For the cream you will need the following products:

  • 250 grams of soft butter.
  • 150 grams of cocoa powder.
  • 300 grams of sifted powdered sugar.
  • 70 ml milk.
  • Two teaspoons of vanilla sugar.
  • A teaspoon of ground coffee.

For decoration, take two bags of dragees and several packs of cookies.

How to make a cake

  • Combine sugar, vanilla, salt, ground coffee and eggs in a deep bowl. Whisk the ingredients.
  • Add milk, cocoa and vegetable oil to them. Mix everything well again.
  • Separately sift the flour with baking powder and add baking soda to the mixture.
  • Add the dry mixture into the liquid mixture gradually, remembering to stir. At the very end, pour boiling water into the dough (in a thin stream). Mix everything again using a mixer.
  • Pour the finished dough into two forms, and then bake the cakes until ready.
  • Turn the biscuits upside down onto a wire rack, place a small weight on them, and cool.

Let's move on to preparing the cream:

  • Cream butter with cocoa and ground coffee.
  • Gradually combine it with powdered sugar and milk.
  • Add vanilla and beat again.

When ready, cut the biscuits lengthwise into equal pieces. After this, generously coat the cakes with cream and stack them on top of each other. Then grease the surface of the dessert in the same way, place cookies on the sides, and decorate the top with sweets. Serve the “Mmdems” cake to the table when it is well soaked in cream.

Decorating the cake with candies

It is simply impossible to spoil a homemade cake with chocolate or other sweets. Today in stores you can find candies of various shapes, with various delicious fillings: nuts, creams, fruits. Therefore, if you don’t have any time for decorating, just buy ready-made candies and use them to decorate your culinary masterpiece.

Small tricks:

  1. Candies must be attached to a sufficiently sticky surface. Thick butter cream, cream with condensed milk, chocolate or caramel glaze, jam or confiture are suitable. The entire dessert must be thoroughly coated before the candies are attached to it.
  2. Small round dragees can be randomly sprinkled on the surface and pressed with your hands.
  3. Large chocolates can be arranged in a specific order, especially if different shapes and textures are used.
  4. Candies can be used not only on the surface of baked goods, but also inside. It is very simple to prepare such a dessert with a surprise: the inside of the finished product is cut out, sweets are placed in this cavity, then the structure is covered with the top cake and the dessert is decorated as desired. Once cut, a secret will be revealed inside, which both adults and little sweet tooths will appreciate.
  5. Immediately after decorating, place the candy-covered dessert in the refrigerator. This way they will stick to the coating better and will not fall off.

For registration you can use:

  • chocolates of any shape;
  • small jelly beans;
  • "sea pebbles";
  • peanuts in chocolate or white glaze;
  • small toffees;
  • gummy candies;

Beat eggs with sugar.

Melted and cooled butter (250 g).

Mix and sift flour, baking powder and 3 tbsp. cocoa.

The dough should be quite thick.

Pour it into the multicooker bowl, which I greased with oil and sprinkled with semolina for good measure, and bake the biscuit on the “baking” mode for 1 hour. If you cook in the oven, bake the biscuit at 175*C for about 50 minutes.

Let the biscuit cool completely.

Then cut it into three layers.

For the cream, beat sour cream with powdered sugar. Melt chocolate and 70 grams of butter in the microwave or in a water bath, let cool and add to sour cream.

Mix and add 3 tbsp. cocoa.

Place the first cake layer and soak it. I soaked it in sugar syrup in a one to one ratio.

Then apply the cream.

Again the cake layer and a layer of cream.

I soak the third cake in the same way, turn it over and place it on top. I coat the sides and top of the cake with the remaining cream.

We decorate the top with M&M's and sprinkles, and I decorated the sides with “sweet snow” soufflé. Let the finished cake brew for several hours.

Caramel for decorating cakes

Caramel is a universal product for decorating baked goods. You can use it to make glaze or openwork decorations, inscriptions, figures, flowers and leaves. You can use store-bought multi-colored or plain caramel, or you can also make it yourself.

The simplest recipe is to boil 100 grams of sugar with 2 tablespoons of water until thick. Ready-made caramels without filling can be melted in the microwave or in a water bath.

There are several options for decorating a homemade caramel cake:

  1. You can dip pieces of fruit into liquid caramel. Strawberries, for example, look very nice. It is held on its tail and dipped almost to the top in caramel, the excess mass is allowed to drip off, placed on the cake and placed in the cold to harden.
  2. Caramel can be poured in the form of openwork patterns onto parchment. After hardening, the workpiece is removed and placed (or placed vertically) on the cake.
  3. You can write on the opaque caramel by pouring it directly from a spoon or bowl with a spout onto the surface of the cake.
  4. By adding chocolate, butter, and sugar to caramel, you can make icing for the cake.
  5. In a recessed container (cup, small bowl), cover the entire surface with liquid caramel. When the mass hardens, remove the workpiece. You will get a vase that can be placed on the cake and filled with berries.

Secrets of working with caramel:

  1. Melted caramel reaches a temperature of 160 degrees, so you need to work with this material very carefully.
  2. The melted mass freezes very quickly. If you need a lot of pieces, melt the caramel not all at once, but in parts.
  3. You can add flavors and dyes to the mixture.
  4. For cooking, use a saucepan with the thickest bottom and stir the mixture constantly.

How to make emendam base

The MMs theme is a great idea for decorating a children's birthday cake. If you are expecting a lot of guests, you can order a two-tier dessert at any pastry shop or bake it yourself according to your own recipe.

Start making fun figures by making the base. Need to:

  1. Melt the marshmallows. To do this, use a microwave or water bath. Well-heated sugar marshmallows become soft and chewy.

  2. Add puffed rice or wheat to the melted mass. Mix the mass well, it should turn out quite thick and viscous.

  3. Make blank figures. Red emendams are round in shape, yellow ones are oval. The rest of the figures are oval in shape, except for the orange character.

  4. Remove irregularities. Some subscribers ask whether the workpieces need to be lubricated with cream to remove unevenness. No, for smoothness it is enough to cover them in several layers with mastic of the appropriate color.

After the basics of future decorations are ready, you can begin sculpting the “face” and details of the figures.

Decorate the cake with powdered sugar

I started using stencils to decorate cakes a few years ago. It’s very simple, but it turns out so beautifully. Moreover, I didn’t buy stencils, but simply transferred the design I liked onto thick paper. It looked like it was the moisture-proof side of a tea box. I cut everything out with a stationery knife and still use it.

Some of my friends' homemade templates are laminated. Then I shook off the powdered sugar or cocoa and put them away.

They are placed on the cake and sprinkled with powder.

It is advisable to choose a closed ornament that can be easily cut out. Below are design options using powdered sugar and cocoa.

And once I saw the process of decorating the cake, also using powder, but using a napkin.

It turned out very nice! The lace and ornament stood out strongly against the black glaze. I didn't even need cream.

How the “face” of emendam is sculpted and other details

It is quite easy to sculpt the faces and details of the emendams; a child can complete this task under the guidance of an adult.

Face sculpting technology

All the faces of the figures are made in the same likeness and differ in the position of the corners of the mouth, eyebrows, and eyes.

  1. First you should prepare the necessary mastic. You will need black and white mastic, from which the eyes and mouth will be sculpted, as well as mastic in the color of the selected figures.
  2. In order to sculpt the eyes, you need to roll out small balls of white mastic, flatten them a little and stick them on the workpiece.
  3. To sculpt eyelids, you need to take a small piece of mastic of the appropriate color and roll it out into a thin layer. Cut out a circle for the figurine's eyes of a suitable size and cut it in half. As a result, you get two eyelids, which should be stuck on the blank eyes. The eyelid should cover the eye to the middle. A thinly rolled mastic flagellum should be stuck to the cut of the eyelid - this technique will add realism to the eye.

  4. Next make the pupils. Roll small balls from black mastic and stick them on the white eye circles.
  5. Make eyebrows from small flagella of black mastic.

  6. Cut through the mouth with a toothpick and trim the cut line with a thin flagellum. Fill the inside with black mastic.

Attach the mastic parts by brushing them with water or egg white using a brush or your finger.

Technology of molding parts

The details of the figures are shoes and gloves. In order to make shoes, you need :

  1. Take white mastic and mold two identical parts in the form of slightly flattened ovals, which are pressed in the middle with a toothpick.
  2. Frame the sole of the shoes with a thin rope.

  3. A small round concave part is attached to the shoe - the junction with the leg.
  4. The stem of emendams is a small rope rolled from yellow mastic.

In order to make gloves, you need:

  1. Make 2 small drop-shaped blanks from white mastic.

  2. Use a knife to cut through 3 fingers and smooth out their ends.
  3. Add a thumb.

  4. The glove is attached to the hand using a small round concave piece, just like a boot.
  5. The arm of emendams is a flagellum made of yellow mastic.
