How to store bee pollen at home

Just like propolis and royal jelly, bee pollen has a lot of substances and microelements that are valuable and useful for the human body. When pollinating flowers, bees pick up the pollen with their furry paws and carry it into the hive. Processed by the secretion of the jaw glands, the pollen turns into bee bread and becomes food for worker bees.

Bee collecting pollen

Beekeepers have found a way to extract this pollen so that people can use it for food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic purposes. Pollen contains all the necessary amino acids, vitamins, proteins and minerals. It is widely used in both traditional and non-traditional medicine. With a systematic approach, it can cure a number of diseases.

The method of collecting, drying, as well as proper storage of pollen affects its healing properties, so all standards must be observed.

QUESTION: How long can pollen be stored?

Prudent Princess! A rigorous answer to this question seems to me rather difficult. And the point here is this... This is what the book “Tips for Beekeepers” says in the chapter “Canning and Storing Pollen”:

“...we studied the loss of biologically active substances in pollen during its storage for 6 - 9 months after preservation... The dominant influence of the plant type on the loss of biologically active substances was established. For example, the loss of ascorbic acid over 9 months of storage ranged from 10% (cherry) to 62% (apple), catechins - from 3.4% (apple) to 49.5% (dandelion). Therefore, the shelf life of pollen must be set taking into account its species and intended use.”

In the book, we are most likely talking about pollen preserved by drying and placing it in pasteurized, hermetically sealed jars, stored in semi-darkness under normal temperature and humidity conditions for storing most products. This is the most common way.

Obviously, if the species affiliation (from what type of plant the pollen was collected) is not determined, or there is a mixture in an indefinite ratio, if the purpose of using the pollen is not clear, or this purpose is to obtain the maximum full effect from consuming pollen for food, then in this case the fresher it is, the better. Modern technologies for preserving pollen probably extend the shelf life, but they are not widely available to ordinary beekeepers. Therefore, after all, FRESHNESS should become the motto of both the seller and the buyer.

If you eat beebread, you can eat it for any period of time (I store it in honeycombs for a whole year or more), since its very natural purpose is to store pollen for future use in a natural way.

And if you eat pollen, do it as fresh as possible. How fresh? I think this period should be determined by the duration of the period of “activity” of pollen of a particular plant species, but the duration of the period of activity - I don’t know, I don’t know...

probably by the lifespan of an individual flower or the entire flowering period of a plant. In the first case, the count is in days, in the other - in weeks and months. This duration varies for different plant species.

Nowadays, the information and transport infrastructure have become so developed that there is an objective opportunity to get truly FRESH pollen on your table and from the type of plant you need.

However, this possibility has not yet been realized, and if realized, it has not yet been distributed on a large scale. In order for this to happen, it is necessary, neither more nor less, to build an All-Russian People's Beekeeper. And apparently, this is the only way that gets rid of all sorts of obscurantism.

The healing properties of bee pollen are much higher than those of honey. Due to the fact that bees treat it with their own enzymes during collection, it is the least allergenic of all beekeeping products. But the beneficial qualities of pollen can quickly be lost.

Amino acids and vitamins are lost especially quickly. This is due to the fact that after collection, biochemical processes continue to occur in pollen for a long time, as a result of which beneficial substances are lost. In order for this product to remain medicinal for a long time, it must be properly prepared and stored.

How long does bee pollen last?

Before properly storing a product, it must be subjected to the necessary quality harvesting.
The bee product consists largely of water, and in order for its beneficial qualities and properties to last as long as possible, excess water must be dried. For this purpose, specialized drying cabinets are used. The shelf life of bee pollen will directly depend on the temperature conditions in the drying cabinet. For this purpose, special technical documentation has been developed. Experts in their field pour the product into a container, set the required temperature, maintain a certain amount of time for drying. And only after this a unique product is obtained that saves human health. Accordingly, a properly prepared product will be stored much longer.

How long does bee pollen last? If all the conditions described above are met, plus the product is stored in a glass or food-grade plastic container with a tightly sealed lid, then the aging period will be 2 years.

Of course, during this time all enzymes, minerals, active substances and vitamins will be in the required quantities.

But it is important to remember that the longer a product is stored, the less beneficial it becomes for the body. Therefore, if bee pollen is used to treat any serious disease, it can be used for about one and a half years

The shelf life of pollen also depends on whether it contains any harmful insects. A sweet dish attracts many pests, and if the container with the medicine is kept open, then it is likely that various microorganisms will grow in it, which will harm human health. It is strictly forbidden to keep this natural medicine in a warm and unventilated area.

The most optimal option for containing the active substance is a dry and darkened basement. It maintains the temperature that is desirable for most medicinal substances. Low illumination also does its useful job - all active components do not interact, and when consumed they have maximum impact on a person.

Properly maintained pollen storage is a quality medicine and an excellent means for preventive purposes.

How nice it is to watch the picture: working bees fly from flower to flower and buzz sweetly. And if you think about it, you understand that this is a most valuable and labor-intensive process. Bees grab pollen on their paws and carry it to their home, where they make milk from it - the diet of the larvae and the queen. Let's talk about bee pollen, its beneficial properties and contraindications.

Flower and bee pollen are different concepts. Even in biology lessons, we were told that pollen is produced from the anthers of plants. We need another type of such a wonderful gift of nature. Bee pollen is a variety of nuggets that have been processed by the enzymes of buzzing workers. This pollen has a beautiful name - pollen.

Collecting and storing pollen is a complex and time-consuming process. A worker bee makes about 10 flights a day. During one such flight, she can bring about 20 mg of pollen. Experienced beekeepers have developed unique technologies for collecting this valuable gift of nature. So, they set traps - obstacles where the bees lose part of their prey.

It should be noted how significant, important and necessary bee pollen is for the growth and development of the inhabitants of the hive. How does this complex chain happen? Bee pollen is the most important food product for the entire family, which confidently occupies the highest level of the pedestal in importance. This invaluable vital component can increase the mass of the larva hundreds of times in just a couple of days. Thanks to this food raw material, the wings of growing bees straighten and become stronger, and all the working glands are formed.

An important and interesting fact is that bee pollen is a product for the production of royal jelly. But this delicacy is necessary for the queen of the uterus. This is a clear picture of how useful and significant pollen is for the growth and development of such huge bee offspring: for little larvae, nurse bees, and builders.

So, we figured out that bee pollen is an amazing gift of nature that is simply necessary for humans. The benefits of this product are invaluable for pregnant women, nursing mothers, growing children, athletes and men who continue the family line.

Pollen collection and preparation for storage

Bee pollen is collected using pollen traps.

It is necessary to remove the product from pollen collectors before evening. Leaving pollen overnight can cause dampness.

The composition of pollen consists largely of water. To preserve its beneficial qualities during storage, it must be thoroughly dried.

Usually beekeepers use drying cabinets. In the future, the shelf life of the pollen will directly depend on the temperature conditions set in the cabinet.

If drying is carried out in a special room, then the following conditions must be met:

  • darkness;
  • ventilation;
  • humidity not higher than 10%;
  • temperature within 20-40 °C.

The collected pollen is scattered on sheets.

The layer thickness is about 1 cm. Drying takes three days. It must be stirred periodically.

Dried pollen, ready for storage, has certain properties:

  1. It becomes like lumps that are difficult to crush.
  2. When poured onto plywood from a height of 20 cm, it produces a sound similar to a light metallic ringing.

After this, you need to clean the pollen from the debris.

There is a faster way to dry the pollen. To do this, use a vacuum in which the product is dried for 2 hours at a temperature of 120 °C.

Pollen. Storage

Preservation of pollen product

To do this, dried pollen must be ground in a coffee maker. Mix it with honey (liquid) or

powdered sugar one to one. You will get a homogeneous mass. Pour the product into sterilized glass jars. Do not fill the dish completely with your finger. Treat the lids with wax. To do this, the wax needs to be melted. If there is no wax, replace it with paraffin. Store at a temperature range of 0 – 4 ͦС.

The second way to preserve pollen is very similar to the bee technology for preparing bee bread. Take two hundred and fifty ml. water and dissolve one hundred and fifty grams of honey in it. Heat strictly to 40 ͦͦС. Mix a kilogram of dried pollen with prepared sweet water. Place the resulting mass in clean glass jars and place in a warm place for six days for the fermentation process. The temperature should be 35-40 ͦС, after which the jars are closed. Products should be stored in a dry and cool place.

Good health to you!

Freshly collected pollen contains significant amounts of water, easily digestible carbohydrates and proteins, and is therefore susceptible to mold, yeast and putrefactive microorganisms. Microbiological spoilage of pollen is associated with the breakdown of nutrients, the formation and accumulation of toxic compounds. In addition, active physiological and biochemical processes continue in fresh pollen, causing irreversible consumption of nutrients and a decrease in the biological value of the product. This is why freshly collected pollen should be canned immediately. Pollen is collected from the pollen trap daily, preferably before dusk. You cannot leave it overnight: it will become damp and active processes will begin in it, which will inevitably lead to its damage.

The most common method of preserving pollen is drying. Most often, it is dried in a shaded place at room temperature and good ventilation, scattered on sheets of paper in a layer approximately 1 cm thick and stirred frequently. Pollen should not be dried in the sun. Air drying continues for several days. The dried product is packaged in bags or bags made of plastic film, the edges of which are welded with an iron, or in dry sterilized glass cans, which are immediately hermetically sealed using a seaming machine. Store in a dark, dry place at a temperature not exceeding 20°C. A good result is obtained by drying the pollen at a temperature of 40 - 45 C (drying time is several hours) or 60 ° C (2 - 2.5 hours).

Georgian researchers G.D. Madzgarashvili, D.I. Nikuradze and B.S. Tsitlidze recommend drying pollen in a vacuum at a temperature of 120°C. The duration of the process is 75 - 90 minutes. This mode ensures good preservation of biologically active compounds and effective destruction of beebread moths.

The most complete preservation of the biological value of the product is achieved through molecular drying: pre-frozen pollen is dried in a high vacuum. A successful way to preserve pollen is to mix it with candied bee honey in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. The mixture of pollen and honey is stored in hermetically sealed, dry, sterilized glass jars in a dark place. You can mix pollen with powdered sugar in the same ratio.

Czechoslovakian researcher J. Svoboda proposed a method for preserving pollen, based on an analogy with the process of beebread formation in a beehive: 150 g of honey is dissolved in 0.25 liters of water, heated to a temperature not exceeding 40 ° C, 1 kg of pollen is added and mixed thoroughly. The jar is placed in a warm place for 4 - 6 days (at 35 - 40 ° C), after which it is sealed and stored in a refrigerator or cold cellar.

Pollen storage

To ensure that the useful bee product has a shelf life as long as possible, dried pollen must be preserved immediately. It is best to use a pre-sterilized jar, closing it with a seaming machine.

At home, you can use another sealed container, for example, a jar with a ground-in lid or a bag.

It is important that insects do not get inside. For the same purpose, you should not store the pollen in a warm and humid place. To create optimal storage conditions, the following rules must be observed:

  • Dark and dry room.
  • Temperature up to +14 °C.
  • Under such conditions, pollen can be stored for two years. The best place for storage is a dark, dry basement.

    But it should be remembered that even if all storage conditions are met, the healing properties of pollen decrease over time.

    Thus, it is recommended to use pollen stored at home as a medicine only for 1.5 years. When purchasing it at a pharmacy, you need to check the date of manufacture. If you notice that the expiration date is ending, it is better not to buy this product.

Secrets of the right choice

The quality of purchased pollen affects the shelf life and content of nutrients. To avoid mistakes, you need to pay attention to the following:

  1. When collected, the pollen has a bright, rich color.
  2. The heterogeneity of the particles proves its naturalness.
  3. Well-dried pollen becomes faded in the cold.
  4. It is almost impossible to crush the peas with your fingers.

If you purchase unprocessed pollen, you should immediately buy a jar of fresh honey for mixing. It is convenient to use a blender or mixer, monitoring the degree of dissolution until a homogeneous mass is obtained.

You should not buy the product along roads or near large enterprises and livestock farms. The pollen will quickly absorb foreign odors and harmful substances from car exhausts and industrial emissions. This product can cause poisoning.

It is best to maintain health and carry out prevention during the off-season using natural means; pollen is perfect as a universal remedy for children and adults.

Methods for extending shelf life

At home, you can extend the shelf life of pollen by using a natural preservative.

  1. Mix with honey in a 1:1 ratio. The result is an excellent remedy used for colds and viral diseases. Honey can not only extend the shelf life, but also improve the taste of the product.
  2. Mix with powdered sugar in a ratio of 1:2. The powder adsorbs moisture, extending shelf life, and also removes the bitterness inherent in bee pollen.

Preserved pollen can be stored for up to 5 years. But we must understand that the healing qualities will still be lost. After six months of storage, about 25% of the beneficial properties will be lost, and after a year – about 40%.

Properly collected, stored and stored bee pollen is an excellent preventive and therapeutic agent.

To increase the shelf life of flower pollen and preserve its medicinal properties, it must be kept in strictly defined conditions. Over time, the benefits of the product are lost due to the biochemical processes occurring in it. There is a special harvesting and storage technology that allows you to preserve the healing qualities and extend the shelf life of flower pollen, even with the highest quality processing and maintenance.

How to prepare pollen for storage at home

To preserve the pollen for a long time, it is important to properly collect and dry it.

Collecting is done using pollen collectors. The product must be removed during the day, otherwise it may become damp at night. Moisture from pollen must be removed to avoid the appearance of harmful microorganisms and insects in it.

Drying must be carried out in compliance with certain rules:

  1. temperature from 20 to 40 °C;
  2. humidity no more than 10%;
  3. darkness;
  4. good ventilation.

At home, drying should be done on parchment sheets. The pollen is laid out on them in a layer of no more than 1 cm. It is necessary to constantly mix the pollen - at least once a day or more often.

The process usually takes about three days. After drying, the pollen is cleaned of impurities using a sieve with cells no larger than 2 mm. For better effect, you can use a fan or hair dryer.

Pollen prepared for storage is collected in dense lumps that do not wrinkle when pressed. If you sprinkle it from a 20-centimeter height, the sound when falling will be metallic.

In industry, drying cabinets are used, which speed up the procedure to one day. The necessary conditions are created inside, and exposure to air flow is also added. Stirring is not necessary with this method.

Storage conditions

For long-term preservation of qualities, it is important to know how to store bee pollen correctly. The pollen, which has undergone the necessary preparation, can be kept in glass jars or plastic bags. The container must be sterile.

The product is poured into the jars up to the neck, leaving as little air as possible. After this, close tightly with ground-in or screw-on lids. It is important to prevent moisture from getting on the pollen and to ensure complete tightness.

There is no need to compact the pollen, as this can lead to its spoilage. It is unacceptable for insects to get into containers when canning.

If tin lids are used, their inner surface must be lubricated with wax, since contact with metal causes unwanted chemical processes. After preservation, bee pollen is ready for storage. The necessary conditions:

  • temperature from 0 to 14 °C, optimally 9 °C;
  • lack of sunlight and other light;
  • low humidity.
  • Thus, the best place to store canned pollen is in the refrigerator or dry basement. Freezing is unacceptable, since during crystallization all useful elements are destroyed. You should also not store the product in a warm place with high humidity.

    Shelf life of bee pollen

    How long pollen can be stored depends on its purpose. Hermetically packaged, subject to all necessary storage rules, it retains its beneficial properties for up to one and a half years. Up to 2 years of age, it is permissible to eat pollen.

    However, for medicinal purposes it must be used as early as possible. During the first year, the concentration of nutrients decreases by almost half. If the pollen has expired or was not stored correctly, product consumption:

    1. at best will not bring any benefit;
    2. in the worst case, it can cause poisoning or disruption of the gastrointestinal tract.

    The use of any expired product entails serious consequences for the body.

    And pollen is no exception. A healthy product enriched with vitamins can turn into poison. The health of people who eat it depends on how pollen is stored.

    Bee pollen and its varieties

    Bee pollen or pollen are plastic, round lumps of plant pollen that are attached to the legs of bees while collecting nectar. Hardworking insects treat their hind limbs with saliva, which is why, after several hours of flying from plant to plant, they collect pollen in the form of dense balls.

    The bees take them with them to the hive, where they then clean the lumps from their legs and feed on them. This is where another name for this product came from - bee bread.

    In addition to its nutritional function, pollen plays the role of a kind of prophylactic agent for various bee diseases.

    • After all, the substance contains a lot of useful substances:
    • protein - 35% of the total mass, while in terms of the number of important amino acids it is 5-6 times higher than milk and beef;
    • healthy fats - up to 15%;
    • vitamins: ascorbic acid, biotin, riboflavin, folic acid, etc.;
    • minerals: zinc, chromium, silver, palladium, cobalt, etc.;
    • biologically active substances: carotenodes, nucleic acids, phenols.

    Important! Bee pollen is often also called beebread.
    However, this is not entirely correct, because beebread is pollen that has already been processed by bees. It contains more sugars and a reduced proportion of fats, although in terms of healthiness it is not much inferior to pure pollen. Research has shown that depending on the place where pollen is collected, the color varies and the properties of the product itself differ:

    • light green balls are collected from the linden tree. Their use will prevent colds, and will help lower the temperature of already sick patients;
    • Yellow pollen from willow is recognized as a natural antibiotic. It is recommended for infectious diseases, helps overcome negative microflora without side effects;
    • bright orange dandelion products promote recovery from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
    • The light pink pollen is obtained from flowering clover. It is useful for people who have problems with the heart and blood vessels.

    How to extend the shelf life of pollen

    If there is a need to leave pollen for a longer period, you can mix it with other products:

    • Honey is also useful for the prevention and treatment of many diseases, as well as maintaining immunity. If pollen is mixed with it, observing the proportions of 1:1, the shelf life of bee pollen in this case will be about 5 years. Honey is an excellent preservative and will help the pollen preserve its properties a little longer. This mixture is a good remedy for viral and infectious colds.
    • Bee pollen can last longer when mixed with powdered sugar. The substance helps absorb moisture and reduces the feeling of bitterness. Sand and refined sugar are not suitable in this case, since they will not interact with pollen. For one part of pollen you need 2 parts of powdered sugar.

    It must be remembered that, even if pollen is stored in such ways, its beneficial qualities fade over time. Even if the product is edible for a long period, the therapeutic effect will remain for a maximum of the first two years. However, the taste will not be lost; the above compounds can be consumed as a treat until the expiration date.

    Results

    Bee pollen is a very valuable product due to its content of vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

    It is widely used in medicine, as well as as a prophylactic agent. It has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system, improves blood circulation, and enhances the effect in the treatment of the liver and pancreas. All these qualities do not last long.

    If maintained incorrectly, all substances of value are destroyed very quickly. To obtain the effect, storage must be carried out in compliance with all rules, and the use of an expired product is strictly not recommended.

    If you have additional information on how else you can extend the shelf life of bee pollen, please leave a comment. We are interested in your experience in this area.

    Is there anything healthier than natural honey?

    Among beekeeping products there is a substance in which the concentration of healing properties is even higher. This is pollen or bee pollen. The second name reflects the collection method: the bees collect the yellow mass and carry it to the hive on their limbs.

    By the way, bee and flower pollen are not the same thing. At the end of the last century, people learned to collect valuable substances without the participation of bees. On the one hand, this helped reduce the cost of the product, on the other hand, it had to sacrifice usefulness.

    The fact is that during collection, bees moisten their load with saliva, which contains special enzymes. They are not present in the flower mass, and the final product, accordingly, does not have such a healing effect. In addition, bees neutralize allergens contained in pollen, therefore reducing the likelihood of allergic reactions from the body.

    To maximize the shelf life of bee pollen, it should be thoroughly dried immediately after collection. This procedure helps to increase the concentration of useful components in a smaller volume of product. The yellow mass is poured into trays 1.5 cm thick and sent to a drying cabinet at a temperature of 40 degrees.

    Dries until crumbly. Strict adherence to the temperature regime is mandatory, otherwise the destruction of important enzymes and hormones will follow. After drying, you need to get rid of impurities and debris; at home this can be done with a fan or hairdryer.

    Beneficial features

    The fresher the pollen, the more beneficial properties it contains. Their concentration is halved by the end of the first year of storage, and after 24 months the beekeeping product does not represent any health value.

    The consumption of pollen is indicated for people with diseases of the cardiovascular system. Thanks to its ability to remove excess cholesterol, the substance improves the condition of blood vessels and blood quality. Taking pollen as an additional drug enhances the effectiveness of treatment of the liver and pancreas.

    By consuming bee pollen, you can resist viral diseases, because it has an antibacterial effect. In addition, the substance helps strengthen the immune system and increase mental and physical activity. Special compounds support the body during hormonal imbalances.

    Method of use

    How much pollen can you eat per day? The dose for an adult is approximately 10-15 g per day. Take the substance 2 times a day: morning and evening half an hour before meals.

    It is advisable to take the second dose 4 hours before bedtime. The granules must be dissolved in the mouth until completely dissolved. The course lasts 1 month and is repeated 3 times a year.

    Children should be given pollen after consulting a doctor. The daily dose at 3 years is approximately 4 g.

    Contraindications for use are allergies, diabetes, frequent bleeding.

    Application and treatment

    Treatment with pollen is simple. No special knowledge required. It is enough to learn the simple rules for using pollen.

    Flower pollen has a protective shell that is resistant to gastric juice substances. Therefore, you need to take this healing natural substance about an hour before meals. To facilitate digestion in the stomach, either chew the pollen well or add a little boiled water to it for two to three hours to soak.

    This makes the product easier to digest, which is important for the body, which devotes its strength to fighting diseases.

    You can scoop up to 4-5 grams of flower pollen with a teaspoon, and 10 grams with a dessert spoon. The daily dose is 5 grams. The use of higher dosages of healing granules is best done under the supervision of a specialist. Excessive use can cause various problems. Therefore, it is better to adhere to the dose of bee product recommended for humans.

    Flower pollen is useful even for those who do not complain about their health. If a person lives in a state of increased neuro-physical stress, an all-natural pill made by bees will support, encourage, give strength, and protect against diseases.

    As a general strengthening remedy, restoring strength, helping to adapt to sudden changes in the environment, pollen is recommended to be used 2-3 times a day, 1-1/3 teaspoons per day. The same dosage of the healing substance is recommended to be used to increase mental performance.

    As an immunostimulant, for those who are often sick for a long time, it is useful to take 1/2-2/3 teaspoon of pollen 2-3 times a day.

    For chronic fatigue, tendency to despondency, exhaustion, preparation for surgery and after it, the single dose taken is the same - half a teaspoon. Duration of use is from 2-3 to 3-6 weeks. Weakened patients are usually prescribed two months of treatment with a sedative with a ten-day break.

    The main task and function of pollen in the fight against diseases is to supply and saturate the human body with natural remedies. They are used by humans. He fights diseases, hardships, and illness, using the natural healing power of the product collected and prepared by the bee.

    Features for children

    Children are growing, developing creatures, little balanced, less protected. It is more difficult for children to resist diseases, so the gift of bees is a valuable healing agent. To treat and prevent diseases in children, it is better to use the healing powers of nature and turn to natural healing remedies. Doses of bee product for children are no more than half a teaspoon. When measuring the dose, it is better to use a coffee spoon. They prefer pollen with honey.

    • An anemic child will benefit from its use in a mixture with honey and milk. Take a coffee spoon three times a day.
    • For vascular problems, take pollen mixed with honey for a month, one teaspoon three times a day.
    • It is useful to take the pollen product with honey in the morning on an empty stomach with low blood pressure, which often occurs in girls of adolescence. Their body is being rebuilt and needs support from bee products.
    • If children require enhanced nutrition, butter should be added to the mixture of pollen and honey.

    Dishes based on a pollen-honey mixture with milk, walnuts and oatmeal will also be useful and healing for children’s developing bodies.

    When using a bee product, you need to monitor the children’s reaction to the product and not exceed the daily dose. If unwanted skin rashes or other symptoms of a reaction of rejection of the product by the body of children appear, the use of the product should be stopped.

    Storage location and temperature

    For long-term storage, bee pollen is poured into an airtight container. At home, this can be a jar or a plastic bag, the main thing is to close it tightly to prevent insects from getting inside. You cannot compress the substance, otherwise it will “suffocate”.

    You cannot store pollen in a warm and humid place, otherwise you will not be able to avoid uninvited guests. Ideal storage conditions are a dark, dry place with a temperature of 0 to +14 degrees, so feel free to put the container with the pollen in the refrigerator. The shelf life, subject to the above-mentioned regimen, is 2 years.

    However, you should know that as a medicine, the beekeeping product is stored for a shorter period of time. The fact is that even under the most ideal conditions, beneficial substances are lost over time, and pollen no longer has the value it had at the beginning of the storage process.

    To treat diseases, it is better to use bee pollen no older than 1 year. When purchasing from a pharmacy, pay attention to the period specified by the manufacturer. If it is close to the end, it is better to refuse the purchase.

    You can extend the shelf life of pollen using a natural preservative. Mix it with honey in a ratio of 1:2.

    At home, such a mixture will be an excellent prophylactic during periods of viral and infectious diseases. Pollen increases the concentration of substances valuable to the body several times, and honey extends the shelf life and improves the taste of the product. The mixture can be stored for up to 5 years in a cool, dry, dark place.

    Important

    • Flower pollen contains less nutrients than bee pollen.
    • The older the pollen, the fewer valuable components it contains.

    The benefits of natural medicine in the form of bee pollen are obvious. If there are no contraindications for use, you can strengthen and maintain health by taking just 1 tablespoon per day. The main thing is to take care to keep the beekeeping product fresh for as long as possible.

    The role of pollen in the life of bees

    The role of bee bread for the bee colony should not be underestimated. It is food for bees and a source of protein.

    Top articles: How long can frozen mushrooms be stored in the freezer

    If there is a deficiency of bee bread in the hive, the bee family stops developing.

    In worker bees, the secretion of wax decreases, and as a result, the construction of honeycombs decreases.

    The amount of royal jelly in nurse bees decreases. As a result, the queen receives less food and begins to lay fewer eggs.

    Nurse bees will be able to feed fewer larvae.

    And in the complete absence of bee bread, the bee colony does not grow seed at all.

    Therefore, bee bread is also called the bread of bees.

    Therefore, beekeepers need to know the benefits of pollen and beebread.

    Collecting pollen in an apiary

    Collecting pollen from bees using a pollen trap.

    But the product is also useful for people.

    It is much more healing than bee honey, as it contains many more substances beneficial to the human body.

    The composition of pollen is so rich in various vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates and other elements that people use it as a dietary supplement, medicine and prevention against various diseases.

    With its healing properties, pollen can compete with ginseng and other medicinal herbs.

    To collect product from bees, beekeepers came up with a pollen trap.

    It is installed on the hive during the flowering season of plants.

    Since pollen is not the final product of bees, the beekeeper needs to take care of its storage.

    Freshly selected pollen has a lot of moisture, which promotes the growth of mold and various acid-putrefactive bacteria.

    Therefore, beekeepers have come up with ways to store the product at home.

    From the beginning, the selected pollen must be dried in a shaded, well-ventilated place, at a temperature of no more than 40 degrees.

    Bee pollen should not be dried in the sun.

    There are also special devices for drying the product. But when using such devices and devices, some useful microelements are lost.

    Pollen is very hygroscopic.

    After drying, it can again pick up moisture in the air.

    Therefore, it is recommended to store it at home in tight packaging.

    Freezing it is also not recommended.

    The best way to store pollen at home, while preserving all its beneficial properties, is obtained by preserving it with honey or powdered sugar.

    When collecting pollen, I dry it for several days in the shade, and then preserve it with fresh honey.

    When canning, it is recommended to mix the product with honey in a ratio of 1 x 1. But you can also mix a larger amount of pollen in proportion to honey.

    I put the mixed pollen in liter jars on the floor and close them with a nylon lid. Then store it at room temperature.

    When stored this way, it does not lose its properties for several years. But the product is most useful in the first year.
