Grog - classic and other recipes at home

Grog spread throughout the world thanks to British sailors, because until 1970 it was included in their diet. Traveling around the countries, they shared its recipe on land, and it soon became a popular drink. This is a strong alcoholic cocktail made with rum, and in modern versions with whiskey, vodka and cognac. It has been modernized so many times that classic grog is difficult to find in cafes and restaurants. It’s better to cook it yourself, because it’s easy and doesn’t take much time.

Grog: recipe

Grog appeared in 1740 thanks to Edward Vernon, who was then admiral of the British fleet and only after 1970 ceased to be part of the daily diet of British sailors.
The admiral could not prohibit the sailors from drinking alcohol, but he also could not tolerate drunkenness. He began diluting their 80 percent rum with water, to which sugar, spices and lemon juice were eventually added (to prevent scurvy and colds). It was the medicinal properties of the invented drink that prevented the sailors from tearing Vernon to pieces for weak alcohol.

The grog received its name in honor of the admiral’s waterproof cape - his constant companion, which in English was called “grogram cloak”.

The strength of grog ranges from 15 to 27%, and it is almost always drunk hot.

Effect on the body:

Alcohol, turned into a medicine two and a half centuries ago, is still popular today. After all, over the years, grog has not lost its medicinal properties. It warms and protects the body from infections, gives strength and calms the nerves. Being an excellent alternative to mulled wine and punch, grog lifts your spirits and protects against colds. Especially gloomy autumn and cold winter.

You can't drink grog:

  • in large quantities (no more than 200 ml at a time)
  • with a tendency to alcoholism and binge drinking with metabolic disorders and endocrine diseases (diabetes mellitus, obesity, gout, rickets, etc.)
  • for liver and kidney diseases

Types of grog:

Not every drink can boast such variability as grog. The thing is that a number of factors contribute to this.

Firstly, the alcoholic base of grog can be not only rum, but also cognac, brandy, and whiskey. It is recommended to use dark rum, but gold and even white are quite suitable. There are recipes for the drink even based on vodka and even absinthe. In addition, there is grog and no alcohol at all.

Secondly, the classic recipe consists of only three components: rum, water and sugar. But additives such as honey (instead of sugar), tea or coffee (instead of water), spices, citrus juice or liqueur are a matter of taste. They allow you to create a recipe for everyone.

As for spices, you can use various compositions of cloves, pepper, star anise, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.

It is worth remembering that every tea and coffee is a new version of grog. This way you can create, for example, coffee grog. And this does not take into account the fact that some people add milk, cream, chicken eggs and dried fruit to the drink.

Just pay attention to the fact that when preparing grog at home, the optimal proportion of alcohol (rum, cognac, etc.) and the water part (water, tea, coffee) will be 1:3. This means you can reduce or increase the amount of alcohol in recipes to create the optimal balance.

Having made sure that the composition of the grog depends on the flight of fancy and the aspirations of the soul, you can move on to the main part.

"Children's" grog

Despite the fact that grog was initially prepared only with rum, non-alcoholic versions also appeared. After all, not only adult men want to stay warm on a cool evening, but also children and pregnant women. For them, unlike the classic grog recipe, our non-alcoholic grog made with milk is suitable.

Required Ingredients

To prepare “light” grog you will need:

  • Cow's milk - 1.5 cups (300 milliliters);
  • Honey – 3 teaspoons;
  • Water – 1 glass (200 milliliters);
  • Tea (hibiscus or rooibos is best) – 2 teaspoons (dry);
  • Allspice (peas) – 2 pieces;
  • Anise (star anise) – 1 star;
  • Cloves – 2 buds;
  • Vanillin – a pinch.

By the way, grog in this design will not only warm the child, but is also beneficial for his immunity and health in general.

“Children’s” grog: step-by-step recipe for preparation

Cooking process

Preparing non-alcoholic grog is also simple and quick:

  1. First, pour all the seasonings (pepper, star anise, cloves, vanillin) into a small saucepan, fill them with milk and water, and then put them on the stove.
  2. As soon as the contents of the pan boil, pour the tea leaves into it. Cook in this composition for 4.5–5 minutes.
  3. Then turn off the stove and cover the pan with a lid. In this position, let the grog infuse for a quarter of an hour.
  4. Next (after 15 minutes), pass the drink through a strainer and add honey to it.
  5. Stir well and pour into glasses or cups.

Children and parents will be delighted with this warming drink. If adults are haunted by the classic grog recipe, then you can add a little rum to this one.

How and with what to drink grog?

Drink this drink hot (but slightly infused), in small sips or through a straw, savoring and enjoying. It requires thick-walled dishes made of glass, porcelain or clay (to retain heat longer).

Most often, the drink is served with pastries, dried fruits, chocolates, pancakes or pancakes. But he is good on his own. And many people love it just like that, in its pure form, without any snacks. There are various ways to prepare grog:

  1. Boiling. All components, including alcohol and spices, are boiled in water for 2-3 minutes, infused and poured into a cup.
  2. Brewing. Initially, tea or coffee with spices or herbs is brewed in a large teapot, where after 5 minutes lemon juice, sugar or honey and alcohol are added.

Using these methods you can prepare exclusive grog, just yours. And our recipes will serve as the basis for choosing components.

Grog "Classic"

Prepare:

  • rum (dark or amber) – 200 ml
  • water (boiled) – 400 ml
  • lemons – 2 units.
  • sugar – 4 teaspoons

You need to prepare it like this:

  1. Squeeze the juice out of the lemons.
  2. Boil water and, reducing the heat, pour alcohol, juice and sugar into it.
  3. In 2-3 minutes of continuous stirring, the sugar will dissolve and the drink can be poured into cups.
  4. Boil the homemade grog for 2-3 minutes until the sugar is completely dissolved, stirring it with a kitchen spatula.

Try to prepare the same recipe, but replace the rum with cognac (or use white rum), sugar with honey (in the amount of 1-2 tablespoons), and water with tea and add 2 buds of cloves and 1 stick of cinnamon (or other spices as desired). They need to be immersed in water after it boils along with other components. At the end, this drink needs to be strained. Spices can be added without boiling - but only before bottling. But then there is no need to filter the drink. By the way, it is quite appropriate to put a slice of orange and lemon into a cup of grog.

Coffee grog

  • rum (Jamaican) – 40 ml
  • cognac – 30 ml
  • coffee (freshly brewed) – 240 ml
  • water (boiled) – 50 ml
  • sugar – 1 tablespoon
  • lemon – 1 unit (for decoration)

You need to prepare it like this:

  1. Sugar must be completely dissolved in water
  2. Pour rum and cognac into hot coffee, sugar syrup and pour into cups. Garnish with a slice of lemon.

Try making coffee grog according to this recipe, replacing rum and cognac with red port (70 ml), and granulated sugar with condensed milk. Or add cinnamon (or allspice, cloves, nutmeg, anise, dried or fresh lemon and orange peels, etc.) to the composition. The amount of spices for grog is calculated from the amount of ¼ teaspoon per 3 glasses of coffee.

Homemade grog - classic and alternative drink recipes

Until 1970, grog was included in the daily diet of sailors in the British Navy, which made the drink recognizable throughout the world. I propose to consider the recipe for a classic grog and the best alternative option with spices, honey and fruit. Cooking does not take much time.

Grog is an alcoholic drink with a strength of 15-20%, made by mixing rum with water and sugar in certain proportions. In some variations, in addition to the above-mentioned ingredients, the composition includes lemon juice and spices (cloves, ginger, cinnamon, mint). Grog is served hot. For centuries, it was used by sailors from different countries as a means to prevent scurvy. In terms of its warming properties, grog is similar to mulled wine (hot wine).

Historical reference. Grog appeared thanks to the admiral of the British fleet Edward Vernon (1684-1757), whom sailors called Old Grog for his habit of walking in a waterproof cape (English name grogram cloak). Due to constant drunkenness, the admiral ordered the daily portion of rum to be diluted with water (fleet employees in those days were given about 240 ml of rum with a strength of 80 degrees). Over time, sugar and lemon juice were added to the composition to improve the taste.

Grog: classic alcoholic recipe. Cooking tips.

A sailor from the British Navy received about 280 ml of rum daily as a preventive measure against various diseases, so grog is not only a tasty, but also a healthy drink. It lasted longer than fresh water and prevented intestinal diseases. However, he cannot be called noble, because grog was first brewed due to the fact that drinking rum every day encouraged sailors to get drunk. It was decided to serve it only diluted with water and lemon juice, and this innovation soon caught on.

Experts offer some cooking tips:

  • Instead of the usual boiling of the components of the drink, cook it in a water bath. The grog will take longer to cook, but the sauna is used to adapt the ingredients to the high temperatures. It will also be easy to ensure that it does not heat up beyond the permissible limit.
  • In hot drinks, dark rum is preferred, usually Bacardi or Jamaican. It is stronger and is aged in oak barrels for at least 3 years. Light varieties are used less frequently, usually for making grog with the addition of berries or fruits.
  • It is better to sweeten the drink with brown cane sugar or caramel crumbs. Instead of sugar, use honey, syrup or liqueur. Remember that honey cannot be added to a boiling mixture, otherwise it will lose all its beneficial and tasteful qualities.
  • It is better to use spices in their entirety, so the taste of the drink will be brighter, and the aroma will not be so rich, but persistent. Ground spices are also used, but before use you need to strain the drink through a fine strainer or cheesecloth.
  • The difference between grog and some other drinks is that it needs to sit for about 15 minutes so that the spices release all their beneficial properties and you feel the real flavor bouquet.
  • It is not consumed cold because it resembles regular tea. But you shouldn’t heat it too much. Serve the grog hot at 70°C.

photo from mdformulated.com

  • The ratio of alcohol to water does not change depending on whether you use vodka or cognac. The non-alcoholic base should predominate in the drink. The traditional proportion is ¼, but it can be stronger, up to a 1:1 ratio.
  • Before cooking, you need to boil the water and let it cool to 70°C. Do you make grog with tea? Brew it so that it is strong, otherwise you will not feel the presence of tea in the drink. The traditional version was black, but you can experiment with green, white or rooibos tea.
  • There are separate recipes where alcohol needs to be boiled and cooked for about 3-5 minutes, while some of the ethanol will evaporate and the strength of the drink will be less. When the recipe does not indicate this, you should not do this.
  • Use only one type of alcohol in grog; you should not mix them together. This way you will avoid troubles in the form of nausea and weakness in the morning.
  • At your discretion, you can add fruits, juices, citrus fruits and even milk to it. Some recipes add an egg.
  • Like all hot drinks, it is best served in preheated glasses to prevent it from getting cold too quickly.

Add alcohol when everything is almost ready. It is not recommended to boil strong drinks, since ethyl alcohol evaporates at temperatures above 78⁰C. If you adhere to the technology, essential oils and degrees will not disappear along with their beneficial properties.

Classic grog recipe

  • dark rum – 200 ml (Jamaican or Bacardi is best);
  • boiled water – 400 ml;
  • lemon – 2 pieces;
  • sugar – 4 teaspoons.

1. Pour water into a saucepan and bring to a boil.

2. Separately squeeze the juice from two lemons.

3. Reduce heat, pour rum into the water in a thin stream, then add lemon juice and sugar, mix well.

4. Boil the homemade grog for 2-3 minutes until the sugar is completely dissolved, stirring with a kitchen spatula.

5. Remove the drink from the stove and pour into glasses.

Grog should only be drunk hot, in slow sips (possibly through a straw), so as not to burn your throat.

Classic homemade grog

How to brew Grog using wine

It's no secret that a variety of alcoholic drinks are often prepared based on wine. Grog was no exception. For preparation you will need:

  • cardamom grains - 4 pcs.;
  • cinnamon sticks - ½ pcs.;
  • red wine - 0.4 l;
  • lemon - 80 g;
  • nutmeg - 1 pinch;
  • ginger root - 5-7 g.

Cooking process:

  1. Thinly slice the lemon and ginger and place them in the pan.
  2. Add all the other ingredients and quickly bring to a boil.
  3. Cover with a lid, reduce heat to low and cook for another 7 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and leave for about half an hour.
  5. Strain and serve immediately.

Reference! The amount of sugar should be adjusted to your taste. For sweet and semi-sweet wines, its amount can be reduced, but when choosing a dry alcoholic product, on the contrary, it can be increased.

Alternative recipe for homemade grog

Unlike the classic version, spices are used to improve the taste.

  • dark rum (cognac) – 60 ml;
  • lemon juice – 40 ml;
  • hot water (tea) – 60 ml;
  • sugar – 1 teaspoon;
  • cloves – 2 buds;
  • cinnamon – 1 stick.

Rum can be replaced with cognac, and water with hot black tea. The authors of some recipes add fresh mint, but it suppresses the taste of the alcoholic base, so I don’t use it.

The cooking technology is no different from the previous version; spices (cinnamon and cloves) are added at the very end before pouring into glasses. You can also add a tablespoon of liquid honey and a few slices of fruit, such as oranges or lemons, to the finished drink. More details in the video.

Egg grog recipe

Another unusual hot cocktail with rum. The recipe uses only the yolk of the egg, as the white will curdle in a hot drink. If you don't want to throw away the egg whites, use them to make gingerbread icing. This way you will have real Christmas gatherings.

  • Dark rum – 80 ml;
  • Egg yolk – 1 pc.;
  • Freshly brewed black tea – 250 ml;
  • Honey – 1 teaspoon;
  • Lemon - a couple of slices;
  • Almond syrup – 1 teaspoon;
  • Cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla sugar - to taste.

Pour tea into a saucepan, add cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon. Bring everything to a boil and leave on the stove for a few minutes so that the essential oils release their aroma. Then add honey and stir it. In a separate bowl, beat the yolk with vanilla sugar until foamy and pour it into a saucepan with the rest of the ingredients. Be sure to bring the mixture to a boil. Pour the finished grog into glasses for hot drinks, discarding the lemon pieces along the way, add almond syrup and rum. The cocktail can be topped with whipped cream or almond petals.

How to make delicious grog

The universal technology for preparing the drink is as follows:

  1. Determine the ratio of alcoholic and non-alcoholic liquids (usually it ranges from 1:1 to 1:3).
  2. Select additional components (in this case, you can use both generally accepted proportions and personal preferences).
  3. Bring non-alcoholic liquid to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat, then add sugar and accompanying ingredients.
  5. Pour in alcohol in a thin stream.
  6. Keep the result on the fire for a couple of minutes until the sugar is completely dissolved (to speed up the process, the liquid should be constantly stirred with a wooden spoon).
  7. Pour the drink into glasses.

Grog with wine: recipe

  • cinnamon - half a stick

With wine
Technology for preparing grog:

  1. Cut the lemon into slices, peel the ginger and also cut into slices.
  2. Place all the ingredients in a saucepan of a suitable size and place it on low heat.
  3. Bring to a boil, but under no circumstances let the mixture boil.
  4. Cook for 6 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Remove from heat, cover and leave for another 15 minutes.
  6. Strain the drink through a sieve and pour into glasses.

What is grog

Grog in its classic form is a hot alcoholic drink whose strength ranges between 15 and 20 degrees.

Any correct grog recipe requires boiling all its ingredients. Otherwise, you'll just end up with a grog-shaped cocktail.

The basic composition of the drink includes water, rum (mostly dark), sugar and lemon juice.

At the same time, various modifications and additions to the original version are allowed. For example, replacing sugar with honey, we get honey grog.

It is also possible to replace plain boiling water with black or green tea, coffee, juices and even milk. In addition, you can diversify the drink by adding various berries or fruits to it.

When replacing the alcoholic base, such apocryphal drinks as cognac grog or whiskey grog are obtained.

Finally, many lovers of the mentioned drink willingly add various spices to it: cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, mint, ginger, etc.

Making grog at home: ingredients, technology, recommendations

The basis or base of grog is rum, but in the modern world it can be another alcoholic drink whose strength is forty degrees or higher. For example, vodka, cognac, whiskey, scotch, bourbon, etc. It would seem that there’s nothing complicated about it, just mix alcohol with water and the drink is ready, but that’s not the case. What are the benefits of English grog?

Many years have passed since the British fleet actually made “weather” in the vastness of the five oceans, and the technology for making rum has become much more advanced. Its taste has become softer and its smell more pleasant, so grog has become quite widespread throughout the world. A wide variety of components began to be added to it, which turn the drink into a real warming nectar that can not only give pleasure, but also protect against colds in the dank and cold autumn or winter. Its usefulness directly depends on what ingredients are present in the grog drink. For example, by making grog with lemon, rich in vitamin C and other microelements, sailors successfully saved themselves from scurvy, which mercilessly decimated their ranks during long voyages.

  • High-quality grog can calm nervous breakdowns, relieve stress, give confidence and inspire optimism. For long-term depression, doctors prescribe grog three times a day, 15-45 grams.

What is grog and its origin story

Grog (note: not grok - this is what this drink is sometimes called on the Internet) is a warming drink based on rum, black tea and sugar. However, initially it was a drink made from water and rum - the daily ration of a British sailor during the colonial era. It all started in 1655 when Vice Admiral William Penn (founder of Pennsylvania) captured Jamaica. Previously, each sailor, due to a lack of knowledge about long-term water storage, was given a gallon of beer (4.55 liters) per day. When the beer ran out (after all, the volumes were not small) or turned sour, the sailors drank stale water, which they diluted with the same beer or wine.

Origin story

Grog in its current form was actually invented by English sailors, somewhere in the middle of the 18th century. Swimming in the cold northern waters, they adopted the recipe for the familiar punch.

However, after pure cherry juice you will have to search for a long time because it would be unpleasant due to the high acidity of the cherries. The “juice” must be 100% fruit and must not contain any additives such as sugar. Therefore, the acidic fruit juice is mixed with sugar and water to make cherry nectar.

There is also no pure banana juice because bananas contain too little liquid and therefore must be mixed with water. According to legend, British sailors at that time also immediately invented the Gin Tonic, as they simply mixed a bitter to improve the taste with Gin.

But since there was no wine in the holds, but only strong rum and various vodkas and cognacs, then, without much fuss, they added water to them, generously sprinkled everything with sugar and spices, and brought them almost to a boil - well, to warm up.

Grog turned out to be so effective for the health and morale of sailors that at the beginning of the 19th century it was included in the daily diet of the British fleet for the period from October to May, and in the summer - if the temperature overboard dropped to +12 degrees. By the way, this drink was abolished for dinner every evening only in 1970.

English roots of grog

The tonic water that is available today does not contain as much quinine as tonic water. However, it has a slightly bitter taste that is perfect for cocktails and long shots like Florida, vodka tonic or drone limbo.

Sparkling lemonade is the perfect base for a variety of delicious cocktails. In addition to lemon juice or lime extract, bitter lemon contains sugars, flavors and carbonated water. As a tonic water, bitter lemon was also used by colonial forces for malarial apophylax, thanks to its ingredient quinine.

The naval authorities noticed that with regular use of grog, the sailors began to get sick much less, and scurvy almost disappeared. They figured that it was more profitable to load a couple of barrels of strong alcohol, a barrel of honey, a bag of sugar and spices than centners of vegetables that quickly rot. And the sailors liked this drink more than boiled cabbage.

Meanwhile, there is even a fruity version of bitter orange that contains orange juice instead of lemon juice. Syrups are used in cocktails as “modifiers,” meaning they define flavor and harmonize with the base. Fruit syrup is made by boiling fruit juices, mixing with sugar and cooking. Due to its high sugar content, it lasts very long, even unrefrigerated.

Raspberry syrup is mainly known for its use in whites. Cassis - blackcurrant syrup and the crown champagne of Kir Royal, Grenadine is made from pomegranate seeds and gives Tequila Sunrise its red color. Strawberry, passion fruit or linden syrup are also popular cocktail ingredients. Even more exotic are syrups made from cactus, roses or watermelon.

The official version of the appearance of grog sounds like this: once Admiral Edward Vernon, nicknamed Old Grog (because of the grogram cloak, which he never took off), inspected ships and saw that all the sailors were very drunk.

At that time, everyone was given 240 ml of pure 80-proof rum per day. He ordered to secretly dilute the rum with half and half tea, and so that it would not be felt, add spices to the drink and heat it up.

The current trend also features 5cm diameter ice balls, drinks for extra long-lasting cooling, or Japanese, with a knife of intricately carved ice diamonds. Fine crushed ice is usually made from cubes in a crusher and melts faster. It is used for cocktails in the Caribbean or as a base for frozen drinks. Our advice: the amount of ice needed for a cocktail should not be underestimated. Therefore, a few days before, practical ice bags already have cubes in stock!

In bars, the rule is that ice can only be used once. Ice cubes intended for mixing in a shaker or stirrer are removed during forging. Since they are already flavored, fresh ice cubes or crushed ice are again used to cool the drinks.

Making grog at home

The main ingredient is white rum, which is diluted with strong black tea. The classic proportion is ¼. In the modern interpretation, various spices are necessarily added to grog, in particular cloves, cardamom and cinnamon. Lemon and sugar to taste. Over time, tea was sometimes replaced by coffee, which is also grog. Rum can be replaced with cognac or whiskey. In America, grog is significantly inferior to Hot Buttered Rum, which fits perfectly into the Christmas picture and has a better warming effect.
