Mackerel under a fur coat - a classic recipe for puff salad

Our family loves salads. One of the most favorite is herring under a fur coat. We prepare it not only for holidays, but also on weekdays. But sometimes you want to add variety to the traditional menu and experience a new taste. This is where an incredibly tasty salad comes to the rescue - mackerel under a fur coat. In my opinion, it is even tastier than ordinary herring under a fur coat.

It can be made from either cold smoked mackerel or salted mackerel prepared according to a home recipe. Vegetables can be either baked in the oven or boiled. Let's look at all the intricacies of preparing this salad.

Green apple salad

This recipe for mackerel under a fur coat is interesting because the apple and onion are pickled. This gives the salad a piquant taste. To prepare you need to take:

  • One medium-sized smoked fish.
  • Large green apple.
  • A large onion, the juicier and sweeter the better.
  • Two small beets.
  • Two potatoes.
  • A couple of eggs.
  • Mayonnaise for dressing.

First you need to prepare the onion and apple. The latter is peeled, grated on a coarse grater and placed in a bowl. Peel the onion and cut into thin half rings. Here you need to add a little vinegar, a pinch of salt and sugar. It’s better to leave this mixture like this for about ten minutes so that it marinates.

Place chopped fish at the bottom of the mold. Mayonnaise is distributed on top. Cover the whole thing with a layer of grated boiled potatoes. A ready-made mixture of onions and apples is placed on it. It is also worth spreading with mayonnaise. Now it’s the turn of boiled eggs and carrots, grate them on a fine grater. And this layer should be coated with mayonnaise. Cover everything with boiled beets. Mayonnaise is again placed on top.

Recipe for cooking mackerel under a fur coat step by step

Mackerel under a fur coat, very tasty layered fish salad with vegetables. To prepare it, you need to wash and boil vegetables (potatoes, carrots and beets). Fill the vegetables with water and cook under a closed lid for 15 - 20 minutes, check the readiness by piercing the vegetables with a toothpick, usually potatoes and carrots cook faster than beets, so the beets need to be boiled a little longer. Boiled vegetables need to be cooled, peeled and grated. The mackerel needs to be cleaned, the insides removed and the head cut off, an incision made on the back, the fins removed and the skin removed. Separate the meat from the bone and remove small and large bones. Cut the meat into pieces. Thinly slice the onion into rings.

Place half of the chopped mackerel on the bottom of the dish, and put half of the onion on the fish. To make the onion softer and not so bitter, you can first pour boiling water over it and leave until the water cools, then drain the water.

Pour mayonnaise on top. Watering is always more convenient than spreading.

We lay out the potatoes in the next layer, you can add a little salt to the potatoes and also pour mayonnaise on them.

Next, salt the carrots a little, and pour plenty of mayonnaise on them.

Now we lay out the remaining mackerel and the remaining onion, and pour mayonnaise over this layer. Salads of this type “love” mayonnaise; if you don’t add enough mayonnaise, the salad will turn out a little dry.

And the last layer is beets, lay out the beets and pour mayonnaise generously and, using a spoon, carefully spread the mayonnaise over the entire surface.

It turned out to be a very tasty and quite filling salad.

Cooking steps

Boil beets, carrots and potatoes until cooked (ready vegetables will be easily pierced with a fork or knife), peel. Hard-boil the eggs (for 10 minutes), cool and peel. Clean the mackerel, remove the head, tail, entrails, and carefully remove all the bones. Grate the potatoes on a coarse grater, place them on the dish as the first layer, add a little salt and pepper.

Coat the potatoes with mayonnaise, place a second layer of mackerel cut into pieces and finely chopped peeled onions.

Grease this layer with mayonnaise, then add a layer of boiled carrots grated on a coarse grater + mayonnaise.

The next layer is grated boiled eggs, a little salt + mayonnaise.

Grate the boiled beets on a coarse grater and place in the salad as the last layer. It’s good to grease everything with mayonnaise. Let the salad soak for about 1 hour in a cool place, then decorate.

A very tasty salad “Mackerel under a fur coat” can be served at the festive table!

Bon appetit!

Herring under a fur coat with mackerel

Today I would like to offer you a recipe for the well-known herring salad, but it contains smoked mackerel and apple, which give a new taste and some zest to this everyone’s favorite salad.
To prepare herring under a fur coat with mackerel, you will need:

smoked mackerel – 1 pc. beets – 2 pcs. potatoes – 2 pcs. carrots – 1 pc. chicken eggs – 2 pcs. green apple – 1 pc. onion – 1 pc. mayonnaise - to taste

How to cook herring under a fur coat with mackerel:

1. Clean the mackerel, separate the fillets from the bones and skin and cut into pieces. 2. Wash the potatoes and carrots, put them in a saucepan, add water and put on the stove, boil the water and cook until tender. 3. Wash the beets and put them in another pan (so that they don’t stain the potatoes even through their “jackets”), add water and put on the stove, cook until tender. 4. When the vegetables are cooked, remove them from the water and place on a plate, cool, then peel. 5. You also need to boil the eggs: put them in a saucepan, add water, salt and put on fire, after the water boils, cook for 5-6 minutes, then drain the hot water from the eggs and pour cold water over them. 6. Peel the onion, wash it, cut it into half rings and soak for 5 minutes in cold water. 7. Grate the beets on a medium grater, grate the carrots on a fine grater, grate the potatoes on a fine grater, grate the eggs on a medium grater - all separately. 8. Wash and grate the apple so that the apple does not darken; you can sprinkle it with lemon juice. 9. Now take a deep round salad bowl, cover it with film and lay out layers. 10. Place half of the grated beets on the bottom of the dish and smooth it out, set the other half aside for now. Grease a layer of beets with mayonnaise. 11. Place a layer of grated eggs on the beets and coat with mayonnaise. 12. Place a layer of carrots on a layer of eggs, a layer of potatoes on the carrots, coat generously with mayonnaise. 13. Next, place a layer of grated apple, onion, strained from water, on top of the apple, and mackerel on top of the onion. 14. Coat a layer of mackerel with mayonnaise. 15

Next, take a large plate or dish, place it on top of a deep salad bowl with our salad and, holding this entire structure with your hands, carefully turn the salad onto a plate and carefully remove the salad bowl and film. Take the remaining beets and cover the sides of our salad, forming a dome, then carefully brush with mayonnaise

You can decorate the salad with herbs on top. The salad should be left to soak for half an hour and then served.

Enjoy your meal!

Note to the hostess

“After grating beets, it’s not always easy to wash your hands. Lemon juice can help with this. It washes beets off your hands well.”

Required Ingredients

  • 1 smoked mackerel (lightly salted);
  • 200 – 300 g beets (boiled);
  • 250 – 300 g potatoes (boiled);
  • 1 pickled cucumber;
  • 1 head of onion (red);
  • 3 tbsp. spoons of mayonnaise;
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil;
  • a pinch of salt + a pinch of sugar;
  • greenery.

How to cook mackerel under a fur coat:

First of all, prepare the vegetables. Boil potatoes and beets until fully cooked. For this type of salad, it is most convenient to boil vegetables the day before; they have time to cool completely before assembling. Peel the potatoes, chop them into small cubes with a knife or grate them on a coarse grater. Place the potatoes in a deep bowl.

Chop a medium-sized pickled cucumber into cubes the same size as potatoes and place in a cup.

Peel the smoked mackerel, cut off the head, tail and belly, carefully removing the entrails. Cut the mackerel along the ridge on both sides. Cut the finished fillet into small pieces.

Chop the red onion very finely with a knife. If you use regular onions, first scald the pieces with boiling water to get rid of bitterness. If desired, chopped onions can be pickled, it will turn out very tasty.

Place the onion in a cup with the remaining ingredients, season with mayonnaise, and stir. If desired, the salad can also be seasoned with ground black pepper or finely chopped sweet and sour apple can be added. Stir the salad until smooth, taste, and season more if necessary. Set aside.

Peel the boiled beets and chop them into very small pieces with a knife. Place the beets in a separate bowl, season with a pinch of sugar, salt, and add a spoon of vegetable oil. Stir.

Assemble the dish.

Immediately decide on which serving dish you will serve the salad. I have a rectangular flat plate. Place the main ingredients with the fish on a plate, smooth it out a little, shape it, trimming the edges with a wide knife. Using the same knife, divide the salad into several even grooves; with the wide side, make these grooves deeper.

Carefully fill the prepared grooves with beet cubes using a teaspoon.

Then, chop any fresh herbs (parsley, dill or green onion) finely with a knife and sprinkle on the grooves with the fish.

The smoked mackerel salad under a fur coat is ready and can be served immediately before the fresh herbs wilt. Look how bright, elegant and appetizing the salad turned out, I think it would be appropriate on any table.

Bon appetit!

How to cook herring under a mackerel coat

This recipe has only one difference from the traditional one - it does not contain herring, which was successfully replaced with another fish. The taste is simply incredible, delicate and refined.

You will need:

  • 2 potatoes;
  • 4 chicken eggs;
  • 1 carrot;
  • 2 beets;
  • 1 salted mackerel;
  • 1 onion;
  • 200 gr. mayonnaise;
  • 2 sprigs of parsley.

Preparing herring under a mackerel coat:

  1. Potatoes, beets and carrots are washed and boiled, then cooled and peeled. Then they are crushed using a grater.
  2. Boil the eggs, then cool, peel and grate them too. 1 egg should be left for decoration.
  3. The fish must be peeled and all the bones removed. Cut the resulting fillet into small pieces.
  4. The onion must be peeled and chopped very finely.
  5. Herring under a fur coat sequence of layers: potatoes, onions, mackerel, carrots, egg.
  6. All layers must be lubricated with mayonnaise.
  7. The standard finishing layer is beets.
  8. Garnish the appetizer with sprigs of washed herbs and pieces of egg.

Important! All products for this dish, except fish and onions, are chopped on a coarse grater. But if you want to make the salad more juicy, it is better to grate the ingredients finely.

Step-by-step recipe with photos

Prepare the “Fish under a fur coat” salad for Christmas or New Year’s table, but not with herring, as usual, but with mackerel. Salted or smoked mackerel is suitable for this; I used salted fish (it will also be very tasty with smoked fish). The salad turned out awesome, for lovers of the traditional “fur coat” you can’t think of a better interpretation! :) To make the salad look more elegant, it should be decorated, but this should be done just before serving, and before that the salad should sit in the refrigerator so that all layers are thoroughly soaked !

Before starting to prepare the salad, boil jacket potatoes, eggs, carrots, and beets. Also prepare salted or smoked mackerel, onions, mayonnaise, canned corn, salt, pepper and herbs.

Peel potatoes, eggs, carrots, beets, onions, remove fillets from mackerel. Let's start collecting the salad. We will make it in layers, so prepare the appropriate dish. The first layer is potatoes (coarse grater). Salt and pepper the potato layer, brush or pour mayonnaise.

The next two layers are onion (small cubes) and mackerel (medium cubes), then grease everything with mayonnaise again.

Next comes carrots (coarse grater), mayonnaise.

Cut out flowers from the egg white for decoration, place the remaining eggs on the salad in the next layer (coarse grater), mayonnaise.

The last layer is beets (coarse grater). Place beets on both the top and sides of the salad, coat with a thick layer of mayonnaise, and use a spoon to smooth out any unevenness so that the salad has the shape of a semi-oval or mound.

Place the salad in the refrigerator to steep and soak. This will take two hours. Before serving, decorate the Mackerel salad under a fur coat with flowers made from egg whites and canned corn (or pieces of boiled carrots), and parsley.

How to beautifully decorate a salad

As my mother taught: “Any dish should not only be tasty, but also beautiful and appetizing.” You can show your imagination and offer a unique salad design option, or you can use ideas that have already been implemented.

I offer a selection of such ideas. Hope you like them.

In addition to the suggested preparation options, you can make a layered salad with mackerel without beets, replacing the last layer with cheese or apples. It turns out very tasty too.

Try this option and compare it with the classic version. Perhaps you will like this one, and in the comments share which salad you liked best.
