Many of us love fast food, even though it is not entirely healthy. This tasty and quick snack on the go is now becoming more and more popular and accessible. More and more street tents are opening, the price tag is affordable and this is a great reason to chat with friends, have a snack and drink a cold bottle. But why buy from dubious places when you can cook it yourself at home. Friends, I welcome everyone and today we will cook a hot dog in pita bread.
It looks the same as shawarma, even the filling is very similar, only instead of the usual chicken, we will use sausage in this recipe. By the way, for those who are interested, I also leave the recipe for homemade chicken shawarma just in case.
In my student years, hot dogs were prepared only in the classic way, i.e. in a bun. The sauce used was mustard, mayonnaise and ketchup. It was necessary to warn the seller in advance what and how much to put. Now, reading the menu, you lose count of how many varieties have been invented. The fact is that you can use whatever your heart desires as a filling, and the sauce has been changed a little, so here’s a new taste.
For my hot dog in pita bread, I use the following ingredients:
- Pita
- Cucumber (fresh)
- Tomatoes
- Cabbage
- Potato
- Cheese
- Korean carrots
for the sauce:
- Sour cream
- Mayonnaise
- Garlic
- Greenery
- Spices - to taste
I deliberately did not indicate the number of ingredients, because you cook at home and for your loved ones, so add at your own discretion.

- First, let's prepare the sausages - grill them in the oven, in the microwave, or simply boil them in water. When they are cooked, set them aside and let them cool.
- We shred the Chinese cabbage or we can leave it in large leaves - as you prefer. In the latter case, the hot dog will be easier to bite - pieces of chopped greens will not fall out of it.
- We divide large leaves into 2-3 parts so that they are no longer than a sausage.
- Wash the tomato and cut into circles.
- Unroll the pita bread. If it seems too big, place two sausages on it at once or divide the sheet in half to make two servings of hot dogs.
- Place the sausage on one side, next to or on top 2-3 leaves of Chinese cabbage, several slices of tomatoes, pour everything with ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise or any of these if desired.
- We wrap the pita bread as usual with stuffed pancakes - first we turn in the edges and then roll it up.
Now we can heat the hot dog in the microwave, in the oven on a baking sheet, or fry it in oil in a frying pan - this will make it crispy.

Addition to the lavash hot dog recipe
Even at home, there are many ingredients that can be used to make this simple snack more interesting.
Korean carrots and pickles
Both ingredients will be useful to anyone who loves spicy, juicy dishes. For 1 serving we will need a couple of pickled cucumbers cut lengthwise and 2-3 tbsp. carrots.
They can be placed together or separately.
White cabbage, bell pepper, green salad
Lovers of fresh vegetables will certainly want to cook a hot dog in pita bread with the addition of juicy greens.
- Chop 100 g of white cabbage into 1 serving and squeeze it with salt and hands to release the juice.
- We also add ½ sweet pepper - cut it lengthwise into slices or season the appetizer with lettuce leaves.
Not only classic green is good, but also iceberg and arugula. There is no need to cut the salads - just rinse, dry and place directly on the sausage.

Fresh herbs, young radishes in season and green onions will be no less tasty here.
Ginger and wasabi
It would seem that ingredients that are completely unsuitable for sausages actually go perfectly with them! Wasabi is an excellent substitute for mustard, the main thing is not to overdo it, add a little less than 1 teaspoon of it per serving, greasing the pita bread under the sausage.
You will need 2-3 leaves of pickled ginger - lay them out before rolling the hot dog.
You can combine this oriental version with Korean carrots, the main thing is not to choose too spicy ones and with fresh cucumbers.
We grate them on a coarse grater to make a light salad or cut them into quarters lengthwise.
Cheese and mushrooms
Well, for those who are going to fry their hot dog or bake it in the oven, the option with cheese and mushrooms is perfect - this will make the food unusually aromatic and satisfying.
- We cut the cheese into long bars 5cm by 1cm - a couple of these will be enough for one serving. And fry the mushrooms in oil and add them immediately after the sausage.
In this case, wrap the hot dog especially carefully so that the pita bread does not tear. . As you can see, there are a huge number of cooking options even for such a seemingly simple dish as a hot dog in pita bread.
Try making it at home, friends, post your additions to the recipes and, of course, photos of the finished snacks!

Features of shawarma with sausages in lavash
Shawarma with sausages is a budget and quick snack .
Suitable for cases when you don’t have time to spend a long time fiddling around with cooking meat. It differs from classic shawarma in taste, as it is more reminiscent of a classic hot dog, which is why it got the name “sandwich in pita bread.”
It’s very quick to prepare, because all you have to do is boil the sausages, make a vegetable mix and roll everything into pita bread. Everything is simple, not like in classic shawarma, where you have to figure out how to make the meat juicier, softer and more flavorful.
Shawarma is also cooked in pita - this is a flatbread that can be prepared at home (find the recipe here).

How to cook a hot dog in pita bread
Cooking sausages.
It all depends on how many hot dogs you eat at a time.
For myself, I make 2 - 3 pieces at a time.
This takes three sausages.
I usually take Hanoverian ones.
After the sausages boil, you need to boil them for another 5 minutes.
Then cool under running cold water.
We remove the film from them.
While the sausages were cooking, we prepared the rest so that it would be easier to cook later.
Take a large flat plate and two tablespoons.
We leave it on the table.
You will need all this soon.
We take out one layer of pita bread from the bag.
It tears easily by hand.
We tear it into three parts, but so that later it can be rolled up.
Lubricate the layer with mayonnaise.
For this we need a spoon.
It is necessary to coat the layer completely.
Then put the sausage, sprinkle grated cheese and Korean carrots on top, and pour ketchup on it.
While the hot dog is being cooked, dry the frying pan over high heat.
Before pouring ketchup on the hot dog, throw 1/4 stick of butter into a hot frying pan.
Spread the piece over the pan.
Quickly, before the butter has completely melted, roll up the pita bread into an envelope and place it in the frying pan.
Fry the hot dog over high heat for a minute or two.
As soon as the pita bread is browned, turn it over to the other side.
Just a minute.
And you can already get it.
Best eaten slightly hot.
They won't taste good cold.
That's all.
Bon appetit.
I believe in you! You will succeed. And I will try to cook. I really want to cook something new.
Cooking process
I suggest you prepare a hearty appetizer in pita bread with sausage and stewed cabbage. This dish can be eaten on its own; even one serving is enough to make you feel full. Alternatively, you can prepare it in the evening, and the next day take it with you to work and heat it up there, but even when cold, the snack turns out delicious, and with hot tea or coffee it’s just what you need!
You can stew or fry the cabbage according to your favorite method, the main thing is that there is not a lot of liquid left, otherwise it will leak out, which is not very comfortable.
To prepare sausage in pita bread with stewed cabbage and cheese, prepare the necessary ingredients from the list.
First of all, chop the cabbage and simmer it in a frying pan, adding tomato sauce and spices. Let the cabbage cool by half.
Cut the lavash sheet into pieces so that you can wrap the sausage and cabbage. I cut each sheet into two pieces, but since pita bread comes in different lengths and widths, use whatever you have. The sausages can be pre-cooked or lightly fried until golden brown, it will be tastier. Place a small layer of cabbage on a sheet of lavash, put sausage on top, sprinkle with grated cheese. The cheese is needed to hold the filling together.
Fold in the sides first.
Then wrap the entire contents in a roll.
Heat a grill pan well, grease with vegetable oil, place the rolls and bake for 5-7 minutes on each side. If desired, you can bake it in the oven.
