A little history
Oats are considered one of the most unpretentious plants, thereby gaining fame in European countries, North and South America, China and Mongolia. Oats grow in a wide variety of natural conditions, so for a long time they formed the basis of a nutritious diet in countries with harsh climates. It was valued much more than wheat, which was less resilient and too tender to survive in such weather. Some northern provinces of China and Mongolia are considered the forefathers of oat cultivation. It appeared in European latitudes much later than other cereal crops, but immediately won the hearts of consumers due to its healing and taste qualities. This is evidenced by the fact that even healers of Ancient Greece repeatedly used this cereal for medicinal purposes.

According to historians, the people of Great Britain were the first to think of making bread from oatmeal. This is precisely what ancient English chronicles from the end of the 8th century testify to. They talked about amazing oatmeal cakes and described the recipe for making them. Since then, for many years, these scones, along with the famous oatmeal, formed the basis of the diet of the inhabitants of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Today, oat bread is used as food by people all over the world. It is popular due to its nutritional composition, which allows you to saturate the body with vigor and energy, and also because of its healing properties. Oatmeal bread is made from three types of flour: wheat, oat and rye. Which makes it even tastier and healthier. And when prepared at home, such a product will be simply indispensable for feeding the whole family.
Recipes for the piggy bank
Of the things that can be added to the dough during the bread making process, the inclusion of other types of flour plays an active role. The reason is that pure oatmeal dough, due to the weak gluten that is formed during the soaking and fermentation process, does not give fluffiness when baked and does not properly bind the composition. It turns out heavier, so the dough takes longer to rise. Sometimes the finished product may taste bitter. To avoid undesirable moments, it should be noted that the dough should contain no more than a third of oatmeal from the total amount of flour ingredient. The correct ratio of components will make it possible to prepare aromatic, fluffy bread with a crispy crust.
We offer a recipe for classic yeast bread made from oatmeal:
- Mix 100 g oat flour, 500 g wheat flour, add 10 g dry yeast, 2 tbsp. l. granulated sugar.
- Pour the contents in small portions of 600-650 ml of boiled, slightly warm water. Mix. Leave in a warm, draft-free place, covered with a napkin.
- As soon as the yeast starts working, bubbles appear. The time depends on the quality of the yeast.
- Add 250 g of wheat and 150 g of oat flour, 2 tbsp. l. vegetable oil, 1 tbsp. l. salt.
- Mix the dough well. It should not stick to your hands.
- Place the formed loaf on a baking sheet greased with vegetable oil. Proofing time depends on how much the dough has risen. As soon as the shape has increased by half, it can be greased with egg yolk beaten with milk. Sprinkle with seed kernels. Bake in an oven preheated to 200 degrees. Baking time – 30 minutes. But it’s better to focus on time according to your type of oven and the golden brown crust.
- Tip: as soon as the baking sheet is in the oven, you need to spray the bottom with water from a spray bottle and close it. The steam will do its job - the crust will be excellent.

Harm of oat bread
Many people believe that eating bread inevitably leads to weight gain. But it is not so. Extra pounds depend largely on how much product we eat. For a healthy adult, the daily norm is 300-350 grams of bread. If you stick to this amount, then there is definitely no risk of weight gain. Also, undoubtedly, what you eat with bread also influences your weight gain. After all, it is often used as a basis for sandwiches with butter, sausage or pate, which themselves are fatty and high-calorie foods. If you do not get carried away with excessive consumption of oat bread, then it will not cause any harm to the body.

Use in cooking
Oatmeal bread is great to eat with a variety of vegetables. Fried and baked types of vegetables will also be good. Bread is most commonly used with soups, various first courses, as well as with a variety of dairy products. You can also use it as a base for sandwiches, and also eat boiled beef or turkey with it. Fatty meats in combination with this product can cause excessive secretion of gastric juice, which in turn will lead to heartburn and a burning sensation in the stomach.
Description of preparation:
This bread is ideal for a hearty and healthy breakfast: it is slightly sweet, soft and tender, just what you need for sandwiches and toast. I also like it with soups, especially in the summer, with okroshka. Try this simple recipe for oatmeal bread in a bread machine - I’m sure you won’t regret it! Take the butter out of the refrigerator early so that it melts a little. Sift flour - both wheat and oatmeal - into the bowl of a bread machine, pour in yeast, salt and mix. Pour in yogurt or kefir, water, add honey and softened butter. Turn on the bread machine to knead the dough. After the beep sounds about its completion, let the dough rest for half an hour. Brush the surface of the loaf with water or yolk and sprinkle with oatmeal. We choose the color and thickness of the crust, turn on the “Basic” mode and wander around the house, inhaling the stunning bread aroma and swallowing saliva. Place the finished loaf on a wire rack and cover with a towel. After 20 minutes you can eat the bread, but, to be honest, by this time half the loaf has already been “plucked off”. So be careful!

Making oat bread at home
Nowadays, when technological progress has stepped far forward, baking bread is easier than ever. Especially if you use modern devices such as a bread machine or multicooker for baking.
To make oat bread you will need:
- milk – 280 grams;
- vegetable oil – 1 tablespoon;
- sugar – 2 tablespoons;
- salt – 1.5 teaspoons
- wheat flour – 250 grams;
- oatmeal – 100 grams;
- oatmeal – 50 grams;
- dry baker's yeast - 1.5 teaspoons.
Pour warm milk, vegetable oil, salt and sugar into the bread machine container. Then add the sifted flour. To achieve the best result, it is recommended to mix two types of flour before falling asleep. Add oatmeal there too. Make a small well in the flour and pour in the required amount of yeast. Select the “Basic” mode for the bread machine. Approximate baking time is about three and a half hours. Crust color is medium. When kneading the dough, you need to monitor the formation of the mass and, if necessary, add wheat flour. After the end of the program, carefully remove the hot, freshly baked bread, cool and serve.
The same recipe can be used to prepare delicious oatmeal bread in a slow cooker and in the oven. To do this, you just need to knead the dough and then send it either to an oven preheated to 220 degrees, or put it in a multicooker on the “Baking” program for 2 hours.
Also, to bake delicious bread, rye flour or whole grain cereals are often added, as well as various additives that give the product a piquant and unique taste. These can be various seeds, grains, flakes, and so on. Those who have a sweet tooth can use honey when baking.
Step-by-step preparation
Step 1:
Required ingredients. Very important! Use the method of storing food that is indicated in the instructions for your bread machine! I have solids first, then liquid
Step 2:
Place dry yeast at the bottom of the bucket
Step 3:
Then oatmeal. If you don’t have it, don’t worry – grind the oatmeal in a blender or coffee grinder
Step 4:
Add wheat flour
Step 5:
Add salt
Step 6:
Sugar
Step 7:
Add oatmeal, leaving a little for sprinkling the top (optional)
Step 8:
Now it’s the liquid’s turn - add vegetable oil
Step 9:
Then kefir (yogurt or natural yogurt)
Step 10:
Add warm water
Step 11:
That's all! We set the “Bread” program, the size – “Medium” (mine is designed for 680 g) and the color of the crust. We calmly go about our business - the bread maker will do all the work for us!
Step 12:
After 5-10 minutes, we will still check the consistency of the dough - it should be in the form of a smooth, even kolobok, if the dough is runny and spreads on the bottom, add a little flour, and if, on the contrary, there is flour at the bottom and the dough is too tight, then add water. But if you follow the proportions indicated in the recipe, you will most likely get the same correct bun as mine.
Step 13:
Approximately 1.5 hours before the end of the program, lubricate the top with water
Step 14:
And sprinkle with cereal (this step, of course, is optional)
Step 15:
At the end of the program, our fragrant golden bread is ready, and although oatmeal itself is usually quite heavy, the bread has increased in size by about 3 times, just like regular bread. But thanks to the addition of oatmeal, it is now healthier!
Step 16:
Now you just need to be patient and wait until the bread cools down, because eating baked goods while hot is not recommended
Step 17:
Cut the cooled bread and taste it
Step 18:
Bon appetit!
How to eat bread correctly
The most important thing to remember is its compatibility with other products. For example, it is better to eat meat without bread at all, but any vegetables, on the contrary, will go well with various types of it. If you do not follow such simple rules in using this product, you can easily get quite unpleasant problems with the digestive system.
Moldy bread should not be eaten. Often the moldy area is cut off, thinking that this has eliminated the problem. But this is far from true, because at its core, mold is a fungal infection. Their imperceptible thin threads can penetrate quite far. And if such spores enter the human body, they can cause severe food poisoning, as well as lead to intractable diseases of the respiratory and circulatory system.
How to cook “Bread with rolled oats in a bread machine”
Prepare the necessary ingredients.
Rinse the Hercules well until the water runs clear. Pour boiling water over and leave.
As soon as the rolled oats swell and become warm, transfer them to the bread machine bucket. Add honey and salt to it.
Next, add flour, yeast, and vegetable oil. Transfer the bucket to the bread maker. Set the mode to “Basic”, the time is 3 hours 40 minutes.
Observe the kneading process. As soon as a lump of dough has formed that does not spread on the walls of the bucket, close the lid of the bread maker and do not open it until the bread is ready. If the dough is smeared, add a tablespoon of flour and 0.5 tbsp. vegetable oil.
After the beep, remove the bucket from the bread maker and remove the bread. Transfer to the board. Cool and serve.
