Rice porridge in a slow cooker

Cooking secrets

Any recipe for rice porridge in a slow cooker with milk, like any other recipe, for example, oatmeal, is quite simple.

But in order for the dish to turn out perfect, it is important to take into account some subtleties of preparation.

Moreover, it’s worth saying right away that everything here is individual - some people like thick sweet porridge, some like it liquid and completely without sugar, and some eat any kind, but exclusively with raisins.

Try this or that advice, experiment with proportions and additional products to find your own favorite option.

It is best to choose round rice for delicious rice porridge - it is more sticky. In principle , any rice will do, long-grain, brown, steamed and other varieties, but a hearty, aromatic porridge is obtained from round rice .

With full-fat milk, the dish turns out more tasty, but also high in calories. Whole milk is prone to “escaping” from the container, so it needs to be diluted slightly with water.

Condensed milk, beloved by many, is also used for cooking. Rice porridge with condensed milk is cooked as follows: condensed milk is added to boiling water 1:1 and stirred thoroughly, after which other products are added. At the same time, be careful with sugar - if the condensed milk already contains it, then there is no need to add it.

Very interesting dishes are made with coconut milk. It is diluted in the same way as condensed, the degree of sweetness is controlled to taste.

There is no need to stir the dish while cooking in a slow cooker.

Rules and features of cooking rice porridge in a slow cooker

Rice porridge, like any dish, has its own cooking rules. How to cook rice porridge in a slow cooker and how long to cook it depends on what type you want to get.

The usual proportions are one part rice to two parts liquid or a little less. This is how we get crumbly boiled cereal. If you increase the amount of milk or water, the porridge will become more viscous. How much milk is needed for thin porridge depends on understanding what consistency is suitable. If the porridge turns out thick during cooking, you can always add additional liquid.

Crumbly porridge on water will turn out better if you add a little oil - butter or vegetable - to the water. This way the grains will be separated from one another. In addition, the cereal must be thoroughly washed before cooking. You can add carrots to water porridge with oil; the rice will turn out to have a light golden hue, combining the beneficial properties of cereals, oil and carrots. Now the Lenten meal is ready.

Some multicooker models do not allow you to cook in small portions. But this will not be a minus for lovers of this healthy food. After all, rice porridge can be prepared not only with the addition of fruits and vegetables. It will also work well with meat, chicken and turkey.

Delayed start function

Delayed start - a function to delay the start of cooking, a very convenient thing.

The delay time is determined by the user using a timer.

This will allow you to get a ready-made hot dish at the right time.

In the morning you can have breakfast with hot porridge, putting the food from the evening in the bowl.

This option is available in almost all popular multicookers and pressure cookers - Bork, Mulinex, Polaris, Panasonic, Philips, Redmonod, Scarlet.

  • the user puts in food (necessarily chilled and fresh, so that the milk does not turn sour in the morning);
  • sets which program the dish will be prepared in (“Porridge”, “Milk porridge”, “Soup”, “Pilaf”, “Grains” and some other built-in programs);
  • selects the start time for the program to start. If breakfast is needed by 7 a.m., and the automatic program for preparing milk porridge is designed for 30 minutes, then the user sets the start time to 06:30.

Liquid or thick?

The consistency of rice porridge in a slow cooker with milk is determined by the proportions of cereal and liquid.

Viscous porridge is prepared from 1 part cereal and 3 parts liquid . In this case, it is advisable to dilute the milk in half with hot water.

very thick porridge is obtained in a 1:2 ratio of cereal and liquid. But first, it is advisable to boil the rice in water until half cooked, then drain the water and replace it with boiling milk. If you don't do this, the rice will simply burn.

Liquid rice porridge in a slow cooker with milk is cooked at a ratio of cereal to liquid of 1:4.

Rice porridge in a slow cooker recipe with milk

The multicooker became so widespread thanks to its excellent ability to cook rice and delicious cereals; it was later that it was “taught” all sorts of tricks.

Previously, I always cooked food in a good, high-quality Panasonic 18 multicooker with a power of 670 W, now I’m mastering the brand new Redmond. I want to say that the equipment from different manufacturers cooks differently, the reason for this is the technical characteristics. Therefore, in this recipe I give recommendations for preparing rice porridge for these two models, and I ask guests and regular readers to write in the comments how they prepare such milk porridge from rice in a Polaris, Philips, Mulinex, Scarlet, Unit or other models, as well as in a pressure cooker.

If for side dishes and pilaf they often give preference to long-grain and steamed rice, then for porridge it is better to choose cereals with round grains. Round rice is more starchy, and this is exactly what we need for the porridge to boil and become sticky. The most important thing in preparing porridge is to know the correct ratio of grains and liquid. And you also need to take into account your taste preferences, some people like thin porridge, some like it so that a spoon stands up. Therefore, I present several recipes with different proportions of rice and milk.

Why does porridge escape in a slow cooker?

I also often get asked the question, why did the milk porridge run away in the slow cooker? It seemed like it was cooked according to the recipe, but it still escaped through the valve.

One tip is to make a thick rim around the inside of the bowl with a piece of butter so that the milk slides along the walls when boiling and does not rush up and out.

Another tip is to insert a tray when cooking, which we use for steaming food. It helps, but not always.

It turns out that the reason for the “escape” of milk porridges is the fat content of the milk. And the manufacturer of the Redmond multicooker stated this in the recipe book and instructions for the multicooker. It is recommended to use 2.5% fat milk for milk porridges. I don’t entirely agree with this, because in my Panasonic I cook porridge with full-fat whole milk, I don’t even remove the cream from it, although I don’t add any butter in this case. I never use any headbands or containers, everything is fine. Therefore, without any second thoughts, I charged the first porridge in the new Redmond on a timer in the evening for breakfast, instead of first checking this process nearby. In the morning, a rather unpleasant surprise awaited me, and I had to stay on duty in the kitchen longer than usual (although the delicious porridge softened my anger a little).

How did I get out of this situation? Very simple, saved by the oil rim. Even with full-fat milk, the porridge behaves calmly. Perhaps someone will answer that they dilute the milk with water and then nothing escapes. There is only one way out: to try all the methods and at the same time be nearby in order to stop attempts at a “milk escape” in time. Just open the lid of the multicooker, stir the porridge and wait until the milk calms down. After all, almost all housewives know that milk usually runs away at the moment of boiling, then the foaming process ends.

How many grams of rice are in 1 multi glass?

Also, in porridge recipes, products are most often indicated not in grams and milliliters, but in multi-cups. What to do if the glass is lost and you need to cook porridge. As a rule, multicookers come with a 180 ml measuring cup (if you measure to the top).

  • It contains 165 g of rice,
  • buckwheat – 150 g,
  • semolina – 145 g,
  • oat flakes – 65 g.

How to make porridge tastier?

Rice milk porridge is delicious on its own, but if you eat it often, it can become boring.
By introducing new products into a standard recipe, you can get a variety of tastes and rich aromas.

All additives are usually introduced after boiling, since if introduced earlier they can provoke milk protein coagulation.

  • Rinse raisins, dried apricots, prunes with hot water, cut into pieces of the same size, place in melted butter and a little - about 3-5 minutes, warm over low heat or in a water bath. Then send it to the porridge a minute or two before the end of the cooking program;
  • fresh apples, pears and other fruits with dense, juicy pulp are added cut into pieces (it is better not to peel them, since the peel is rich in pectin and vitamins) 5-7 minutes before the end of the cooking program. Rice porridge with apples in a slow cooker is especially good if you add a little cinnamon;
  • with berries is a little different. Hard pits must be removed from cherries, sweet cherries and other fruits. It is also advisable to remove seeds from grapes. From currants and strawberries, carefully remove the “antennae” stalks. It is better to simply sprinkle the finished porridge with berries or their pieces before serving. It is not advisable to cook them - they give off a lot of juice and make the porridge too liquid and lose their bright taste;
  • It also tastes delicious with nuts . Large pieces of nuts are added 10 minutes before the end of cooking, and grated nuts are sprinkled on the finished dish. To enhance the nutty aroma, they can be lightly fried in a dry frying pan;
  • Even those who don’t really like it eat rice porridge with bananas ; children all like it. A couple of minutes before the end of the program, add banana puree or pieces of fruit and a pinch of finely ground nutmeg to the almost finished dish. If the bananas are very soft and ripe, then you don’t need to add sugar to the porridge, it will still be sweet;
  • pineapples - for exotic lovers . Pineapple cubes are mixed with honey, and when a little juice is released, they are added to the finished hot porridge.
  • from the orange and then sprinkled onto the porridge before serving for decoration. Then the juice is squeezed out, which is poured into the almost finished porridge a couple of minutes before the timer signal. Instead of fresh orange, it’s good to take ground candied orange peel or jam, for example, with rhubarb, the recipe for which is here;
  • honey is also added to the finished porridge , preferably buckwheat or another variety with a strong aroma. It is not advisable to boil the porridge after adding honey;
  • When it comes to spices , cinnamon, nutmeg, ground ginger, vanillin, lemon zest, toasted sesame seeds or shelled roasted sunflower seeds work well.

Note to housewives

To prevent the milk from “running away,” the walls of the multicooker bowl should be greased with butter.

The steam cooking pan that comes with the multicooker will also save you from this kind of trouble - just install it after loading all the ingredients and start the gadget.

If raisins and dates are placed in the bowl with rice, then they should also be washed.

If the dish is being prepared for children or elderly people who find it difficult to chew, then after cooking is complete, transfer it from the multicooker bowl to the blender bowl and beat

The cereal is placed in a bowl, butter and spices are added and poured with milk. Sometimes the milk is first brought to a boil, and then the dry ingredients are added.

Option 1: Classic rice porridge in a slow cooker on water

A recipe for simple rice porridge in a slow cooker, which is cooked in water. This dish is often used in the diet of people who are lactose intolerant or simply do not like milk. Often porridge is made as a base for the subsequent addition of nuts, fresh and dried fruits, jam, and honey.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp. rice;
  • 3 tbsp. water;
  • 30 grams of butter;
  • 0.5 tsp. salt;
  • 30 grams of sugar.

Cooking method

Sort the rice, remove spoiled grains. It is better to use round varieties; it is not necessary to take large grains; even chopped grains are suitable for porridge. Rinse thoroughly, change the water at least five times, and drain the last one. Pour the washed rice into the multicooker bowl.

Measure out the water. If you need thick porridge, you can reduce the amount to 2.5 glasses. For thinner options, increase to four cups. Pour measured water over the cereal.

Add salt. Without it, the taste of the porridge will be “empty”. Add sugar immediately. If you need a salty version, then exclude this ingredient or add a couple of pinches for taste.

Add the recipe oil to the bowl. During fasting, you can cook with the addition of vegetable fats, but reduce the amount to 15 ml.

Close the multicooker lid. Turn on the “Porridge” program and wait for the ready signal.

Stir the dish, put it into plates, and serve the porridge.

If the recipe is designed for a multicooker, use the cup from the device that comes with the kit to measure the products. This is what is indicated in all recipes, but you can simply adhere to the given proportions and measure the ingredients with a regular cup.
