Coffee frappe: recipes and tips for making it at home

What you need to know about frappe

It is believed that frappe was invented by a representative of the Nescafe company named Dimitris Vakondios in 1957 in Thessaloniki. In Greece, frappe is one of the most popular drinks and is available in almost all Greek cafes.

The word frappe comes from the French word frapper, which means to hit like crushed ice when mixed with a drink and shaken in a shaker. Frappe became the hallmark of post-war Greek coffee culture.

In itself, it is not exactly coffee. This is a type of thick cocktail that is served cold. You can add different syrups and ice cream to them. All components must be shaken with a shaker or mixer.

Drink properties:

  • The calorie content of frappe prepared according to the classic recipe does not exceed 2 kcal per serving. If 1 teaspoon of sugar is added to coffee, the calorie content increases to 20-22 kcal. Any additives - cream, milk - increase the calorie content of a serving.
  • The caffeine content in a cup of frappe ranges from approximately 60 to 120 mg, depending on the type of coffee beans.
  • has a pronounced coffee taste Instant coffee frappe may taste slightly sour.
  • Frappe coffee is often served as a cooling drink on hot days. The low temperature of coffee can slow down digestion, so you shouldn't drink it after meals. It's better to treat yourself to an iced coffee taste in between meals. Coffee reduces appetite, which is why it is loved by those who have to adhere to dietary restrictions.

Frappe is made on the basis of ordinary espresso, only crushed ice is added. The drink is low-calorie and suitable for those who are watching their figure. In hot weather it is an excellent thirst quencher due to its refreshing qualities. In winter it will be good with honey, chocolate or nuts.

Origin of the drink

The iced coffee cocktail in question is a relatively recent invention. For this reason, we know in detail not only the history of frappe, but also the date, place, and even the name of the creator.

The drink was first prepared by a Greek named Dimitrios Vakondios, who worked at one of the fair stands owned by Nestle. This happened in the summer of 1957 in hot Greek Thessaloniki.

Like many wonderful inventions, frappe was invented due to a coincidence. The enterprising young man's working day was long and the day was hot, so Dimitrios decided to cheer himself up with a portion of instant granulated coffee, which he loved very much. But, as luck would have it, there was no hot boiling water anywhere at the fair to brew the drink in the traditional way. But he had a shaker at his disposal, and the guy simply mixed coffee and sugar in it, pouring them with ordinary cold water.

In the process, the Greek got carried away with the preparation and added a few more ice cubes to the shaker. He really liked the finished result: the drink was cold and refreshing, invigorating, and at the same time did not seem strong in taste. In addition to these advantages, the whipped coffee was topped with high foam, giving the drink an attractive appearance.

This is how the traditional version of this cocktail appeared, which is prepared from instant coffee. After the popularization of the drink, other recipes appeared using natural ground Arabica and Robusta beans, for example, an exquisite mocha frappe.

On a note! Frappe, made from instant coffee, tastes slightly sour. Natural varieties give the drink noble nutty notes.

Where is frappe made?

Despite the fact that the cocktail was first prepared in Greece, it quickly spread throughout the world. It is especially popular in southern Europe, where the hot climate contributes to the popularity of soft drinks. In Cyprus, for example, frappe is considered a traditional delicacy - the islanders themselves are sure that no one in the world knows how to make this cocktail tastier than they do.

They drink frappe in Portugal, Spain, and Malta, and, of course, they love it in France. Moreover, in each country the cocktail is prepared a little differently, adding fruit or replacing milk with creamy ice cream.

On a note! Sometimes on the menu this cocktail is simply called: Greek coffee.

An integral feature of cocktails in all countries is such an ingredient as crushed - crushed or granulated - ice. In some places they use a special frappe ice maker to get it, in others they use a simple shaker. To make a cocktail at home, you can use an ordinary blender or even just break the ice with a rolling pin.

Happy birthday!

It is difficult to name at least a couple of popular drinks that have a specific birthday. Frappe coffee has it: October 7, 1957. The place of birth is also known: the country of Greece, the city of Thessaloniki, the International Trade Fair. It was here that representatives of the world famous company Nestle brought to present to the world their new product - cocoa soluble in cold milk. But that has nothing to do with it.

The birth of a new product, which later received the name “frappe,” as usual, was not without pain. The representative of the Swiss company Nestle, specializing in the production of instant drinks, was a lover of instant coffee. An employee devoted to his company’s products decided to drink coffee during the exhibition. He was not a barista, but was Greek by nationality.

Tormented by the inability to get hot water, the man poured the powder and sugar into a shaker, poured cold water over them and shook them. Apparently, he put his irritation and anger into this process, shaking the components in the shaker very intensively. The efforts were not in vain. Having opened the lid, the person was pretty surprised to see the luxurious dense foam. The resulting cocktail tasted wonderful. There was no talk then that this know-how would become a worldwide popular drink.

Frappe became noticed and appreciated thanks to the Greeks, who instantly understood the value of a tasty soft drink. In hot Greece, such cocktails are needed as a refreshing breath of cold air. The idea of adding ice to foamy coffee belongs to the residents of the Balkan Peninsula.

How the drink was discovered and where to put the emphasis

Its appearance happened by chance, as do many famous discoveries. International exhibition in Thessaloniki, 1957. A new Nestle product is being introduced - a children's chocolate drink whipped with milk. One of the employees really wanted to drink coffee. But since there was no hot water anywhere, he had to pour a packet of instant coffee into a cup of cold water and stir it for a long, long time. This is how Greece first learned about frappe coffee.

In a cafe or restaurant, when ordering frappe coffee, you can hear the emphasis on either the first or the second syllable. But, as a rule, the emphasis in foreign words depends on their country of origin. For example, in words of Italian origin the stress is on the first syllable, in French - on the last. And the word “frappe” came to us from the French language, which means that it is correct to put the emphasis on “E” - frappe.

Coffee story

There are legends about the appearance of this natural “energy drink”. The most common of these is associated with the shepherd Kaldim and the events that occurred in Ethiopia in 850. This is how this story sounds according to handwritten sources.

Kaldim drove his herd along picturesque mountain slopes with rich vegetation. Suddenly the shepherd began to notice that, after chewing the leaves of a wild plant, the goats became too vigorous and excited: they began to run, jump furiously, and butt. The young man was frightened and thought that the goats were poisoned, and their inappropriate behavior was a sign of their death throes.

After thinking a little, the shepherd decided to seek advice from the wise monks. He collected several coffee fruits and brought them to the monastery. After listening to the young man’s story, the monks decided that the devil had sent these fruits to earth and they should be burned immediately. The grains were thrown into the fire, and then a rich coffee aroma, hitherto unfamiliar to people, spread throughout the entire monastery.

Judging that such a smell was unlikely to be poison, the beans were quickly pulled out of the fire, crushed and poured with water, thus preparing the world's first coffee drink. The monks liked the black water, and the invigorating properties of the drug helped the ministers tirelessly stay awake during long night services. Later, the popular drink in monastic circles began to be prepared in nearby cities, from where the fame of coffee spread throughout the world.

This is how the legendary legend tells about the appearance of coffee. According to historical information, the Greeks owe the arrival of coffee to the Mediterranean region to the Turks. In Hellas, this drink became widespread precisely during the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The first coffee houses in Greece were Turkish, and their opening dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. At first, these establishments were visited only by Turks, but gradually representatives of the Greek nation began to be seen here more and more often.

In 1828, with the advent of independence, the first purely Greek coffee shop opened in Nafplion. Here visitors were offered not only to drink a cup of aromatic drink, but also to purchase ground or roasted coffee beans for making homemade Greek coffee. Later, specialized firms and shops appeared in Greece, importing and processing coffee products from different countries. And the drink became more and more popular every year.

Today, Greeks cannot imagine their life without a cup of aromatic coffee. This drink is consumed at every meeting, without paying attention to the time of day or the place of action. Any cafe will offer you several types of coffee drinks, and one of the most popular is the Frappe coffee recipe. This cool cocktail has become one of the symbols of tourist holidays in Greek resorts.

Difference between Frappe and Frappuccino

The Frappuccino was invented by a Starbucks barista. It is a cross between frappe and cappuccino. Although Frappuccinos and Frappes are both espresso-based and served cold, there are differences between them.

All components of a Frappuccino, including ice, must be whipped. This is the main fundamental difference.

When making a frappe, you can improvise and add almost any ingredients, but frappuccino, on the contrary, has a strict preparation standard invented by Starbucks. Its serving is 460 ml and necessarily contains doppio, sugar and chilled milk.

Where is frappe made?

The classic recipe can most often be found in the south of Europe - in Greece, sometimes in France or Spain, although there it is often called simply iced coffee. But in Cyprus you can taste the best frappe coffee in the world. So, at least, the Cypriots themselves say, sincerely considering the drink to be their national pride.

In the rest of Europe, the recipe has undergone significant modifications to suit local tastes. For the most part, it turned into a regular coffee shake with milk, syrup and crushed ice.

In Russian coffee shops you can encounter a wide variety of creative processing. So, before ordering a frappe coffee, be sure to find out what is hidden under this name in a particular coffee shop or bar. Sometimes frappe on the menu may be called Greek coffee.

What is added to the drink - interesting options

In addition to espresso, coffee contains small particles of ice, as well as various additional components:

  • honey;
  • cream;
  • fruits;
  • ice cream;
  • chocolate;
  • nuts, etc.

You can add spices, syrups, and alcoholic drinks to taste, varying the proportions based on personal preferences. Prepare the drink in a shaker, whipping it with a mixer or blender. The main thing is that you should get a stable foam, which is elegantly decorated as you choose.

An equally important condition for obtaining a real frappe is preparation immediately before use. You cannot mix the cocktail in advance, otherwise it will lose its “liveliness” and lose its taste.

There are a huge variety of recipes for making iced coffee cocktails. Let's look at the most interesting and simple ones.

  2. Low in calories, caffeine content is approximately equal to a standard shot of espresso.
  3. It invigorates and cools well.
  4. Can be consumed in the first half of the day, between meals.

Origin Greek, name French

In the cold coffee situation, Nestle and the Greeks “made” the Italians, who gave the world most of the coffee pleasures. Frappe was officially recognized as the national drink of Greece in 1979. But they named the drink in the French manner, because the word reflected the essence of its content. Translated from French, frappér means “to hit, pound”, as an option - chilled in crushed ice.

Note! The word frappé is French, which means the emphasis is on the last syllable. In France itself, the term frappe refers to cold drinks with crushed ice, regardless of the coffee content in them. These can be alcoholic, fruit cocktails with crushed ice.

There are no canons in the preparation of frappe, but its classic version is prepared exclusively from instant coffee, preferably granulated or powdered. This is due to the fact that it contains almost no oils; under such conditions, a strong foam is formed. Freeze-dried coffee is also suitable, but if there is no milk in the drink. Espresso can also be the base for a lush, cold brew.
