Simple recipes for making Frappuccino at home

Don't look for the name "Frappuccino" on the menus of restaurants and cafes. It is only available in the coffee cards of the Starbucks coffee shop chain. The owners of Starbucks have patented the sonorous name and are now its sole owners. The classic basis of a fluffy cold Frappuccino is three ingredients: coffee, milk, whipped cream, plus crushed ice. The name of the drink clearly contains two components of the name: frappe and cappuccino. There is no point in arguing which coffee is more beloved and popular; both are on the list of the most popular coffee cocktails in the world.

General concept of Frappuccino

This signature cocktail owes its name to two words: “frappe” and “cappuccino”. And if everything is clear with cappuccino (this is espresso with heated foamed milk), then the term “frappe” is familiar to only a few: it refers to a thick milkshake with ice cream and the obligatory addition of ice.

A must because frappe is translated from French as “chilled in crushed ice.”

The Frappuccino recipe was not developed by Starbucks. In 1992, The Coffee Connection owner George Howell was looking for ways to keep his summer sales going.

To do this, he flew to Seattle, where he became acquainted with the trend of local coffee shops creating iced drinks. Returning to Boston, the businessman tasked his marketing manager, Andrew Frank, with coming up with a new cocktail that would become a feature of The Coffee Connection, and he succeeded.

Frank took a frozen yogurt machine, put coffee, milk, sugar and ice in it to create a creamy drink. The manager gave him a name in the Italian style.

Thanks to this invention, George Howell was able to expand his chain to 23 locations and create a kind of coffee revolution in the habits of Boston.

But in 1994, Starbucks bought the business from Howell, and with it the rights to Frappuccino.

Interesting Facts:

  • after acquiring the rights to this one, I changed the recipe and started preparing it in a blender;
  • as of 2012, the company's revenue from sales of the drink amounted to $2 billion per year;
  • To avoid trademark infringement, coffee shops around the world produce and sell a similar product under other names: “Dankachino”, “Mokachino”, “Cappuccino Explosion”, etc.

How to Serve Dessert

The cocktail is served in glass glasses with a volume of 300-500 ml. They are pre-cooled in the freezer. The top surface is decorated with whipped cream. It would also be a good idea to top the drink with syrup. Be sure to place a straw in the dish.

Frappuccino has won the love of not only coffee lovers, but also those with a sweet tooth. This is an incredibly delicious cocktail. Anyone can prepare it. The main thing is to follow the instructions indicated in the recipe. Thanks to this, you will be able to achieve excellent results. It is quite possible that this dessert will become one of your favorites.

The history of iced coffee

It would be a mistake to say that iced coffee is a modern invention. Back in the 17th century. The Dutch poured freshly roasted aromatic grains with ice water and thus transported them around the world.

In the 19th century The French, who fought in the Algerian fortified city of Mazagran, began to add cool water to coffee instead of milk (it quickly spoiled in the heat), as well as lemon and cognac or brandy. This cocktail was called “Mazagran”.

Cold coffee gained mass popularity again in the 60s of the 20th century. In Japan, it was sold in cans in vending machines located on every corner.

According to one version, in 1957, at the International Fair in Thessaloniki, Greece, a Nestle campaign employee mixed instant coffee, sugar and ice water in a shaker. This is how the world's first frappe was born, which since 1979 has been considered the national drink of Greece and is known throughout the world.

Today frappe is both an independent drink and a way to serve cocktails regardless of the presence of coffee in them.

Company's mission

Today, Starbucks coffee shops can be found in 67 countries, and the total number of outlets already exceeds 22 thousand. The total number of network personnel is 140 thousand people.

Starbucks sells organic coffee, espresso-based drinks, a variety of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, coffee beans, tea, and accessories for preparing and serving coffee.

But company CEO Howard Schultz isn't talking about coffee.

This is one of the company's missions - to provide a comfortable place to relax. The most surprising thing is that the atmosphere of a coffee shop and its menu may differ depending on the country or even the city in which it is located:

  • American Starbucks may not have a caramel Frappuccino on its menu.
  • In Hong Kong you can buy freshly squeezed guava juice in branded bottles
  • Caramel syrup is missing from Canadian menus
  • In Vienna, visitors take off their shoes and climb up onto the sofas
  • In Germany there are pancakes on the menu
  • Dubai Starbucks is a real lounge-cafe where you can completely relax in chic leather chairs
  • In New York you can find yourself in a cafe with a completely businesslike atmosphere, where everyone is working on their laptop.
  • In Japan, Starbucks coffee shops can be found directly in bookstores

Despite the common attributes - Wi-Fi, green aprons, a table with spices, each Starbucks is a small, cozy world of good coffee lovers in its own way.

Today we will talk about unusual menu items that can only be tried in certain countries of the world. Go!

Properties and calorie content of the drink

Frappuccino has a general tonic effect on the body and increases performance due to the nutritional value of its ingredients. 1 serving of this dessert contains at least 400 kcal, so its consumption is considered a complete meal.

However, doctors do not recommend enjoying it more than once a day: from 60 to 150 g of caffeine in combination with cream, milk and sugar put a strain on the body.

The modern coffee industry provides a replacement for high-calorie ingredients: instead of cow's milk, for example, you can order a cocktail made with coconut and soy milk or remove sugar.

The drink is quite high in calories.

Cappuccino (or cappuccino)

leader in popularity among coffee drinks. Delicate and at the same time strong cappuccino is loved all over the world. Many people mistakenly believe that it is prepared with cream. In fact, it is a drink based on espresso and milk.

There are many legends about the origin of cappuccino. According to one version, Italian monks of the Capuchin Order began preparing this type of coffee. Like all Italians, the monks were very fond of coffee. But in those days, coffee was banned by the church and was considered the drink of the devil. The Capuchins came up with a trick: he announced that white foamed milk gave the devil's coffee softness and sweetness, thereby removing sin. The monks whipped the milk by hand for a long time to get a tasty and beautiful foam. Of course, they also brewed coffee by hand - many centuries remained before the invention of special machines.

A modern cappuccino is prepared like this: a third of the espresso is poured into a porcelain cup, then the same amount of hot milk is poured. The top third of the cup is filled with milk foam, whipped with hot steam. A teaspoon is always served with a cup of cappuccino - first they use it to eat milk foam, and then drink the coffee itself.

Main varieties

Since 2002, Starbucks has released a new Frappuccino every spring, matching flavors to the colors that hit the runway. And connoisseurs and regular customers of the coffee shop know how to get a special, secret cocktail (for example, inspired by the new “Joker”).

The variety of flavors is due to the use of toppings, syrups and other additives with which the dessert is prepared. However, there are 3 main types of Frappuccino (besides the classic one), which are in great demand among buyers.

Easy

It is prepared with skim milk and cream substitute with a minimum percentage of fat content, which reduces the calorie content of the drink by 54%, the fat content by 15%, and carbohydrates by 52%.

Cafein free

It is prepared according to a traditional recipe, the only difference is the use of a decaffeinated base.

Frappuccino cream

It is prepared without coffee, on a creamy base, which consists of sugar, thickening agents, flavorings and other ingredients. This is a dessert in its purest form - it resembles pudding due to the fact that the milk is foamed with a special cappuccino maker.

There are also 2 more types of cold cocktails:

  1. Vegetarian - for its preparation, dairy products are replaced with plant-based analogues.
  2. Tazoberi - Instead of espresso, Tazo tea is used as a base. Juices and fruit toppings are also added to the cocktail.

Starbucks in Russia

Starbucks came to Russia 8 years ago in September 2007. The first coffee shop of the chain appeared, of course, in the capital in a shopping mall. In December 2007, Starbucks opened its first location in St. Petersburg in the Piterland shopping center.

Today there are 100 coffee shops in Russia, of which 71 are located in Moscow, 11 in St. Petersburg.

Many of my friends don’t see the difference between coffee at McDonald’s and Starbucks, thinking that I’m simply overpaying for the brand by buying drinks there. I think otherwise; seasonal drinks are especially pleasing this winter - walnut-taffy and gingerbread lattes.

Frappuccino is recommended for people with hypotension, poor appetite, and migraines. The caffeine contained in the dessert has a positive effect on blood vessels and stimulates lung function.

The drink is contraindicated for hypertension, mild excitability, and a tendency to insomnia.

You should drink it carefully if you have a sore throat and refrain from eating dessert before donating blood (the test results may be distorted).

If a person is allergic to components or lactose intolerant, the ingredients can be replaced. The modern coffee industry allows the use of skim, lactose-free, soy or coconut milk.

How is it different from frappe?

Both of these drinks are considered refreshing, suitable for summer consumption and are based on espresso. But there is a difference between them. You can learn about the features of making espresso coffee here.

In the case of frappe, the manufacturer’s imagination is only welcome. And Frappuccino has been prepared strictly according to a recipe for more than half a century, the patent for which belongs to Starbucks. Only in this chain you can try a real drink.

A standard portion of Frappuccino is 460 ml, served with a straw. The required ingredients are doppio (double espresso), sugar, ice and chilled milk.

All these ingredients, including ice, are whipped. This is also a fundamental difference between Frappuccino and Frappe. Recipes for making frappe coffee can be found here.

Subtleties of the recipe

When preparing the drink, you can use different fillers and syrups. By experimenting, new tastes are discovered. For example, a caramel Frappuccino goes well with chocolate poured on top of the drink.

Traditionally, the drink is topped with whipped cream, but other ingredients can be added to vary the flavor. Often the cream is topped with the syrup contained in the drink.

It’s almost impossible to make a Frappuccino at home the same as at Starbucks. The chain does not reveal its secrets and does not sell some special ingredients.

In order for the strength of coffee to be felt in a Frappuccino, you need to use twice as many coffee beans, or half as much water.
