Immediately after purchasing a new fragrance, I can't wait to apply it to my skin. However, you shouldn't do this. To maintain the quality of the perfume, follow several recommendations for opening a new bottle:

    • Once you bring it home, put the purchase in a dark place for several hours, allow the molecular structure of the eau de toilette to recover;
    • After opening the spray bottle, spray it several times to the side and only then apply it to the skin.

If you follow the simple rules, the aroma will not disappoint you and will remain the same as when purchased in a store.

    Why do perfumes spoil?

Sometimes it happens that eau de parfum expires. Less often, perfume deteriorates from external harmful influences long before the end of the specified date. The composition of perfumes includes a wide variety of chemical elements, some of which are easily influenced by external factors, such as temperature or light conditions, air humidity, and sealed packaging. To avoid finding a spoiled fragrance on your dressing table, follow simple rules for storing a cosmetic product.

How long do perfumes, eau de toilette and eau de parfum last?

The shelf life of a perfume is primarily influenced by its constituent components. If the perfume is made on the basis of natural oils, it cannot be stored for as long as its alcohol-based counterpart. On average, the manufacturer indicates a recommended storage time of 3 to 5 years. Always pay attention to the manufacturing date and expiration date of the product. This only applies to sealed vials. It is proposed to store opened toilet water for no more than 18 months.

By following simple recommendations, you will be satisfied with your scent and will use it for a long time until it runs out.

    Other features of perfume storage

Bottle fullness. If your favorite perfume is only two sprays away from a 100 milliliter container, then there is no point in saving it for a special occasion. They can spoil before they are needed, since an empty bottle contains a lot of air, including some oxygen, which has a destructive effect on the aroma.

For the same reason, it is not recommended to buy large containers. It is better to have several bottles of 30 - 40 ml.

If you bought perfume without a sprayer, then it is recommended to purchase a travel size atomizer (15 - 30 ml) and pour the perfume into it using a special funnel. It will be more convenient for you to use them, and the main container with perfume can be reliably protected from the harmful effects of the sun, changing temperature and humidity. In addition, such a small atomizer is convenient to carry with you.

The shelf life of natural perfume without alcohol content depends on the esters included in the composition. Citrus oils evaporate the fastest, in about 2 years, while others can last up to 5 years without losing their scent. Do not store eau de toilette or perfume in your car. Frequent temperature changes will definitely ruin even the best and highest quality fragrance.

Rule 5: Don't throw away spoiled perfume

Please note that the box indicates a minimum storage period, which can be extended. You can maintain the quality of your perfume for a longer time if:

    • confident in the quality of the aroma;
    • use it rarely;
    • observe temperature and light conditions;
    • maintain humidity in the storage area;
    • do not leave the bottle open.

If, nevertheless, the aroma has deteriorated, but does not cause allergic or other skin reactions in you, it can be added to a cosmetic body cream or shower gel.

    Secrets of using oil-based perfumes

It’s not enough to buy a unique, bright aroma that enchants and intoxicates. It is important to use it in such a way that it does not become intrusive, does not disturb others, or is too intense.

    Need to consider:

    • “Circle of aroma” - it is unacceptable for the smell of perfume to be felt further than at arm’s length. Therefore, you should not apply perfume to all the pulsating points of the body at once, just choose 1-2.
    • Store correctly - do not expose the bottle to direct sunlight, close the lid tightly, do not heat, otherwise the composition may change the aroma, it will turn into a sharp one or disappear.
    • Choose according to the season - summer varieties are lighter and create a feeling of freshness. Winter ones are rich, warming, tart and viscous. If you apply intense perfume in hot weather, it will sound much brighter on a hot body.
    • Take into account your skin type - those with oily skin will feel the perfume longer, dry skin - less, you need to apply it more often.
    • Nutrition - the foods you eat can change the sound of a composition. If you prefer meat, protein dishes, hot spices, a hint of bitterness may appear. Fruits and berries will enhance the sound of floral chords. Drinking alcohol will provoke a bright opening of the middle chords. Medicines and tobacco smoke can completely change the composition.

Remember that fragrance unfolds differently for each person. The aroma intensifies, fades, and transforms due to skin type, age, and activity. It’s good if after application a person stops feeling the intense smell. This is a signal that the perfume suits you.

Where should you not keep perfume bottles?

As mentioned above, perfume is influenced by a variety of external factors, such as direct rays of light, high or low temperature, high or low humidity. Therefore, do not keep the fragrance in an open space. An elegant bottle looks beautiful on the dressing table, but it’s better to put it in a cabinet, box or dresser drawer. If you decide to store your perfume in a box, do not keep it in hot or cold conditions. Although cardboard protects from light, it cannot protect perfume from very high temperatures and very humid exposure.

    Rules for storing perfumes

Having found out the most harmful factors affecting perfume, having dealt with common myths, nothing prevents us from deducing the main rules on how to properly store perfume . From here we get the answer to the question: where to properly store perfumes. It turned out that there are not many such conditions.

    Rule 1. Avoid excessive lighting

Sunlight threatens the safety of perfumes. We have already determined this. This harm is complex - ultraviolet radiation, temperature, and so on. However, lighting can also be artificial - what about “electric light”?

    • With incandescent lamps it is simpler in terms of ultraviolet radiation - very little of it is generated. In this case, more heat is emitted. Placing in close proximity is not recommended.
    • Modern fluorescent and other energy-saving lamps already produce more ultraviolet radiation. But it is blocked in large quantities by the glass of the case, still letting something through.

Does this mean that artificial lighting is as harmful to perfume as sunlight? To a much lesser extent. But there is no exact data, at least I was not able to find any research on this topic. On the other hand, it is stupid to hide your perfume collection during the day and take it out at night. Choose a place for any occasion.

    Where to store perfume?

Based on everything considered, the best way seems to me to be a cabinet with opaque doors away from the window and radiator (air heater, stove, fireplace). These are often hung above dressing tables - they are ideal for storing perfume.

Another similar option is a lifting table panel with a built-in drawer underneath:

Maybe not everyone can afford a special cabinet for perfume. Some people simply don’t have the space or funds for it. In second place I would place chests of drawers and other drawers. In terms of protection from light, they are okay, but be careful when opening and closing, you can break your favorite bottles.

The most budget option is to keep the box. Yes, it will protect from the sun and other light, but it will not cope with the direct effects of temperature. Well, if there is no other choice, then this is better than the light.

    Rule 2. Normal temperature

We have already devoted quite a lot of time to this issue. Let me just remind you that the temperature should be “normal”, and its changes, if this cannot be avoided, should be gradual. Let's take another look at the temperature scale (green is acceptable for long-term storage, yellow is for temporary storage, red is unacceptable):

    Rule 3. Tightness

Everything here is extremely simple: open or poorly closed perfumes will simply run out of steam . They will also create a not particularly comfortable atmosphere in the house. Here you can debate for a long time what is more harmful - the volatility of the alcohol component or the aromatic one, but in general it makes no difference, because in both options the composition will change, which is unacceptable for us.

Do you know what's most interesting? That these are all the rules. The rest follows from them or has nothing to do with storing perfumes.

Can perfume be stored in the refrigerator?

There is an opinion that eau de parfum should be stored in the refrigerator. Actually this is not true. Perfume is a cosmetic product whose optimal storage temperature is +15 degrees. Everyone knows that in the refrigerator compartment it is much lower, which means that once in the refrigerator the perfume will be exposed to lower temperatures.

It is better not to store perfumes and eau de toilette in the refrigerator.

Ideally, eau de toilette is stored in a dark place, which a modern refrigerator is not, since it is equipped with a bright lamp that turns on when the door is opened. Plus, by constantly removing the aroma from the refrigerator for use, you risk creating unfavorable conditions for it in the form of sudden temperature changes.

Another disadvantage of storing perfume this way is the mixing of scents. The smell of food is unlikely to seep through a closed bottle, but food may smell of a strong aroma. Therefore, before putting eau de toilette in the refrigerator, think about how this will affect the safety of the perfume and the quality of food.

Until 2012, oil perfumes had no expiration dates. What happened? Our Rosstandart began to monitor

Resolution dated February 2, 2001 No. 11 On approval and introduction of rules for certification of perfumery and cosmetics

products: clause 3.10.1 The validity period of the certificate for mass-produced products should not exceed three years.

Big brands did not change their policy and our importers began to put stickers with an expiration date. And the little ones

companies dependent on our market, such as Afnan, Khadlaj, Khalis and Junaid, agreed to meet and set dates. 3 years later

a conflict of interest has arisen.

Oil perfumes have their own production specifics; they are not produced constantly, so from time to time they disappear from the counter.

The company purchases the components, assembles the bouquet according to the formula and bottles it. This batch may be sold several times

years, and initially the aroma is “raw”, and the first batches are on sale, cheaper than subsequent ones. After 6-12 months the aroma

is gaining popularity and becoming more expensive. When the batch ends, the price rises to a maximum and it disappears from

sales. The cycle turns out to be more than three years.

As a result, most followed the European path and began to set only the release date.

It’s interesting that a new batch often differs from the previous one: some component was not found, or they found a different quality, but

Somehow the price increased and it was replaced with synthetics or eliminated. And in some cases, they decided not to repeat the scent at all and it

    turns into a rarity.

With oil perfumes, the best solution is to buy them and let them sit.

The aroma will open up and become more expensive. The main thing is to store it correctly. What can really ruin perfume? This is the light, for sure

Store expensive perfumes in bottles with opaque walls or in cases. Light is the main enemy. Regarding temperature:

Neither heat nor cold affects the aroma. Perfume stands for hours at Dubai airport in summer in 50 degree heat, and also falls in winter

It's 30 degrees cold when we deliver, and the aroma doesn't deteriorate. So there is no point in keeping it in the refrigerator. Does it spoil

aroma in the air during use? No, it doesn’t spoil it, and some oils need air, especially oud. By

technology, after a certain interval of time, containers with oud oil are opened and they stand in the open air for a day.

Some oils emit unpleasant gases, and if the bottle has been closed for a long time, you can notice them when you open it. That's why,

Don’t forget about the perfume in your collection, you also want to breathe it in from time to time.

But there are also spoiled perfumes. They are easy to identify; they have an unpleasant, monotonous chemical smell.

Why is this happening? To increase the amount of oil, it is diluted with a cheap chemical. Initially it has no smell

and the manufacturer gets more oil for little money. But gradually it eats up the aroma and kills all the notes. By the way, this

can happen with a spray, if the oil has been diluted, then even in alcohol, the chemical will begin to appear over time. Because

there were few cases, then I hope this is not company policy, but simply theft in production or they did not calculate the number

oils for bottles (the bottles were left, but there was no oil, they diluted it and solved the problem).

Over time, some perfumes develop sediment.

There are two options: the first is white musk, it solidifies at room temperature and precipitates or floats

flakes inside the oil. All you need to do is put the bottle in hot water, not boiling water, and the musk will melt. Second

option is a preservative that crystallizes over time, usually at the bottom, around the stick. If you shake the perfume or

pull out the stick, it begins to float in the oil. It looks dark in color, with a caramel-like structure. On the quality of the aroma

    does not affect.

Natural perfume is a living product, judge not by numbers but by aroma, and respect age! And since with each crisis, due to savings, the quality drops noticeably, we can confidently say that the old scent is better than the new two. ))

How to find out the year of manufacture of a perfume

To correctly calculate the shelf life of perfumes, you need to know their production date. Sometimes the manufacturer does not indicate the year of manufacture on the packaging. However, almost every box or bottle has a batch number stamped on it, from which you can calculate the date of manufacture.

Enter the phrase “deciphering the date of manufacture and determining the expiration date of cosmetics” in the search bar on the Internet and follow the link. You will see a page where you will need to enter the brand of the cosmetic product and the batch code indicated on the package. After entering the necessary data, the necessary information will appear in front of you: production date, expiration date, expiration period (if any).

How to properly store closed bottles?

Recommendations for storing sealed perfumes do not differ from storage standards for open ones. It is also undesirable to expose them to direct rays of light, keep them in very hot or, on the contrary, cold places, as well as in areas of high humidity.

If necessary, you can extend the shelf life of a closed bottle specified by the manufacturer. Leave the perfume in the box, wrap it in film or polyethylene, and place it in a chest of drawers or a closet drawer. It is advisable for the perfume to be in a standing position. By following simple recommendations, you will extend the storage time of your eau de toilette by at least several years.

How to properly store oil perfumes

Recommendations for storing oil perfumes correspond to all recommendations for storing alcohol-based analogues. They are also afraid of light, too high or low temperatures, and high humidity. You can add one more factor to the listed factors—the level of vibration. Do not carry or carry oil-based perfumes in your car, do not shake the bottle before use, and store it on a shelf and not in a drawer. Any unnecessary movement of the perfume inside the bottle can negatively affect its aroma.

Perfume can be used for a long time, subject to simple storage standards. This period may even exceed the expiration date specified by the manufacturer if the fragrance is not exposed to light, temperature changes or humidity. This way you can not only preserve your favorite perfume, but also give it a vintage feel.

Bad advice, or How not to store perfume

I understand that you are already tired of reading, and most importantly, you have learned the rules on how to store perfume at home. But just a couple more minutes of your attention. We need to look very briefly at typical cases of improper storage.

Perfumes in the glove compartment of the car, and in the car in general

A very bad option. There is constant vibration, abnormal temperature, and temperature changes. For example, in winter, in an open parking lot it is minus in the cabin; when driving, the temperature increases sharply. In summer, the difference can be no less - in a closed car, the interior warms up to very high temperatures. Such a complex effect will most likely finish off the composition as quickly as possible.

    Storing perfume in the bathroom

A very common mistake. And not only women's. “Puffing up” after shaving is a favorite male pastime. But the bathroom is not suitable for long-term storage of perfumes . You probably already guessed that we are again talking about temperature and its difference. Do not be lazy to take the perfume to a better storage place after use; you cannot store perfume in the bathroom.
