Oatmeal porridge in a slow cooker
When most people hear the word “oatmeal,” they think of oatmeal porridge, which cooks quickly, is quite soft, and is suitable for feeding both young and old. However, cereals (not only oatmeal, but also the now widespread wheat, buckwheat, corn and other types of cereals) appeared in our diet relatively recently, about a hundred years ago. Previously, for many centuries, our ancestors ate whole grain cereals. This type of cereal is the most useful because it retains all vitamins and nutrients. Today I want to invite you to prepare milk porridge from oatmeal in a slow cooker .
In a saucepan with apples and cinnamon
This is one of the classic options for preparing oatmeal.
Uncrushed oatmeal, recipe with apples and cinnamon.

Recipe for oatmeal porridge in a slow cooker:
Today I have Goodwill brand oatmeal.
It says: soak the cereal for 1 hour, then cook for 15 minutes at the rate of 1 part cereal to 2 parts water. When I cooked it for the first time, these proportions of water seemed too small to me, the cereal was hard after cooking, so now I took 3 glasses of liquid. Before that, I had a different brand of oatmeal, it was suggested to soak it for 3 hours and cook for 1 hour, so the cereals are different.
I didn’t soak the cereal in advance, but I cooked the porridge on a timer, set it overnight, so that by the morning it would cook and sit for two hours.
So, to get delicious oatmeal, rinse the cereal well, pour it into a slow cooker, add milk, add salt and sugar. Turn on the “milk porridge” mode.
Cook oatmeal porridge in a slow cooker until the signal. It will be good if the finished porridge sits for a little longer. I leave it on the heat for an hour or two.
Put butter in a plate, you can add raisins, other dried fruits, if you want the raisins to steam well, you can add them immediately when cooking the porridge. Sugar can be replaced with honey (add honey to ready-made porridge).
Oatmeal in the slow cooker is ready. Bon appetit.

Oatmeal in a slow cooker
Oatmeal is a breakfast familiar to many since kindergarten and childhood. From the very morning, it saturates the human body with a number of useful vitamins and minerals: magnesium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, E, A, PP and many others. If you regularly eat oatmeal for breakfast, you can prevent a number of diseases associated with the intestines, stomach and gall bladder.
According to nutritionists, it is difficult to find a healthier product than oatmeal. Oat grains are 98% coarse fiber, 30% of which is insoluble. They help cleanse the body of fats, which contribute to the growth of cholesterol, and toxins, which increase the risk of cancer. That is why oatmeal is an essential product that is often included in various diets. With its help you can not only benefit the body, but also control weight.
Oatmeal cooked in a slow cooker is considered a balanced breakfast because it contains a lot of fiber. This helps the stomach to be full for a long time. Breakfasts containing sugar and fat are also considered nutritious, but after an hour the body will begin to require food again.
Oatmeal is perfectly absorbed by the body, so it does not cause a feeling of heaviness in the stomach, unlike foods such as bread or meat.
The benefits of cereals
It’s not for nothing that cereal dishes are so famous and revered all over the world. Oatmeal contains almost all vitamins: A, E, B, PP. It is famous for the large amount of sodium, zinc, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, and calcium in its composition. Oatmeal contains antioxidants, known as major free radical fighters. Porridge and other cereal dishes help normalize weight, cleanse the intestines, and combat stress and nervous tension. The protein included in the composition is an excellent “building material” for the body’s cells during forced dieting. It is noteworthy that oatmeal is capable of removing heavy metals, which are “accumulated” by residents of industrial cities and megalopolises.
How to cook oatmeal in a slow cooker
Many people don't make oatmeal or whole grain porridge in the morning because they think the cooking process takes a long time. However, we will refute the stereotypes and take a closer look at how to cook oatmeal in a slow cooker without spending a lot of effort and time.
Simply pour the cereal into a cup, add water to the contents and sprinkle salt or sugar to taste. To get porridge with moderate thickness, you need to maintain a 4:1 proportion of water and oatmeal. If you need a thinner consistency, you can add a little water, if it’s thick, reduce it. Simple oatmeal can quickly get boring, in which case, you can add slices of fruits, vegetables or nuts to it.
Before you start cooking, you can look through the recipe book, which usually comes with the multicooker. Usually you can find many different recipes for breakfasts and cereals in it. An important point is to read the instructions. This will help you learn the full functionality of the multicooker and prepare a delicious and healthy breakfast.
When preparing oatmeal, you should adhere to the following tips:
- It is advisable not to add margarine to the oatmeal; butter is more suitable as a supplement, which will make the porridge more aromatic and nutritious;
- the finished porridge should be left in the multicooker cup for another 10 minutes, so it will become more tender;
- Before cooking, you need to choose the right grain. “Hercules” produces a thick consistency, while “Extra” produces a thinner consistency;
- When the question is “What should I add to cereal - water or milk?”, you should give preference to your taste. Porridge made with water has a low calorie content, while porridge made with milk has a higher nutritional value.
Preparation
I will have salted oatmeal in a slow cooker using water. That's why I add salt to the cereal. I pour them into the multicooker bowl. If necessary, pre-rinse the cereal. At this stage, sugar is added (if sweet porridge is planned).
Pour water into the flakes with salt. You can warm it right away to speed up the cooking process.
Install the “porridge” program. In the Redmond multicooker it is in the “cooking” mode. Cooking time for thin oatmeal will be 15-20 minutes. I set it to 16 minutes. If the cereal is whole, it will take about 30 minutes to be ready.
During this time my porridge was completely ready. In addition, you can also let it brew in the “keep warm” mode. After the beep, add a piece of butter. Mix carefully and serve.
This is how easy it is to prepare tender, tasty and healthy oatmeal in a slow cooker using water. And what to serve it with, decide for yourself.
On a note
- After the signal sounds to indicate the end of the cooking process, you can observe liquid on top of the porridge. Don’t immediately think that you need to increase the cooking time. Just stir the contents of the bowl and look at the consistency.
- The longer the porridge is heated, the more tender it becomes. And if you immediately turn off this mode and let the dish cool, the porridge will become thicker. Therefore, I recommend not turning off the heating until you start serving the oatmeal.

The five most commonly used ingredients in slow cooker oatmeal recipes are:
Subtleties in the cooking process vary and depend on the specific recipe. The size of the flakes and their thickness also matter. This mainly affects the choice of volume of liquid, water, milk or cream. For thick and large flakes that absorb a lot of moisture, liquid is taken in a ratio of 1:3. For delicate, small and thin flakes, 1:2 is enough. It is also worth considering the thickness of the porridge: some people like it thicker, some like it thinner.
The standard “Porridge” program in any multicooker is designed for more serious grains like rice or pearl barley. This mode is not suitable for rolled oats - it takes too long. For oatmeal in a slow cooker, about ten minutes at most is enough. When the multita turns off, you don’t need to open the lid right away - you should wait another ten minutes. During this time, the porridge will “calm down”, infuse, become tastier, and the foam will settle.

Oatmeal porridge in a slow cooker
I know that many people imagine oatmeal to be such a glue-like substance because they only ate oatmeal made from flakes. But if you cook oatmeal in a slow cooker from real cereal, you may experience some culture shock. That it is not paste at all, but a very funny and tasty dish. The only thing is that it takes a very long time to prepare. One and a half hours of cooking and the same amount of time for the exercise. Actually, because of this, Hercules came into fashion. Not every housewife has time to spend half a day hustling around the stove, keeping intense attention on the pan. God forbid you gape! When you realize it, the porridge is already burnt. In general, you understand why now you rarely find a bag of oatmeal in any kitchen cabinet. But with the advent of the multicooker, oatmeal becomes a frequent guest on our tables. After all, you don’t need to watch her at all! I chose the program, set the time - and that’s it. The multicooker will cook the porridge itself, and then switch to heating, where the porridge will reach the desired condition. All we have to do is place the steaming oatmeal on plates. Doesn't she look beautiful? Grain by grain. These are the miracles our caring electronic hostess is capable of.
- 1.5 multi-cups oatmeal;
- 0.5 liters of water (for soaking cereals overnight);
- 3 teaspoons sugar;
- a pinch of salt
- 7-8 multi-glasses of milk (depending on how thick you like your porridge);
- 30 g butter.
Cooking time is one and a half hours.
Method for preparing oatmeal in a slow cooker
If you are going to cook oatmeal in a slow cooker, for example, for breakfast, then pour boiling water over the oatmeal the night before, thanks to this the time for preparing the porridge will be significantly reduced. In the morning, rinse the cereal under running cool water to remove starch.
Place the cereal into a multicooker bowl, add salt, sugar, and milk. Mix the ingredients well.
Place the bowl in the multicooker, close the lid and use the “Cooking” button to select the “Porridge” mode. Using the “Setting time” and “Cooking time” buttons, set the time to 1 hour 30 minutes (since I made oatmeal in a slow cooker for the first time, the cooking time had to be adjusted during the cooking process - from 1 hour to an hour and a half).
When the beep sounds, open the multicooker and add butter to the porridge. Stir.
Close the lid again and leave the milky oatmeal porridge to warm for at least an hour.
With this cooking method, oatmeal is “steamed” until soft, the porridge acquires a creamy taste and viscous consistency.

It is important to use a cleaned slow cooker to boil the cereal. The first thing to do is remove the inner cover and rinse the valve. These components may retain particles of your past dishes, and during heating they will begin to release their own smell. If you don’t expect your morning oatmeal to smell as fragrant as yesterday’s pea soup, don’t forget to thoroughly rinse the multicooker.
Here are a few more subtleties that will make cooking oatmeal in a slow cooker hassle-free:
- Do not rinse the cereal. They are immediately ready for use. Pour them into a bowl with other ingredients and connect the multicooker.
- Control the ratios. To cook porridge in a “culinary assistant” you need more liquid than to cook in a saucepan, since the porridge completely swells. The smallest amount of liquid is four multi-cups per cup of cereal. In this proportion, the porridge will be moderately thick. A larger volume of water will make it more watery.
- Eliminate the risk of “escape” of porridge. You don't have to wash the appliance and the table around it if you are preparing a small amount of food. However, a porridge of oats in a slow cooker for a large family lunch can run away. To prevent this from happening, apply a “rim” of butter 5 cm above the level of the ingredients.
- Stir products. After laying the flakes, as well as other ingredients, you must mix thoroughly. Use a plastic spatula for this.
- Cook in the “Porridge” program. Its analogues are “Milk porridge”, “Pilaf”. In this mode, the unit maintains a temperature level of 90°, and fifteen to twenty minutes before the end of the mode it turns off the heater, allowing the mass to steam out. Therefore, do not rush to turn off the multicooker before the notification, even if the cooking time is 50 minutes.
- Use safe milk and water. Since milk oatmeal in a slow cooker is made without boiling, the products must be initially harmless. Pasteurized milk, boiled or filtered water are suitable.
- Oatmeal is one of the few cereals that can be conveniently prepared in delayed start mode. It is allowed to add ingredients in the evening. Unlike rice or buckwheat, the flakes will not swell overnight. And in the morning they will always be ready at the specified time, and the porridge will have the ideal thickness.
