How to cook delicious porridge in the microwave from different cereals

In the microwave you can cook porridge from various grains - from quick-cooking semolina to long-cooking buckwheat or pearl barley. Choose the desired consistency - the finished dish can be liquid, soup-like, crumbly or viscous. You can cook the porridge in a deep plate or earthenware bowl, or in a special saucepan for the microwave. The last option is especially convenient if you want to prepare a dish for the whole family.

How to cook oatmeal in the microwave

There are some types of porridges that can simply be cooked on a gas stove in a saucepan.
These are porridges such as rice, buckwheat, oatmeal and semolina. The other type constantly burns to the bottom or tries to “escape.” You need to be more careful with such cereals. It is important to constantly stay at the stove, stir and monitor the fire level. Such dishes include porridges made from corn, pearl barley, millet, wheat and barley groats. Due to the peculiarities of preparing such dishes, they are considered rarer guests on our table. It is important to know that the listed cereals are incredibly healthy. They contain a number of elements important for the healthy functioning of the body. Porridge can also be cooked in a microwave oven - this is a big time saver, since there is no need to constantly stay vigil near the stove during the cooking process. In order for a dish cooked in a microwave to be perfect, you must follow strict proportions of all ingredients and cooking time.

Any porridge has certain cooking characteristics. You need to know such subtleties in order to prepare delicious dishes. For example, even if you follow the recipe, cooked rice porridge will stick together slightly. In order to rid millet cereal of the bitter taste, it is worth keeping it in cold water for some time in advance, and then rinsing it thoroughly more than once. Be sure to soak the pearl barley in the evening and cook it in the morning. Then the process of cooking it in the microwave will take less time. When cooking semolina, constantly stir the porridge to prevent the grain from settling to the bottom and the appearance of unnecessary lumps.

When cooking in a microwave oven, porridge tends to splatter. This can be prevented by pouring liquids no more than half the container. When cooking, you can use not only water, but also milk, but it is worth considering that in this case it will be necessary to extend the cooking time, since milk does not boil in the microwave, but only simmers. I would like to offer my recipe for preparing such a simple dish as oatmeal in the microwave. You can also cook semolina porridge in the microwave.

How much milk should be added (proportions)

Before cooking the porridge, decide on the consistency you want to achieve in the end.

Barley porridge is especially tasty and satisfying if it is prepared with milk, viscous or liquid consistency.

  • the ratio of cereals and milk for liquid porridge is 1:4, with 20 minutes of cooking;
  • the ratio of cereals and milk for viscous porridge is 1:3, with 15 minutes of cooking;
  • the ratio of cereals and liquid for crumbly porridge is 1:2.5, with 15 minutes of cooking.

Milk likes to “run away” from the pan if you don’t watch it. Therefore, after adding the cereal, wait until it boils again, then reduce the heat. Do not forget to stir the porridge during cooking, this will protect it from burning and uneven cooking of the cereal.

Rice porridge in the microwave is ideal for breakfast, lunch or afternoon snack. It turns out juicy, appetizing and tasty. You can make this dish sweet or salty if you wish. If you are short on time, buy steamed cereal - it cooks in 8-10 minutes, while regular rice takes 12 minutes.

Remember that when cooking in the microwave, the dish must be stirred in the middle of cooking so that the cereal cooks evenly. And one more thing - do not cover the container with a lid under any circumstances if you are creating porridge with milk. The milk foam will run off the edges of the container and remain on the tray, and the porridge will turn out undercooked!

Add good quality butter, preferably farm butter, when serving the dish, as well as honey of any kind if you decide to replace granulated sugar with it. A pinch or two of ground cinnamon will be especially relevant for such porridge.

So, prepare the necessary ingredients to prepare rice porridge with milk in the microwave and let's start cooking!

Pour the rice into a deep container and fill with cold tap water. Rinse thoroughly, drain and refill with water. Rinse the cereal several times until the liquid remains clear. If you do not wash the starch out of rice, the porridge will taste bitter.

Place the rinsed grains into a deep microwave-safe container—one without patterns and not metal. Add a couple of pinches of salt, granulated sugar and other spices as desired.

Fill everything with milk of any fat content and any type. If desired, the milk can be heated in the microwave for 2-3 minutes to help the porridge cook faster. Place the container with the cereal in the milk in the microwave without covering it with a lid. Set the timer for 12 minutes. After 5 minutes, carefully remove the container and stir its contents, then finish cooking.

Season the crumbly rice porridge with butter and stir. Cover the container with porridge with a plate or saucer for 5-6 minutes to steam.

Place the microwaved rice porridge into bowls and serve warm. You can supplement it with honey or ground cinnamon, jam or jam.

What's the fastest way to cook oatmeal?

I often eat porridge for breakfast and I made it by adding oats and milk/water to a bowl, putting it in the microwave until it boiled and waiting for it to cool.

The problem with this method is that the whole process takes 20-25 minutes, mainly due to the time it takes for everything to cool down to a level that won't burn my moth.

Unfortunately, this amount of time is often unacceptable in the morning. Is there an alternative way that is faster? I could shave for a few minutes by adding boiling water to the dry oats, but there's still 15-20 minutes for everything to cool down.

For my daughters, I usually have a quick porridge process that goes like this:

  1. Oats, sugar and water to cover (we don't use milk but it would be the same) in a bowl.
  2. Microwave for about 3 minutes, just until boiling.
  3. This makes a fairly thick mush that is stirred for a minute to reduce.
  4. Place the ice cube in a bowl and stir until it disappears.

Voila, edible warm porridge, not hot.

The whole thing takes about five minutes, and for three of those times the bowl is in the microwave, you can do other things.

If you want to save time in the morning , you can do so by doing it overnight and avoiding cooking everything together. Mix it cold and leave it in the refrigerator. Obviously you can also refine this for more interesting results.

Cook in the microwave

Microwave the porridge according to package directions (oats are obviously faster).

Add cooling ingredients

Add the correct amount of cooling ingredients.

I usually add a little milk and a few frozen berries.

About 10 frozen blueberries for a good batch of cereal adds a few extra vitamins, more flavor, and makes them ready to eat right away. Adding frozen raspberries, Nutella and pistachios is also delicious.

Mix and ready to eat. It's a two-minute process from preparation to eating.

I may be a heretic, but I use quick oats. This takes about a minute and a half in the microwave and I let it cool, cover for about another minute.

When I want oatmeal, I cook it in the rice cooker. It has a timer and a porridge setting so I can set it up the night before and start it at 6am or whatever so it finishes 15-20 minutes before I'm ready to eat it. This way it cools noticeably and I can add milk etc. to cool it further.

The downside to this is that you can't cook it with liquid milk as it might spoil (similar to cooking bread in a bread machine overnight, eggs and liquid milk are not allowed).

As far as I can see there are two options:

Switch to quick/instant oats - they are cut much thinner so they have more surface area and absorb liquid much faster. You can usually quickly cook oats to the consistency of porridge in 2-3 minutes. Pour some cool milk on top and you'll have your food at the perfect temperature within 5 minutes.

Buy a thermos and cook your oats overnight. This is a cheap and effective way to use higher quality oats. Before you go to bed, preheat your thermos by leaving some boiling water in it for a few minutes. Then pour in the oats and boil hot water in the correct ratio before quickly sealing the container and leaving it to cook overnight.

The second option gives you slow-cooked oats without the expense of running a slow cooker overnight.

Related to @AlexandreRafalovitch's answer: Hot cereal like oatmeal can be slow-cooked overnight in a slow cooker. The amount of water may need adjustment. but it works.

Don't use a bowl to cool them, use a large baking sheet or baking dish

Once spread out, they will cool down in a couple of minutes.

Also be more precise in the amount or quantity of milk/water you add and microwave for the minimum time required (usually three minutes). Some experiments usually show that you can get rid of it with less added liquid and less time in the microwave.

Cook your porridge before you shower so you have something to do while it cools. Porridge will also cool faster in a shallower bowl with a spoon in it: a shallower one gives more surface area for heat to escape, and the spoon acts as a heat sink.

Beneficial features

Most people are sure that semolina is a valuable and useful product for the health of the human body, which has a beneficial effect on all organs.

  • Semolina porridge contains vitamins (PP, E, B1 and B2), minerals (calcium, potassium, magnesium, chlorine, phosphorus and sulfur) and trace elements (iron, fluorine, vanadium, molybdenum, zinc and others).
  • It effectively cleanses the intestines. Semolina porridge, like a sponge, absorbs all harmful substances, toxins, waste, fat, mucus, liquid and removes it from the body. Improves the functioning of the digestive system, normalizes the internal environment and microflora.
  • Semolina porridge is recommended to be included in the diet during the postoperative period and during illness.
  • Prevents the development of cancer, carries out prophylaxis.
  • It has a beneficial effect on the general condition of the body: strengthens the immune system, improves sleep and appetite, restores the functioning of the stomach and intestines, improves peristalsis, and rejuvenates the skin.

Oatmeal porridge in the microwave. Quick and healthy breakfast

We can talk endlessly about the benefits of oatmeal. This product stabilizes the gastrointestinal tract and saturates the body with vitamins and microelements. In addition, oatmeal has a beneficial effect on the walls of the stomach, freeing it from various unnecessary and even harmful accumulations, that is, it works as a kind of “brush” for the body.

Quick breakfast

As you know, it is recommended to eat oatmeal for breakfast. It is useful to saturate your body right in the morning and give it strength for the achievements of a new day. But you don’t always have the mood or desire to stand at the stove for a long time and waste precious time preparing porridge. In this case, a microwave oven comes to the aid of housewives. It is the microwave that will allow you to make a hearty and healthy breakfast of oatmeal in a matter of minutes.

On the water

There are two main cooking recipes. The first is oatmeal in the microwave using water. To do this you will need:

  • 150-200 grams of rolled oats (oatmeal).
  • A pinch of salt.
  • Three teaspoons of sugar.
  • A piece of butter and honey.
  • 350 ml hot water.

Oatmeal porridge in the microwave should be prepared in a special container intended for use in such kitchen appliances. You can also take a deep glass bowl if you don’t have suitable microwave-safe dishes. Pour the required amount of flakes into it and pour boiling water.

Important point. If you prepare porridge from flakes, you can immediately pour them into the cooking container. If oatmeal porridge in the microwave is prepared from rolled oats (cereals), then before cooking it is recommended to rinse it under running water (as we do before cooking rice).

Add sugar, butter and a pinch of salt. Place cereal in the microwave for 12-15 minutes, and cereal for 5 minutes. Power – maximum. If you cook with water, you don’t need to watch the process. Water is not milk, it will not run away. We put the porridge in the microwave and went to take a shower, brush our teeth, etc.

With milk

The second option is oatmeal in the microwave with milk. For this recipe you will need:

  • 4-6 tablespoons of oatmeal.
  • A glass of hot milk.
  • 20 g butter.
  • A teaspoon of honey or three tablespoons of granulated sugar.
  • A little salt to taste.

The cooking method is very similar to the first. First, pour the milk into a special container, then add the cereal. It is important that the liquid covers them almost completely. Some housewives advise pouring milk even one centimeter higher. The dish is prepared in five to six minutes at the highest power.

After the oatmeal porridge is ready in the microwave, add the required amount of sweetness (honey or sugar), add a little salt and put a piece of butter. If desired, the dish can be decorated with dried fruits (raisins, dried apricots, prunes) or nuts.

With pumpkin

You can make a healthier and more satisfying breakfast if you make oatmeal with pumpkin. It is known to be very rich in keratin and vitamin T, which is rare. In addition, pumpkin, unlike dried fruits and nuts, is a low-calorie product. And this is another plus to a healthy breakfast.

The following products are needed for cooking:

  • One hundred grams of pumpkin.
  • 4-5 tablespoons of oatmeal flakes.
  • A little salt.
  • Water – 1 glass.
  • Two tea spoons of sugar.
  • Butter - a piece weighing about twenty grams.

The cooking process is as follows. First, you need to prepare the pumpkin by cutting it into small pieces measuring 2*2cm. The finer the vegetable is chopped, the better it will cook.

Place the chopped pumpkin in a microwave-safe bowl, add oatmeal there and add the required amount of liquid. As for water, housewives have different opinions. Some people like thicker porridge, so they advise pouring a glass of hot water. Others prefer thinner oatmeal, so they recommend using as much water as seems necessary, without specifying exact restrictions in the recipe.

You can immediately add sugar, or you can add all the accompanying ingredients after cooking. Cook oatmeal in the microwave (recipe with pumpkin) for about three minutes at a power of 800 W. If the pumpkin is still a little hard after the time has passed, you can add another minute.

After removing the porridge from the microwave, stir it thoroughly and place butter on top. You can add sugar or honey (if you did not do this at the initial stage of preparation). Or use raisins, which go great with both pumpkin and oatmeal.

With fruits

Among porridge lovers in the morning, there are also those who prefer to add fresh fruit to their oatmeal. But when is it right to do this: at the beginning or at the final stage of cooking? Experienced chefs advise adding accompanying products to the porridge at the end of cooking. Banana, kiwi, orange, mango, apple, pear - add any fruit right before serving. They must first be cut into small pieces.

Oatmeal porridge in the microwave also harmonizes with fresh mint and berries, ground cinnamon and vanilla.
