Nuances

Don’t know how to cook delicious millet as a side dish? In this case, the procedure for processing cereals is similar to porridge. The main thing is to make a crumbly, rather than dense, adhesive mass. To achieve this, it is enough to correctly organize the processing process. Or simply select the necessary cooking settings if the porridge is made in a slow cooker.

When cooking classically on a stove, you need to take millet and water in a ratio of 1:2. Moreover, you should not pour in all the liquid at once. For those who already know how to cook millet, these components will be more than enough. But beginners should improve the water with a small amount of cow butter.

When it melts, it will create an oily film around the grains, which will prevent them from sticking together. It has also been noticed that the darker the grain, the easier it is to cook crumbly porridge from it.

Experienced housewives advise preparing the millet before sending it to the pan to get rid of bitterness. Sometimes this may not be enough, and you will have to soak the food in water for 7 hours. But repeated rinsing in cold water until the liquid is completely clear may be sufficient.

After preparing the grain, pour it into a pan and fill it with water in a ratio of 1:2. Place on the burner. When the liquid begins to boil, reduce the heat to very low, remembering to stir the cereal with a spoon so that it does not burn.

As the moisture boils away, taste the grains and add water if they are still hard. When the dish is ready, which usually happens after 20 minutes, remove the dish from the stove and keep it covered for another quarter of an hour.

In a slow cooker

How to cook millet for a side dish in a slow cooker? This process is less troublesome, but longer. The ingredients required for a pure side dish are the same: two measured shares of water, one measured share of millet. You can process the cereal as described above, or you can use the express method. To do this, rinse the millet under cool water until it stops becoming cloudy, and then pour over boiling water. Then place the grains in a sieve and rinse with cold running water.

Next, place the cereal in the multicooker bowl and add the required amount of water. Add butter and, if desired, salt. Set the “Porridge” or “Pilaf” mode for 55-60 minutes.

After the sound signal indicates the end of cooking, switch the device to the heating mode and leave the porridge in it for another 15 minutes.

How to prepare millet

The cereal should be thoroughly rinsed under running cool water or in a bowl, changing the liquid several times. The water should become clear.

Old grains may taste bitter. If you are not sure about the production date, soak the washed millet in hot water for 5-10 minutes or simply pour boiling water over it. This way you will get rid of possible bitterness.

In a steamer

How to cook millet for a side dish in a double boiler? You need to have the same products. The algorithm is identical:

  1. Wash the cereal, carry out procedures to eliminate the bitter taste, and rinse again.
  2. Place the millet in a steamer container. Fill it with water so that the liquid slightly covers the cereal. If you pour more, the millet will boil too much.
  3. Add sugar, salt and cow's butter.
  4. Close the device and start processing for 50 minutes.

  6. Place washed millet into the vegetable mixture and stir.
  7. Pour 400 ml of water into the pan, stir until it saturates everything.
