The potatoes are cut into slices half a centimeter thick, placed in water to prevent darkening and dried before being placed on a baking sheet, sprinkled with vegetable oil. I have never been to France, so I don’t know how correct the recipe for French Potatoes described here is. I have somewhat modernized my “potatoes”, namely, there is much more meat in it than in traditional recipes, therefore it would be more correct to call this dish “French meat with potatoes” and not vice versa, moreover, I make my potatoes in French multilayer. I have tried out the cooking method for many years, so I describe it with what is called a pure heart.
Wash the pork, cut it into large (but not thick) pieces (about 10x8x1.5 cm), and beat it well. Please note that “good” does not mean turning the meat into minced meat, but evenly punching the meat over its entire surface.
Finely chop 4-5 cloves of garlic,
Place the pork chops in a deep bowl, cover with garlic, salt, pepper, and add any spices to the meat (of course in reasonable quantities, since this is not an oriental dish, there is no need to draw too much attention to the meat in French potatoes!)
Mix the chops with garlic and spices, and set the meat aside to marinate for 15-20 minutes, at about this point you can turn on the oven to preheat.
While the pork chops are marinating and our oven is heating up, cut the onions into thin half rings. (Actually, ideally, it’s better in rings, it’s just that everyone wanted to eat - I was in a hurry this time).
We cry, wipe away our tears and snot, but don’t stop chopping onions!
Peel the potatoes and cut them into thin (no more than 0.5 cm) half rings, and grate the cheese on a coarse grater.
If your oven is hot by this time, pour a little vegetable oil onto the baking sheet and spread it evenly onto the baking sheet either with your fingers or one of our pork chops
We place all our pork chops on a baking sheet, first in one layer, and when this layer is finished, we place them in a second layer, but not end-to-end, but evenly, so that there are as many gaps as possible between the chops of the second layer.
Now we put the baking sheet with the chops in the oven for 10-15 minutes (no more!!!), and... voila! Our huge chops that did not fit into one layer became much more compact. This is my secret secret of how to cram more meat into French potatoes, since no matter what you say, it should be laid out in one layer in this dish. Please note that this stage does not serve to prepare the chops, but only to reduce their size!!! They should be there upon completion - half-finished but still with blood!
We transfer the chops slightly heated in the oven from the baking sheet to a plate, drain all the liquid from the chops from the baking sheet, wash the baking sheet, wipe it and again spread it with vegetable oil.
On a prepared baking sheet we place and evenly distribute quite a bit of chopped onion over the surface (a handful, maximum two), place our slightly dried chops on the onion, evenly spread half of the remaining onion on the chops, salt and pepper the onion, and evenly “drop” mayonnaise, and already after that, lay out the potato slices. Do not pay attention to the layout of the left edge of the baking sheet in this photo of French fries! I didn’t put onions there, since this side of the dish was prepared exclusively for my wife, who can’t stand onions.
After we have evenly laid out a layer of potatoes, we also “drip” this layer with mayonnaise. A little trick - do not use mayonnaise in jars, otherwise you will be tortured to apply it with a spoon! Nowadays there is a lot of mayonnaise with dispensers everywhere...
Now lay out another layer of onion, add a little salt and pepper, and...
Place about 1/3 of the pre-grated cheese on this layer.
Evenly, as last time, lay out the remaining potato rings in one layer,
And on top of it, evenly sprinkle the potatoes with the remaining 2/3 parts of the grated cheese.
We evenly sprinkle mayonnaise on our last layer of cheese in this dish,
And we solemnly place the baking sheet in the preheated oven until our French meat and potatoes are completely cooked. Now I’ll describe in a little more detail how to cook our potatoes in the oven, since this is where trouble can await you, namely: 1) the bottom may burn (the meat will char), but a beautiful crispy crust will not appear; 2) your bottom or top may not burn, but the potatoes will remain raw; 3) the top may burn, but the potatoes will remain raw. To try to avoid this, we do this: place the baking sheet in the middle of the oven preheated to about 200 degrees, and bake the dish for no more than 15 minutes, after which we reduce the temperature to 150 degrees (I put it from 6 to 4) and cook the French potatoes for another 20 minutes , and if by this time the potatoes are almost ready (check with a knife), but a beautiful golden crust has not yet appeared, move the baking sheet to the upper slot of the oven and bake the potatoes until a golden crust forms. Under no circumstances should you place the baking sheet at the bottom of the oven! I’ve never had chops turn out raw, but the potatoes and the “golden crust” occasionally gave me trouble.
So, if you managed to do everything correctly, after about 40-50 minutes of cooking the French-style potatoes, you should end up with something similar to what is shown in the recipe photo.
Well, then everything is simple! Immediately use a spatula to chop the French-style potatoes just taken out of the oven, place them on plates and... bon appetit!
Although French potatoes are both a side dish and a main dish, a quick-made vegetable salad for this dish will be very helpful.

Cooking method:
- Chop the onion, add to the minced meat, add salt and sprinkle with dill.
- Grease a baking sheet with oil, add minced meat, potato mugs, salt, and grease with mayonnaise.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees, place a baking sheet in the upper compartment.
- Bake for 1/3 hour, sprinkle with cheese, leave for another 10 minutes.
French potatoes with meat and mushrooms
Thanks to pre-marinated pork meat and fried mushrooms, this dish turns out incredibly tasty, soft and juicy! To ensure that the “cap” does not turn out too dry, it is better to mix the cheese with mayonnaise or sour cream.
By choosing this amazing version of French potatoes, you can’t go wrong and will definitely delight the guests at your celebration!
For preparation we will need:
- Potatoes – 0.5 kg.
- Pork – 300 gr.
- Champignon mushrooms – 400 gr.
- Onions – 4 pcs.
- Hard cheese – 250 gr.
- Mayonnaise – 4 tbsp. spoons
- Salt - to taste
- Black pepper - to taste
- Vegetable oil – 20 ml.
- Mayonnaise – 3 tbsp. spoons
1. Cut the pork into cubes, add salt and pepper. Mix with mayonnaise and leave to marinate for a while.
2. Cut the mushrooms into slices. Chop the onion into half rings and mash a little with your hands.
3. Fry the mushrooms in a frying pan until the moisture evaporates. Add vegetable oil and onion. Lightly salt and simmer for another 10 minutes.
4. Three raw potatoes on a coarse grater. Lightly squeeze out the excess juice and spread it in an even layer in a mold greased with vegetable oil.
5. The next layers will be meat.
6. Now lay out the mushrooms.
Lubricate the top with pre-prepared grated cheese mixed with mayonnaise.
7. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees, bake the potatoes for 30 minutes.
French potatoes with cream
You can diversify your daily diet by making French-style potatoes with cream. Adding dairy products always gives freshness, tenderness, and a special aroma. Due to the increased fat content compared to milk, cream will add piquancy and originality to the “casserole”. You can use cream when cooking dry, tough types of meat - beef, chicken breast.
Ingredients:
- beef – half a kilo;
- cheese – 0.15 kg;
- cream – ½ cup;
- milk – ½ cup;
- onion – 1 pc.;
- greens - a bunch;
- sour cream – 2 tablespoons;
- mayonnaise – 2 tbsp. l.;
- garlic – clove;
- potatoes - half a kilo.
Cooking method:
- Cut the meat, lightly beat it, fry it, place it in a deep baking tray, brush with a mixture of sour cream, mayonnaise, herbs, and garlic.
- Place a layer of potato circles on top, sprinkle with salt, pepper, grated cheese, pour in a mixture of cream and milk.
- Bake for 55 minutes at 200 degrees.

No one can resist her. You will need:
4 large potatoes for frying, olive oil, 1 tsp. salt, 1.5 tbsp. l. butter, 2 cloves of garlic, 1 tsp. fresh thyme, 1 tsp. fresh parsley.
How to cook:
1. Preheat the oven to 200? C. Cut the potatoes into cubes, mix with salt and olive oil, spread on a baking sheet and bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.
2. Melt the butter in a frying pan, add thinly sliced garlic and thyme, lightly fry and mash the garlic.
3. Place the potatoes on a plate, pour with garlic oil, sprinkle with fresh parsley. Bon appetit!
