The history of the sausage bun

The history of the hot dog began more than 500 years ago!
Best articles Green tomato salad

This year, residents of Frankfurt celebrated the 530th anniversary of the invention of the hot dog.

In an old city chronicle, among the events of 1487, the trade in a new type of thin sausages, invented by a local chef, is mentioned. The sausages were sold complete with a soft flatbread bun.

A century and a half ago, German settlers opened a diner in Chicago that offered delicious sausages, buns and salad.

This is interesting: The wife of Chicago merchant Antoine Feuchtwanger figured out how to make a hot dog, namely, putting a hot sausage into a cut bun back in 1880.

This brilliant idea solved several problems:

  • there was no longer any need to accompany snacks with cutlery (customers often did not return these items);
  • there was no need to wash the dishes (and also to buy them);
  • the dining room, chairs and tables became unclaimed - customers ate on the go;
  • with all this, the eaters did not burn their fingers or get their hands dirty with sauces.

Nowadays, each person in the United States buys approximately six dozen hot dogs every year, and more than 15 billion sausage buns are produced and eaten in the country every year.

Who coined the word "hot dog"

But who was the first to call a new dish hot dog? There are several versions. According to one of them, the author of this word was cartoonist Ted Dargan. In 1901, he wanted to illustrate the fast food that had become popular, but he doubted the correct spelling of the German word Dachshundwurst. Knowing the translation, he used the short and simple hot-dog.

Some believe that the name appeared due to the consonance of the English word dogs and the first part of the German Dachshund: emigrants from Germany pronounced them almost identically.

Another version refers to Yale University students who noticed that dogs were constantly snooping around food trucks, attracted by the tempting smell. Young jokers first nicknamed the cars themselves as dogs, and then the nickname was transferred to sausages.

  • sausages (pork, turkey, chicken, etc.);
  • dressing - a mixture of tomato sauce, mustard and mayonnaise.

An indispensable condition for a tasty hot dog is fresh and high-quality ingredients.

Of course, the ideal option for a regular hot dog would be sausages prepared by yourself. However, this is a very energy-intensive process. Therefore, it is easier to buy them in the store, but you should choose only a fresh product. Sausages designed for grilling or frying over an open fire are well suited. They can also be boiled in boiling water, cooked at low temperature in a microwave oven, or fried in a regular frying pan or coals.

To ensure that the hot dog is not too high in calories, the sausages are fried without vegetable oil.

It’s also better to bake the buns yourself, because it’s not difficult at all. And experiments with refueling are welcome. Unusual options:

  • Greek. Greek yogurt is mixed with garlic and chopped spinach.
  • In Israeli. Chickpeas and sesame paste are spread on lettuce leaves and used instead of the traditional combination of ketchup and mayonnaise.
  • In Ukrainian. The mixture consists of sour cream, mayonnaise and garlic.
  • Mexican. The main ingredients are hot chili peppers, guacamole (avocado pulp, spices, lemon juice), canned beans.

  • Mustard – 2 tablespoons.
  • Ketchup - the same amount.

Optionally include red onion and tomato in the recipe.

How to do:

  1. Boil the sausages until cooked, removing the film. Can be fried on the grill or in a frying pan.
  2. Warm the buns in the microwave (a couple of minutes).
  3. Chop the pickled cucumber as finely as you can.
  4. Cut off the end of the bun. Carefully remove the center (you can, as in the first recipe, push it with a syringe).
  5. Combine the dressings for the sauce in a bowl. Pour some into the base of the loaf.
  6. Push the sliced cucumbers inside. If you decide to add tomatoes and onions, add them at this stage, after finely chopping them. But then it is better to cut the bun lengthwise.
  7. Add the sausage, pour the sauce on top and serve while the appetizer is still hot.
