Pancake recipe in English with translation into Russian

At the end of winter, at the beginning of spring, Maslenitsa is celebrated in Russia. We rarely discuss such holidays in English. In Russian I talk about history and traditions. But we also discuss one of the traditions in English. I think you can easily guess what kind of tradition this is: baking pancakes! I love preparing some simple dishes with the children - no matter how you look at it, there is a lot of benefit - communication, joint work, and you can repeat kitchen and food vocabulary, and most importantly - the result is very tasty and the memories from such activities are the most pleasant.

If you also want to try baking pancakes in English with your kids, here are some ideas:

Read a book

If you are not yet familiar with the book by the famous author Eric Carle “Pancakes, Pancakes!”, I highly recommend getting acquainted with it. It is not very simple, not for beginner level. The book contains detailed vocabulary on the topic of kitchen utensils, products and ready-made instructions on how to bake pancakes.

Pancakes, Pancakes by Eric Carle (click on the title to download the book in electronic format)

This is a fairy tale about how one morning a boy wakes up and asks his mother to bake him a pancake for breakfast. Mom replied that she was busy and would need help - first she needed flour, and for this she needed to collect the wheat, take it to the mill, where the wheat must first be threshed and then ground. Next, Jack gets an egg, milk, butter and jam. After all the ingredients are collected, they take out the necessary kitchen utensils and begin to prepare the dough, and then bake the pancake, throwing it in the air to turn it over.

I just love books like this where kids can see how much work it takes to get a pancake for breakfast.

Here is the same book being read by a native speaker, and besides, since a dad is reading it to his child, he also explains some concepts along the way:

Pancakes with maple syrup are the most famous Canadian dish. It's traditionally eaten for breakfast by almost all people in Canada.

Before you start cooking

First, a little theory. Do you know how to say "cooking" in English? The most commonly used term to denote this concept at the everyday level is cooking. This word refers to the process of preparing food. After all, “cook” in English is cook.

There is another term for translating the Russian word “cooking” - this is cookery. In this version, it means a broader concept and is understood as the art and science of preparing dishes using special technologies. Another term is used with almost the same meaning - culinary (it also shows the art of presenting food in the form of certain dishes).

And one more subtlety. National cuisine (cooking) is called cuisine. This concept characterizes food typical of a certain area (for example, a country). So English cuisine (cooking) will be translated as English cuisine.

Some interesting facts about the dishes whose recipes are given here

Apple crumble - apple pie

History of Apple crumble

began not so long ago - during the Second World War, when there was not enough food, it was issued by ration cards. There weren’t enough ingredients for a classic apple pie, people came up with the idea of making crumbs instead of dough, it didn’t require a lot of ingredients, all that was needed was sugar, margarine, and a little flour.

Also since then Apple crumble

It is not limited to apples, they use peaches, raspberries, and rhubarb.
Americans also call it Apple Crisp
and
Apple Cobbler
. And although this apple dessert was made from a limited number of ingredients, it still remained very tasty, combining the sourness of a baked apple, the sweetness of sugar, and the spice of cinnamon and nutmeg. A PROPER CUP OF TEA (cuppa tea) - Proper English tea

Traditional English tea drinking is not such an ancient custom - it is attributed to Duchess Anne, who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. At that time, only two meals were taken (breakfast and late dinner). Many could hardly bear hunger; there was still a light lunch, but it did not save them from hunger. Duchess Anna introduced the custom of the nobility to take tea with light snacks in the form of muffins and sandwiches.

At first, all this was brought to her boudoir, then she began to invite her friends there, and this began to become a pleasant tradition of spending time and conducting small talk. Then it became a widespread activity and custom. This tea was usually served around 4-5 pm, before the evening walk of the London nobility in Hyde Park. It was served on a low table, so it has another name: low-tea

.

A little later, lower society joined this custom, but they drank tea on ordinary tables, so their tradition of tea drinking was called high-tea

.

Unfortunately, this tradition is no longer a daily occurrence these days; Londoners now have this tea party from time to time, for example, in honor of a birthday or on holidays. However, they try to follow the rules of making “good” tea.

Traditional English fish and chips

Fish and chips is the national British dish and everyone loves it. It can be bought from one of thousands of specialty shops across the country, including the world famous Harry Ramsdens, or you can make it at home by following this simple recipe.

Find the freshest fish you can, frozen is fine too, but be sure to defrost it completely before cooking. Prepare the batter, but only dip the fish in it at the last moment before frying in oil. This way you will always have a slight crunch to the batter. Use floury potatoes for chips, the best varieties are King Edward, Maris Piper and Sante, well (most likely) we have others.

Fish and chips are not as unhealthy as many people think (but not for daily consumption). Compare with other foods: fish and chips contain: 9.42g fat per 100g - the average pizza contains 11g; Medium roast Big Mac - 12.1 g Fish and chips - 595 kcal in a medium portion, and a medium pizza - about 871 kcal. Choose vegetable oil for frying.

Pizza Margherita (pizza Margherita)

It is known that pizza is a very old food of many peoples of the world with some variations. But it owes its modern design and the name “pizza” to the Neapolitans (Italy). The first pizzeria opened in Naples, and the first pizza maker was Rafael Esposito.

It is said that Queen Margaret Teresa visited Naples. She had heard about pizza before, but had never tried it; moreover, pizza was considered the food of the poor, since vegetables, meat and fish products that had not been eaten the day before were usually added to it as a filling. It was difficult to preserve food without refrigerators in a warm climate, it was a pity to throw it away, so we found such a good solution as pizza.

Queen Margaret ordered Raphael to make some special pizza for herself. Raphael invented pizza, which he later named after the queen. He used three ingredients as a filling: white mozzarella cheese, red tomatoes and bright green basil leaves. Thus, the top of the pizza resembled the Italian flag. The Queen was delighted! Since then, this recipe has been popular all over the world.

How to make American Pancakes

1. Prepare ingredients for pancakes. I use 200 ml glasses.

2. Take a deep, convenient container for mixing products with a mixer. Pour milk into it, add vegetable oil, a pinch of salt, sugar and egg. Using a mixer at maximum speed, beat the mixture until foam forms, 5-7 minutes.

3. Add sifted flour and baking powder. Using a mixer, mix all ingredients until smooth, there should be no lumps.

4. The dough is ready; the consistency should not be as thick as for regular pancakes. Let's move on to frying.

5. Take a non-stick frying pan, heat it well and reduce the heat to low. Using a tablespoon, place the dough into a dry frying pan, forming circles. If you are confident in your frying pan, then grease it with a cotton swab dipped in oil or a piece of lard. This procedure needs to be done only before the first batch. As soon as large bubbles form on the surface, turn over and finish cooking on the other side. Pancakes are ready! Have fun!

ENGLISH PANCAKES

Hello, dear readers!

Today I will continue to talk about delicious and nutritious breakfasts for the whole family. I suggest you turn to the English breakfast. Of course, when you mention the English breakfast, the phrase “Oatmeal, sir!” immediately comes to mind, and this porridge is indeed very healthy, but somehow it’s not very suitable for a weekend breakfast. When the whole family is waiting for something tasty and new. It just so happens in my family that my dear husband always cooks breakfast on weekends, and I must say, he does an excellent job with it. And when I still lived with my parents, my dad also always spoiled us with excellent breakfasts - toast, eggs fried in a bread crust, pancakes... Well, I’ll have to “pay off my debts”, and I’ll prepare 7 more breakfasts for my family Today, recipe no. 3 English pancakes! Pancakes - a cake in a frying pan or pancakes sprinkled with syrup - are the most common dish among the British. True, the classic recipe does not contain baking powder, but I decided to add it to make the pancakes fluffy.

Ingredients:

  • Butter – 35 gr.
  • Eggs – 3 pcs.
  • Milk – 500 ml.
  • Baking powder – 2 tsp.
  • Salt - a pinch
  • Sugar – 12 tbsp.
  • Vanilla sugar – 2 tsp.
  • Flour – 500 gr.

Ingredients listed for 13 pancakes.

Preparation:

It is very important that all ingredients are at room temperature. But if you don’t have time to wait, then you can melt a piece of butter in a water bath, or you can heat the milk and melt the butter in it. Which is what I did.
Beat the eggs with a mixer or just a whisk with two types of sugar and salt.

Add lukewarm milk with melted butter, baking powder and gradually stir in flour.

The dough will be thick, as it should be. Let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
Heat a Teflon-coated pancake pan well. There is no need to lubricate anything.
And now the baking of pancakes begins, here you will have to stand at the stove without stopping, as they bake very quickly!
Place a small portion of dough onto the frying pan. I used a regular ladle.

Once the entire surface of the pancake is covered with bubbles,

it must be turned over and continued to fry over low heat for no more than 1 minute.

This is the stack of pancakes I got! It is better to serve them with syrup or jam. We ate it with peach jam.

Bon appetit!

While waiting while the dough was proofing, Maksim invited me to play and showed me how he could fit into a toy basket. The whole family laughed!

Then I was baking pancakes and I had to fight to drive everyone away from the plate so that the photo would turn out to be a whole stack of pancakes.

The next weekend breakfast recipe will be no less tasty and unusual. I have already figured out what it will be and will cook it this weekend so I can tell you about it next week.

What sweets are eaten in America and England

Americans love pies: apple pie, cherry pie, carrot pie and so on. There are recipes for so-called ice cream pie, where in addition to the main ingredients (for example, apples), ice cream is added.

At Christmas in the USA it is customary to buy candy canes (red and white candy canes). They are hung near the fireplace as a treat for Santa.

In America they also love maple syrup . Especially in Canada. It’s not for nothing that they have a maple leaf on their flag. Canadians often add this syrup to their pancakes .

Among the exotic recipes, one can highlight Baked Alaska . The ice cream cake is topped with brown bizet, poured over with whiskey and set on fire. Perfect for a wedding or corporate event.

As for the British, they also have their favorite desserts. Popular ones include pineapple upside down cake , toffee pudding , rice pudding and roly-poly .

And since we started this topic, let’s take a look at Irish cuisine. Among the Irish desserts one can highlight chocolate pots (pots with melted chocolate and whipped cream on top), Irish shortbread (Irish cornmeal cookies), whiskey souffle pie (pie with oranges and whiskey) and, of course, Irish pancakes with lemon.

Idioms about sweets in English

We wanted to read about desserts in English, but it turned out that we learned other topics as well. The words from today's selection can have more than just a direct meaning.

For example, honey can be a term of endearment for a loved one, such as beloved or darling. Almost the same thing means sweety (my sweet, sweetie). But sugar daddy already has a completely different meaning: daddy, daddy (a wealthy man who supports his girlfriend).

The phrase something is like taking candy from a baby (how to take candy from a child) means something extremely simple that can be easily dealt with. And the expression to have a finger in a pie means participation in something. Yes, here the meaning was not so obvious.
