A short excursion into history

It would be possible to do without a small digression about how Daiquiri appeared and why it became so popular, and immediately move on to the practical part. But then you will miss the opportunity to find out how the legendary writer Ernest Hemingway and the no less legendary cocktail are connected. But in this story lies the secret of the worldwide popularity of a seemingly simple mix.

Hemingway's Daiquiri

It’s worth making a reservation right away: Hemingway did not come up with the recipe for the Daiquiri cocktail. According to one version, the author of the mix was bartender Konstantin Rubalcaba Vert, who prepared the cocktail for the writer. He, in turn, loved the new product so much, which, in his opinion, embodied the true spirit of Cuba that he constantly mentioned it in his books. He also promoted the amazing taste properties of the cocktail everywhere, which greatly contributed to its popularization.

Interesting! There is an opinion that the writer himself nevertheless came up with his own cocktail, which is now known as “Papa Hemingway” or “Papa Double”.

But where did the name "Daiquiri" come from? This is told in another version, according to which one day a small bar ran out of gin, and a resourceful employee decided to replace it with rum, adding other ingredients to appease visitors who had lost their favorite alcohol. It was in the Cuban town of Daiquiri, which gave its name to the original cocktail.

There is also a third version, it is no less interesting. At the beginning of the 20th century, physician Lucius Johnson studied the diet of sailors, trying to find a cure for scurvy. He was amazed at how good the effect of the mixture of rum and lime juice used by the sailors was. The doctor thoroughly studied the issue and compiled a recipe for a wonderful drink, which he described in his treatise, from where it got into bars through not entirely clear means.

Sea buckthorn variety

This unusual, incredibly aromatic and beautiful drink will decorate any holiday table.

Compound:

  • Sea buckthorn jam – 15 g;
  • Sugar syrup – 10 g;
  • “Bacardi” white – 30 ml;
  • Lime juice – 20 ml;
  • Crushed ice - glass;
  • Rosemary – 3 g.

Cooking step by step:

  1. Mix all ingredients well in a blender;
  2. Pour the contents into a chilled glass and garnish the resulting masterpiece with a sprig of rosemary.

This alcohol has one positive quality: the components can be varied at will, and it is not necessary to strictly follow the recipes. Therefore, the above recipes are only a part of a huge list of varieties. The main thing is not to be afraid to experiment, and then you will be able to create your own unique version of the famous alcohol.

Non-alcoholic Daiquiri

Those who are supporters of a sober lifestyle can also please themselves with a cocktail. Any of the varieties can be made non-alcoholic. You can take this recipe as a basis, changing the necessary components in it.

Ingredients:

  • lime;
  • 100 gr. crushed ice;
  • 200 gr. fresh strawberries;
  • 1.5 teaspoons of sugar.

Preparation:

  1. Grind the strawberries in a blender.
  2. Add sugar to the strawberry mixture and squeeze out the citrus juice.
  3. Lay out the ice.
  4. Shake in a shaker for 30 seconds.
  5. Place in a glass with ice.

Cocktails help create a festive atmosphere, lift your spirits and energize you. Choose the appropriate recipe and delight your guests with an unusual drink, for which you do not need to have bartending skills at all - any type of Daiquiri can be easily and quickly prepared at home.

Strong representatives of the Pyrat brand are aged from fifteen to forty years or more.

Perhaps, starting with the most popular brands, you can create your top list of the best strong drinks for a party, relaxation in close company, or other pleasant occasions.

Lime juice

It's no secret that along with lemons, small citrus fruits with dark green peel, called limes, are also no less popular. They are used in many recipes for preparing national dishes from a large number of world cuisines.

These fruits can be used completely, that is, not only the juicy pulp is used, but also the zest, as well as lime juice, which gives a refreshing, sour taste to many dishes, while reviving them and making them more attractive and appetizing.

Quite often, lime juice is used to prepare alcoholic cocktails. The most common and very popular are low-alcohol drinks Mojito (it contains not only juice, but also slices of fresh lime), Margarita (based on silver tequila and Cointo liqueur), as well as Cosmopolitan, the main ingredients of which are vodka, Cointo liqueur and cranberry juice. It is clear that you cannot do without lime juice here.

Where is it used?

Lime and its juice are widely used in Mexican and Thai cuisines. It has a less bitter taste than lemons, but more flavor. Sprinkling some freshly squeezed lime juice on slices of pineapple, papaya or mango will intensify the flavor of those fruits.

This product is especially good in combination with salmon, as well as light aromatic Thai dishes.

Cane syrup

Sugar syrups

Syrup (sugar syrup) is produced as a by-product during the refining of sugar beets or sugar cane to produce white sugar. It is liquid sugar in which some of the sucrose has been converted into fructose and glucose. The combination of these different types of sugar prevents crystallization and guarantees a long shelf life.

Syrups are convenient to use during cooking if the sugar in the recipe is supposed to be heated, caramelized or liquefied. In such recipes, regular sugar is simply replaced with clear syrup (heating and liquefying the sugar) or one of the dark syrups (caramelization).

Cane syrup

Cane syrup is made from raw cane sugar. The syrup has a pronounced taste of cane molasses and caramel, and a golden color, which makes dishes more aromatic and attractive. The sweetness of the syrup balances the taste of the dish and improves its texture.

This syrup can be used as a ready-made syrup for pancakes, ice cream, porridges, and also as a substitute for honey if honey is required to be heated in recipes.

crushed ice

Description

Crushed ice is frozen water that has been specially crushed for the purpose of quickly cooling something. This ice is used not only in industry and cooking, but also for some cosmetic procedures.

There are several types of ice: dry, crushed, cubed. Each type has its own differences. So, ice cubes melt very slowly, they are suitable for making cocktails, and they are also mixed in a shaker with the rest of the ingredients. The most common is crushed ice, which is obtained using special tools.

Crushed ice is stored in a small bucket. It melts faster than in cubes, which means it cools the contents of the glass faster. Ice can be purchased in a store or ordered for home delivery. Ice for food purposes must be clean, free from impurities and odor.

Use in cooking

In cooking, crushed ice is often used to make cocktails. Using ice, you can prepare alcoholic, non-alcoholic and low-alcohol drinks.

Ice can be obtained by freezing not only ordinary water, but also juices.

Ice is also necessary to prepare the drink in a special cocktail glass. First, cool the glass and fill it to the top with crushed ice. The glass can be used when it is covered with frost, after which the ice is shaken out.

You can only use fresh ice; there is no point in defrosting and re-freezing it.

How to make at home

You can make crushed ice at home. Edible ice is small pieces of ice in the form of cubes. Simply put, ice is nothing more than water in a crystalline state. Ice is prepared from purified water using an ice maker.

At home, you can prepare it in the freezer by pouring water into a special form for making ice. This form is a plastic structure with small cells. Once the ice freezes, it will need to be removed. To do this, you need to bend the freezing container a little until all the pieces of ice fall out. Ice is placed in a bag.

Cooking features

The composition of the Daiquiri cocktail may be different, but the technology for their preparation is most often identical and not complicated. Knowing a few secrets will make the task of the home bartender even easier.

  • Most often, the ingredients for a cocktail need to be shaken in a shaker, but not every home has such a device. But in almost every kitchen you can find a jar. You can beat the ingredients in it, it is only important that it is tightly closed with a lid.
  • If you shake the drink directly with crushed ice, you should strain it through a fine sieve before filling the glasses.
  • Crushed ice can be made from regular ice by crushing cubes using a blender.
  • Lime juice in the cocktail can be replaced with lemon juice, slightly reducing its amount. This will affect the taste of the drink, but only slightly.
  • If frozen berries or fruits are used to prepare a cocktail, you do not need to add ice to it.

The Daiquiri cocktail is served in regular cone-shaped cocktail glasses, garnished with a slice of lime or other fruit or berry. They do not offer a straw with it, since this drink is supposed to be drunk without one, but in small sips.

The Daiquiri cocktail is served as an aperitif.

History of the cocktail

Version 1: In Cuba there is a small town called Daiquiri, one of whose bars accidentally ran out of gin at the beginning of the 20th century. The resourceful bartender shamelessly replaced it with rum, but in order not to disappoint visitors, he added sugar, lime juice and ice to it. The cocktail named after the Cuban town quickly became popular.

Version 2: During the war with Spain, Gening Cox, an American engineer, was in Cuba (1898), who accidentally ordered a “delicious mixture.” With the light hand of his friend Pagliucci, the inventor named the cocktail “Daiquiri”, in honor of his favorite area, located near Santiago. After the war, the popularity of this drink gained momentum. It began to be served at the Cuban Venus Hotel.

Cox's acquaintance with Lucius Johnson (1909) helped spread the cocktail. The latter studied the history of sailors and immediately became interested in one of the recipes. As a physician, he was struck by the composition for the prevention of scurvy among sailors. In the 18th century, rum and lime helped more than one sailor survive. The doctor described a detailed recipe in his treatise, choosing the ideal proportions of the ingredients. Members of the US Armed Forces appreciated the medicine, the recipe of which soon migrated to bars.

Version 3: The name of the Havana bar “Floridita” (“El Floridita La Habana”) became known throughout the world after bartender Constantin Rubalcaba Werth began preparing a special composition for Ernest Hemingway there. It was the most common sour, but it is known as the Daiquiri cocktail.

Fans: Ernest Hemingway (writer), John Kennedy (president) and many others.

Holidays: America celebrates National Daiquiri Day on July 19th every year.

Types and varieties: with and without alcohol in a huge assortment. A lot depends on the fillers here. There are, for example, banana daiquiri, strawberry daiquiri, etc. All of them are united by an invariable postscript in the name - the “Daiquiri” cocktail.

The main proportion of the drink is the ratio of rum, sugar and lime as 9:3:5.

Effect on the body: undoubtedly positive (if you drink in moderation). Vitamin C (from lime) is a powerful tool for the prevention of colds, improves immunity, protects the body from viruses and microorganisms. Moreover, this cocktail is considered an evening drink, that is, it is better to drink it before bed, which means that a small portion of alcohol will help relieve the stress of the day and fall asleep sweetly.

How to drink: from a martini glass in small sips or through a straw.

Price: different everywhere. Depends on the quality of the rum and the bar. Prepared in every bar.

Important:

  1. Rum should be light and of high quality. Bacardi, Havana Club, etc. will do.
  2. Add sugar to the cocktail without excess. This is especially true for cocktails with liqueurs, such as a banana daiquiri.
  3. The sugar syrup in the recipe can be replaced with ordinary sugar sand, which was provided for in the original version.
  4. It is permissible to replace lime juice with lemon juice, but if it is possible to purchase lime for a cocktail, then you should not change the ingredients.
  5. Ice can be added either to a shaker with all the ingredients, or separately to a glass. When using frozen berries (strawberry daiquiri), no ice is used.

The Daiquiri cocktail is a drink that both gentlemen and ladies will enjoy. It is considered the standard of taste, with ideal proportions of sour, bitter and sweet. However, it is not at all difficult to prepare at home.

Useful tips and tricks

A daiquiri cocktail, the classic recipe for which is described in the material, will turn out more aromatic and tasty if you adhere to the following recommendations during its creation:

  • Before preparing the drink, it is better to cool all components, as well as the shaker and glasses.
  • It is advisable to create a cocktail using ice cubes rather than crushed ice. After all, it is recommended to strain Daiquiri before serving so that it is as transparent as possible. But for those who like thicker cocktails, it is better to use crushed ice.
  • Instead of sugar, you can add syrup to the drink. Then the cocktail will mix faster and be more homogeneous.
  • To serve Daiquiri, it is advisable to use cocktail glasses up to 200 ml. It also looks impressive in martini glasses and champagne saucers.
  • You can decorate the drink only with pieces of fruit or mint sprigs. Any umbrellas or straws will only spoil its noble appearance. But this rule does not apply to thick cocktail options.

One of the options for decorating a Daiquiri cocktail is strawberries and lime zest.

Like any alcoholic drink, Daiquiri is a high-calorie product. You should not get carried away with alcoholic treats, otherwise it will lead not only to deterioration of health, but also to excess weight gain.

Alcoholic Daiquiri, prepared either according to the classic recipe or in any version, will be the best drink for any party. It will take a minimum of time to create, and the process itself does not require special skills. At the same time, the cocktail turns out to be tender, aromatic, and there is practically no alcohol in it.

History of appearance

Cuba is considered the birthplace of the daiquiri cocktail - it was there that this drink was first prepared in 1905, which at that time was a mixture of rum and lime juice with added sugar. According to legend, this combination was used by local mining engineer Jennings Cox, who was supposed to meet a delegation of high-ranking management, but could not offer his guests anything other than rum.

Since rum in those days was not considered a noble enough drink to be offered to high officials, Jennings decides to mix rum with lime juice and pass the drink off as a cocktail for aristocrats.

Oddly enough, such a cocktail begins to gain popularity and within five years reaches the United States, where it is consumed mainly by army officers.

In 1920, writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald mentioned the daiquiri in one of his books, and the cocktail became known to the general public.

The cocktail is quickly becoming popular among American politicians and celebrities, but it was especially loved by the writer Ernest Hemingway.

Interestingly, it was not an alcoholic’s love for alcohol - Hemingway not only liked the cocktail, but also aroused genuine interest from the point of view of the possibility of improving it.
